In todays world of international coöperation, globalisation and mass tourism - borders seem to slowly fade away. When one is new in a strange country or city, they should be welcomed - not only by the people, but also the buildings.

Why have borders at all? The inside does not have to be physically seperated from the outside. One should feal at ease when approaching a building, or even not notice entering the building at all.

The modern city has become a playground where all is possible. Having diner, shopping, attending markets, dancing, dating, joining clubs, meeting new people and much more.

The project location is the ideal starting point to explore the city, situated in the center of Rotterdams many activities. This is another reason to design something that ensures a natural flow between the city and the location.

Students are the future for any community. Their combined efforts and mindpower are vital to reinvent and solve the issues in society and bring humanity forward.

But before they can develop society, they need to develope themselves first. Through providing proper facilities, a student can reach its true popential (and deadlines).

When all the different layers of interest and activity of the Laurenskwartier, the historical hearth of Rotterdam, are layed upon one another, a triangle shows: the points in these triangles mark the most vibrant places of the city. Remarkable is the lack of activity in the East of the Laurenskwartier. This symptom seems to extend towards the project location of the Westewagenstraat, which is at the center between the vocal points, but in itself a very uneventful lot.This can be considered as an 'Eye of the storm'-symptom: the storm is most quiet in the very core of it.

Also remarkable is the lack of green and accommodations in the nearby surroundings. There seems to be little justification as to why these things have been ommitted in this area, because a lot of the most important attractions of Rotterdam are in the Laurenskwartier. The plans to accommodate students however is spot on, because there are a lot of academic institutions in the nearby area.

In conclusion: The project location is situated in the eye of the storm in the citycenter of Rotterdam. Yet there are a lot of missing links to be put in their rightfull place: a place to stay for students (and young tourists) and a fair share of green.

Visitors of the hotel can use the library to inform themselves about Rotterdam, or just study.

This outdoors deck has an ideal orientation to the sun. On a sunny day, throughout the afternoon there is plenty of sunlight to bath in. You can also just take some fresh air while studying in the library.

Just a few steps away, there is your very own self-service laundry.

This deck over the Delftsevaart offers a nice view to the Laurenskerk and is an ideal setting for enjoying a snack.

Students and young people have many ambitions. If you happen to have musical ambitions as well, there is a studio nearby to practise your latest compositions.

Don't want to cook yourself today? Just want something to eat? Earn some money on the side?This kitchen, by students for students, will serve breakfast, lunch and diners!

The reception is just a few more steps away from the street entrance and located along the public courtyard.

Rainy day and nothing to do outside? Go relax in the indoors hall and see if anyone else is around.

All work has been done, but all that is left is printing everything. No need to get your feet wet. Luckily, there is an all-inclusive printshop below your feet.

THE HOTEL

TRANSFORMATIONPRIVATE VILLA IN OEKELSBOS

BEING TOGETHERDuring diners and enjoying nature, the family has the opportunity to be amongst each other. The terrace and kitchen are important facets in the villa for this purpose.

REST & WITHDRAWALWhen it comes to working, sleeping and/or taking time for yourself, it is important to be in an environment that is pri-vate and can provide an atmosphere of withdrawal. The living room, the terrace and the atelier offer the requirements for this need: Here one can be on his/her own or catch some breath.omen.

CHANGING FAMILYIt is unknown what the future has got in store. The family structure is no exception to this: Who will stay in this villa? This question and its implications bear consequentes to the way the villa will be used. The bedrooms can change in guestrooms, the terrace can change its configuration and the living room might has to alter its role in the configuration of the house.

HOBBIESRetirement is approaching and more time comes avail-able for practising hobbies and passions, which was previously mainly occupied by carreer and taking care of the family. A spacious atelier and personal garden embody the future possibilities for new forms of pastime..

RAADSHUISRECONSTRUCTION OF FORMER TOWNHALL OF ROTTERDAM

Personal project, autumn 2014 - ongoing

LOST GEMBecause of the bombing of Rotterdam in WO II, a lot of important historical buildings where damaged beyond repair or even completely destroyed. The ‘Raadshuis’ on the Kaasmarkt is only one example of lost gems of pre-WO II Rotterdam.

All that is left of this townhall, is some old pictures. There have been little efforts to reconstruct an accurate image of how the townhall used to look like. This circumstance was an occassion to make a model of the townhall, that was as accurately as possible, with all information that was available - including renovation drawings and classicistic design guidelines.

CENTER FOR ARTS & CULTUREThe city of Rotterdam has launched a new project to help implement the ambitions of minister Jet Bussemaker (Education, culture and science). The aim is to have students in the Netherlands aquire a creative and critical mentality with the help of the ‘Cultuurkaart’ (Culture pass), which will be secured for another 10 years.

In the context of the aformentioned plans, a consortium was composed con-sisting of 8 museums and 1 possible contributor:Boijmans, ‘Kunsthal’ (Hall of Art), Maritime Museum, Fotomuseum, Historic Museum (of Rotterdam), NAI, Artcenter Witte de With, Codarts (popmusic and arts) and (If necessary): Rotterdam World Port World City.The consortium is to manage a center that will fullfill the wishes of minister Jet Bussemaker and is aimed at a target group of students between the ages of 13 and 23. This center comes with a location, budget and specific require-ments from the city of Rotterdam.

CENTER FOR ARTS & CULTURE FOR KIDS & STUDENTS

REQUIREMENTS- Total ground surface ≤ 1000m2- Total volume ≤ 5000m3- The center shall contain not more than 3 stories- Planned time of service of center: ap-proximately 10 years

BUDGETThe construction of the center must be executed in a way, that it can be shut down within10 years. This implies that the building can stand for longer than 10 years, but is essentially a “budget-build-ing” - otherwise the time of service would be too long.”

LOCATIONThe center is to be build at the Müllerhoofd (see below): The Müllerhoofd is the tip of the Müllerpier, which is a pier along the Nieuwe Maas. To the north there is a family neighborhood, to the south there is a royal view on the Nieuwe Maas. In the area there a lot of schools and theatres where the target group assembles.

Aside from the technical requirements given by the city of Rotterdam, there was a need to analyse the participants of the consortium. After all, they will execute the programme that will eventually take place in the center. The analysis concluded into a paradigm of ‘discover, do and display’.It was the visions of the organisations that must gave insight in how the center programme should take place.

The target group needed to be profiled and mapped. There seemed to be a strong match between discover, do and display and the acitvities of the target group. When studying different configurations on the 3 themes, it seemed impractical to give them physical partition. Instead, the design should be more integral.

Applying paradigm to the location: playing with thoughts

LOCATION

Considering new locationsAfter analysing the location and its environment, the intersection between the Piet-er the Hoochweg and Westzeedijk seemed to have much better qualities to place the center in comparison to the original location at the Müllerhoofd.

It was however non-negotiable to divert from the original location, so there was going to be a big challenge to conceive a smart workaround to get the target group to go all the way to end of the Müllerpier to engage in activiteits concerning arts & culture.

Back at the drawing board, a simple map was made of the Müllerhoofd with its main associative qualities. On each side of the pier there were different qualities, like: Focus, visibility and relaxation
