DESIGN DESCRIPTION

The goal of the project is to create an industrialized piece of furniture without using any existing electrical tool. Every tool needed has to be designed in order to reproduce the same object several times in an identical way.I crafted Enfants Terribles, a completely hand-made swing chair for children made of a layer of natural leather and one of cotton fabric. This machine is so playful and safe that even an [ enfant terrible ] can craft his own chair.

The rounded templates are precisely cut by using the first turning tool on the specific table.

Two pieces are fixed together thanks to the second rotating tool, which spreads Neoprene glue onto the textile. Then,

some drops of coloured ink randomly fall on the fabric side with the use of a type of pendulum. As a result, the interior becomes

dirty and messy with colour - as if an [ enfant terrible ] did it. This side is also decorated with a brand rubber stamp.

Chairs & Armchairs02 H CHAIR

Page 30: Portfolio Design 2015

DESIGN DESCRIPTION

Focusing on a simple design that uses no more than 3 main materials and simple batch production processes, the idea of this project was to carefully design a seat for a specific user profile and come up with a 1:3 scale model.h chair aims to be a long-lasting armchair, that is the reason behind its timeless design. The inspiration came from the folds in women’s clothes or from the waves in the sea. h chair’s main characteristic is its ability to store objects - books, remote controls, etc. - in its side pockets. This armchair is made up of a steel structure and a soft felt seat; this last part is also covered with a leather pad which can be potentially removed by the user.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION

The focus of this project was to test and use a new material in furniture design as well as come up with a range of design proposals in only one weeks time.O° my lamps is a range of table lamps composed of three lighting designs: a desk lamp - Slather - and two spot lamps - Savour and Nibble. Concrete, wood and a touch of fluorescent colour along with leather details make for the undeniable harmony of these designs. Concrete is solid, factual and substantial. It is a versatile material, inexpensive to mold and interesting to manipulate.

The industrial look in interior design has been around for a while now and one of the easiest ways to achieve this appearance at home is to use industrial materials. Concrete was an obvious choice. Many designers are now using concrete in unexpected and unusual ways and it seems that almost everything can be made with this versatile material, even lighting.I decided to combine dark concrete with wood and leather in order to come up with a range of lamps, O° my lamps. In only one-week time, I experimented the use of these materials with the aim of designing simple and effective products which can be immediately commercialized.

Slather is a handy desk lamp composed of three independent parts, making it possible to reduce packaging.

The lamp can be assembled without using any nails or tools by simply fixing the wooden plank on the concrete base. Then,

the board with the light bulb is placed on the plank and the height of the light is defined according to people’s needs.

Slather works with E27 light bulbs.

Product and Industrial Designers are frequently called upon to come up with new concepts and systems of which consumers and users will have had no or little previous experience. During my studies, I was encouraged to consider the impact of emergent technologies, global marketing, consumer attitudes, environmental issues, cultural shifts and many other factors in order to design future scenarios. I was also encouraged to embrace change and to challenge accepted cultural and commercial norms, aided by wide ranging research methodologies, practice and independent learning. Moreover, my studies led me to assume an holistic approach allowing to perceive the discipline of design as process-lead rather than object driven. Designers should also be emphatic in the view that people should be at the centre of the design process: engaging in ongoing exploration and development of insight methods that reveal people’s desires and needs – especially those they would normally find difficult to express. Design is about people.

While doing shopping, we often buy more then what we really need.

This is the consequence of the fact that brands sell products in imposed sizes with standard packaging.

BlackStrip ’s main purpose is to push consumers to buy reasonable quantities in relation to their needs

and reduce packaging thanks to ready-to-use containers which can be refilled when empty.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION

The Laboratoire by Dior is the brand-new line of product packagings for Beauty Being Care designed for the french brand Christian Dior. The focus of this project is on mascara cake - the solid form of the cosmetic. The stakeholder - LVMH Group - asked me to design a new usage which could increase the interest of the customers on it. In fact, customers have commonly a propensity for creamy mascaras because of their handiness in everyday life.

As product designer, I decided to bring the concept of the Mascara into a new univers that I designed for it.

I analyzed the Make-up notion itself in order to come up with brand-new ideas.

Finally, the concept of the Laboratory of the Being Care was designed with the purpose to match the ideas of beauty and care.

Make-up is not a mask that users put on with an aesthetic goa; it is something that brings delight and confidence to its user.

I decided to tell a story about it - the raw material is like a rock magically coming out from a foggy environment.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION

Goutte-à-Goutte is an improved drainer which recycles water drained from recently washed silverware. This concept focuses on hand dish-washing cycle. My design goal was to raise user awareness about the importance of water recycling - even in small quantity.Through the hole on the bottom of Goutte-à-Goutte, drops of water are recovered in order to water an aromatic plant which has been previously placed below. Legs can be removed to hang Goutte-à-Goutte on ordinary metallic kitchen frames.

