Jeroen Meyboschproduct developer2014 portfolio

Hello,I am Jeroen Meybosch and I am currently looking for an internship. I would love to join your firm this summer for some real experience!
My philosophy is to keep things simple in every design. That means making choices between integrations and modularity’s after the user’s needs. Using a broad spectrum of skills and interests I ought to get the best result out of the least complex solutions.

Bpost mail storage Box 2013
The problemBpost, one of the major Belgian mail companies was in need of an update of their mail delivery system. Currently mailbags are placed unprotected in public spaces because mailmen can’t carry all mail at once. By creating refill points along the way they manage to get all mail to its destination. Some kind of storage box (refill box) was to be designed to protect these mailbags in public spaces.
Design problems
AnalysisWith camera and pen in hand a field research tried to give this design challenge a suited context. Given that this storage box would be out in public spaces, I analysed similar public objects. This gave me an idea of current solutions for problems I would be facing later in the process. Also existing mailboxes were analysed. These mailboxes were often outdated and in need of an update. Therefor I chose for my concept to be modular and combine a refill box and a mailbox. With a scheme of design problems subtracted from the analysis I moved on to the next step.

Design driversIn order to give my design some direction and a distinct face I came up with a handful of design drivers. As there are multiple combinations of refill boxes and a mailbox, the concept needed to be modular.Furthermore my design would become simple and straight forward in order to simplify production, maintenance and usage.Lastly the information which is currently provided through add-on stickers and a non-uniform design will be redesigned.
System designAfter defining all the requirements it was time to start designing. Using pencil and paper I put down my ideas. In order to get to a final concept the design drivers were used to select the best solution for every problem.

Final conceptThe final concept is built around three primary modules. A base module, an in between module and a top module made out of sheet metal.
In order to keep the design simple and easy to configure only 3 different kinds of connection methods are used. To connect the base module with the foundation screws are used. The different modules are connected by blind rivet nuts (1) and screws. Stud welds (2) provide connection points for other elements to be fastened to the modules. To build the modules themselves spot welds (3) are used to join sheet metal slabs.

User testUser tests with a mock-up model assured the design was ergonomic and showed the user interaction with the new product.
Mailbags* are stored in refill box.
Mailman uses drawer and manipulates mail in mailbag*.
Mailman withdraws a mailbag*.
*in this user test a box instead of a bag was used.

ModularityIn order to get a high level of modularity two different sub modules were designed to configure the box. First there is a refill sub module which is a drawer and is made out of a simple piece of sheet metal. Next there is a mail sub module which converts the box into a mailbox. Both drawer and mail sub module can be used together or separately as shown in the section view.

guitar-trolley hyBrid 2012-2013
During my exchange program in Germany I joined a project to design a trolley. Due to the universities values this assignment needed to be experimental rather than realistic and was focussed on prototyping. During this project I put my German to use and improved it drastically. With this in mind my trolley became a combination of a trolley, a guitar, a stool and a bag. After some research and an ideation process I started out with small cardboard models to experiment with form and functions. Followed by a big cardboard model which was made at the actual scale to preform user tests.

Lastly a wooden model was made to verify mechanical aspects of the design. Due to the limitations of the workshop the design was altered and fillets were left out.

alarm clock 2012-2013
An alarm clock usually has a snooze button which is probably the most abused button in history. Therefor we came up with an alarm clock which makes sure you get up, by forcing you to think and to move first thing in the morning.
For this project we focussed on creating a working prototype by programming our idea with Arduino. Due to the high number of LED’s this was a challenging task to wire up everything and find the right program to get the job done.
The alarm clock exists out of two modules, the first one displays the time through 16 RGB LED’s and is placed next to bed. The second one exists out of 16 corresponding buttons and is placed elsewhere in the room. When the alarm sounds in the morning a random pattern of colors is shown on the 4 by 4 matrix. You must remember the exact place of the LED’s with the same color as the one on top of the clock. Afterwards you must get up and press the corresponding buttons in order to kill the alarm.

post retirement service 2013-2014
One of the major shifts in life is retiring. In order to make life after work easier we created GOUD. This service connects retired peolpe (the wise) with people in need of knowledge (the wisdom seekers). To support this service a small product was created which had multiple uses. As it exists out of a small projector and camera it can be used as a touchscreen on any surface. This way it is used to set up a profile and to find the right match for your problem in an interactive and innovative way. Furthermore it is also used to communicate and store documents and to cooperate when both users are together.

Brand identity workshopweek 2014
For our annual workshopweek organized by our university the media team of our student association created a brand identity. All workshops are determined by a theme which turned out to be games and gaming. After a brainstorm we came up with the slogan LET’S PLAY and the iconic logo; a small water gun. Next we redesigned all displayed information on campus.
Every evening our student association organized an event for which we also created graphic work such as posters and banners.