Before focusing on shape and details, I decided to test the design concept in an everyday life context in order to verify the real efficiency of this system of water recycling. I was able to prove that this quantity of water [10cl a day for two people], which seems so imperceptible to us, can assure the life of an aromatic plant.

The map in this page resumes all the stages of the use of Goutte-à-Goutte. Contrary to the existing draining boards, this new cycle of glasses and cutlery drying takes into account the water recycling. It also defines new gestures which can be assumed by the user as a game: the more regularly and conscientiously he does the dishes, the more the well-being of its plant is assured. No more water waste.

Design for Interaction focuses on the way in which users and products interact. How do people experience and use a product? What is their understanding of that product? What is the feeling with it? It is a multi-disciplinary study covering topics which include ergonomics, aesthetics, interaction design, psychology and sociology. Testing and refinement of functional prototypes through user tests also figure prominently in this design approach. During my six-month exchange programme at TU Delft, The Netherlands, I had the possibility to learn the main concepts of this discipline of design in order to integrate it to my product-oriented education. I learnt how to involve users in analysing needs with the aim of gaining knowledge of what people do with products and expect from the products they use in everyday life.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION

Little Learning Lab. is a mobile application for primary school students (7-12) which is able to bring out their personality while performing educational activities and share this information with friends and parents. The concept is based on a physical support, EL, which is able to interact with a smartphone through specific edge sensors in order to accomplish the tasks. By connecting EL to the mobile application, students can select different activities and build up the avatar which is a portrait of their personality. The avatar itself is made up of coloured triangles; each triangle refers to an activity and a side of the personality.

Little Learning Lab. ’s main concept is the ability to match virtuality with a real tool, EL. First of all, it is a way to bring the student out the virtual screen of the phone which is used to get to the contents.

Secondly, it is a simple way to keep connection with what the student has previously learnt. Every child will have his/her own EL as a personal and unique tool.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION

People have lost their natural ability to play with simple things. Everyday, we spend our entire lives in front of screens - computers, televisions, tablets and phones. People do not want to play with real objects anymore and the relationship between end-users and products is moving more and more into a dematerialized world.Spot is a range of simple games designed to digital detox and re-establish a relationship between humans and things. The concept is based on the epidemic diffusion and free exchange through end-users. One can play and share through Spot to finally find out the value of physical interactions in everyday life.

In this part of the portfolio, I want to share some descriptive research that I gathered during my studies. Research in design is a necessary step before developping ideas or chosing materials. In fact, it is a source of information and inspiration for any projects. I could attend three different kinds of research, which are summarize in this chapter: colorimetry, trends and materials. All of them are important in the field of design. Trends & Materials was my task during my interniship at Outsign. Through an extensive research, from inspiration images to technical elements, I gained a strong knowledge which is always useful in every new design, in terms of aesthetics and industrial materials.

Grey is an intermediate color between black and white.

It is a neutral or achromatic color, meaning literally that it is a color “without color.” We say that those who are suffering from

the mental illness of depression have grey auras; grey as boredom, solitude and emptiness.

At the same time, this colour is often associated to elegance and intellectual - the grey matter of the brain.

This research is a visual voyage in all the palette - from black to white - giving the reader a moment of chromatic reflection.

T r e n d s

During a period of six months I did an internship in the Trend & Materials department of Outsign, a Paris-based design agency.

This experience allowed me to express my outlook though the creation of brainbooks and trendbooks.

I did some research in benchmarking and in sourcing as well.

I learnt how to synthetize creative proposals through moodboards and find reference pictures.

I was able to strengthen my knowledge of different materials used in the field of design.

Welcome to Coffee Street. The idea is very simple: sell coffee on city center street by using a delivery tricycle or a small van.

The purpose of this research in materials is to find a supports which can be used to draw the Coffee Street Maker of tomorrow -

between tradition and innovation - in terms of service and materials for his dress-code.

Comfort, safety, hygene and - why not - style have to be taken into account.

Prospection[ 1 ] Wujiang Qingyou Fiber (Chine): the patterns of this fabric fade when it comes in contact with a source of heat.[ 2 ] Outlast fabric: a T-shirt which warms when it is cold and cools when it is warm: here is the exploit promised by this fabric.[ 3 ] NanoSphere fabric by Schoeller Technologies: it prevents the absorption of liquids and dirtiness thanks to its superficial microstructure.[ 4 ] Rhodia Emana is an anti-fatigue fiber in polyamide containing a special additive which gives it properties of thermoregulation and activation of blood microcirculation.

In this final part, skills and experiences are collected. First of all, I decided to devote some pages to my CAD skills - Solidworks and Rhinoceros - which are not voluntary presented along the portfolio. In fact, I decided to give more importance to my attitude to work with materials in order to come up with functional or scaled models. Nevertheless, Computer Aided Design has always been a part of my projects as a way to express my ideas before moving to the workshop. It is also a useful way to show more accurate outcomes after sketching.
