Architecture Design Works
1The site is a small waste dump in Xiaobao Village in Songzhuang. We implant public service functions in landscape design such as pavilions, cafes, book bars aiming to improve the quality of the public space in Xiaobao Village. We have two basic targets: one is to provide the artists and villagers with better living environment and the other is to attract tourists to activate the area.
In the process of site researching we were most impressed by the terrible situation of the site. Considering Songzhuang as a sign for the modern art of China this situation is hardly bearable. In these days more and more artists choose to stay in Songzhuang after the Artist’s Village in Yuanming Garden dismissed. Therefore, public space of high quality is urgently demanded here.
The first step of our design is to make a plan for junk treatment on the basis of a lot of research. The second step is to implant building facilities on the site.
The design principle is to divide the site and distribute functions according to different groups of people. We put pavilions on the east of site to attract tourists, green space and playgrounds on the west to provide recreation for artists who live in nearby residential areas. In the center of the site we make a circular square that could play the role of a temporary theater. Audience could sit on the grass slope. This complete and centripetal space defined by elevations and surfaces around is expected to be the soul of the design.
Design Description
Gabage Dump RegenerationPartners: Zhao Xinyu, Cai AnpingInstructor: Zhu Yufan
Legend: There is an old cypress tree which was filled by a mulberry tree in the Confucian temple in Beijing. It was told that this cypress tree was planted in Yuan Dynasty . However ,the tree died and the trunk got hollow years later yet giving birth to a new mulberry tree from inside due to a mulberry which was cast into the hollow by a bird which came by. Branches of mulberry tree came from the trunk of cypress tree, vanishing with great respect; at the same time the old cypress tree avoided getting rooted out for degenerating, thus obtaining a brand-new life. Inspiration: Vanishing is not just about disappearing or losing, or getting away from the progress of city construction. It is based on the respect for the original cultrue and the cooperation with the existing world. We get our inspiration from ‘the mulberry tree in cypress tree’,casting new space into the original dead space, in order to create vigour and energy. Arena: In the past, temples were the carrier of religional cultrue and also provided space for social activities, such as kermis and school. Temples reflect the local culture and folk custom. There were a great number of temples in the old peking. They were widely scattered and worked as significant link of hu-tong life. Such phenomenon relects the fact to some degree that there existed great need for public space in hu-tong area. With the change of folk custom, temples in Beijing are no longer as buslting with excitement as they were before. After all these years of transition, temples got either diverted to frills ending in worrying state, or protected hypocritically with little energy left. If we can make the most of these old public space, then the hu-tongs will get much more vigour. For example, the original courtyard can generate new space in vanishing frame of reference from the perspect of theme or form. Function: “Stage” will be the central function, together with exhibition space, recreational space, entertainment space, service space, and so on, in order to promote the quality of hu-tong life. Result: With the preconditon of protecting existing emotional memories and original situational atmosphere, the grey hu-tong area in old Peking was injected with vibrant colours.

Ancient buildings
The ancient temple buildings work well with the neighborhood environment. This provides possibilities for its interior space to do something unique.
Ups and downs
The waves going up and down gives an atmosphere of lively and freedom to the temple that is solemn and sober.
Ground Cover
The idea of ground cover design is to emphasis the mid axis and its turns.
Connections
The connection part expresses the relationship between new elements and the traditional.
Space
Newly constructed space is mainly underground. Its functions and distributions have clear relations with the ancient buildings on the ground.

The vegetables in the area make a very comfortable environment. For 1 2 3 5 type alleyways bottle gourd could be planted. For 4 6 7 8 9 10 type alleyways nothing should happen in their above space.
For 2 and 3 type alleyways sofas and chairs could be set near the gate door. The old might sit and drink tea here. They are the natural spies of the street and they ensure the safty in the area.
1 ALLEYWAYS OVERHEAD SPACE
2 STRAIGHT ALLEYWAYS
2-1 Clearance For 1 and 5 type alleyways the garbage is to be cleared
2-2 Flowers For 4 and 6 type alleyways flower chairs can be put on one side or both sides of the alleyways.
2-3 Parking For 9 type alleyways the facades should be well treated considering the relationship between cars and gates.
\
2-4 Roofs For 10 type alleyways roofs are set outside the shops to provide shelter.
3 CROSSINGS
3-1 Crossings
Crossings are common in the alleyways. Five principle for them are applied as follows: green, barrier-free, flow-directing, commercial and car flow avoiding when most residences are nearby.
3-2 T-shapedcrossings
Four principles are made to apply for T-shaped crossings: green, barrier-free, gate entry emphasis and landscape design.
4 CORNERS
Two principles are made to apply for corners: clear & clean and enough rest space.
5-1 Characteristic Facade Element
The street signs of Huguosi are as follows: shop banners, air conditioners, shelves.
5-2 Doors and Windows
5-2-1 Commerce There are three types of the shops in the Huguosi street as right: They are all wooden but have various colours. One of the design principles is to keep the doors and windows unchanged and newly open shop need to choose one of these three for their doors. The windows have similar shapes with the doors. They have a scale of 4:3 to 3:2 (length:width).
5-2-2 Residence There are several types of the households in the Huguosi street as right: they are red wooden doors with single or double door slabs and could rotate either inside or outside. On the doors there are sculptural or building decrations.
5-2-3 Public space The current public space has an obvious preference for the ancient building style but lack of creation. In this area the other principle for door and window design is to design freely as this area is quite small.

About the designThe whole design layout revolves around two centers. One is the patients and their accompanying family members, for a small area of the building, space and a transfusion room together, waiting in line with the villagers’ behavior patterns, and the approximate atmosphere can also be convenient for the villagers. For physicians, usually he as the only doctor here, need to monitor the situation of the patients, which saw the transfusion room, so the doctor’s office for the weaker partition. In such a mode, the villagers and physician can maintain that mainly neighborhood, and the secondary is the state of the doctor-patient relationship, so they can watch TV in the large space to talk.
As a new village construction, it is necessary to bear the liability for some public buildings. Firstly, large space can accommodate about 20 people, for some activities. Secondly, the construction of the toilet in the rural life is more special, so the construction of some grey space can accommodate this activity, and make the villagers to stop to sit, then breed further exchanges.

Center of Hui People Many people go to church here. Places around the Rue du Boeuf are the source of vitality co-prosperity
1949 years later, the rue du boeuf become the symbol of the people's government of the national policy, many national leaders made a special visit, come and visit here.In 1997, the rue du boeuf renovated one phase of the horse, 2000 rue du boeuf renovated phase ii to horse, "wei" in the region near the rue du boeuf and mostly removed, hutong texture was completely destroyed. The rue du boeuf renovated area covers an area of 29.4 hectares, involving residents 7500 households, 26000 people, divided into three phases.New rue du boeuf avenue opened to traffic in 2003, the new rue du boeuf street is 670 metres long and 40 meters wide, two on two of the four lanes, in front of the broad street, as a cultural relics preservation niujie Muslim temple is like a potted landscape is generally small.
Plan of Grassland 1:500
History:Rue du boeuf is Beijing's largest hui nationality settlements, about in the song and yuan times, many Muslim from central Asia in this settlement gradually, after nearly one thousand years of development. In the center of the region "rue du boeuf" as the central axis, contains about 60 winding on both sides of the lane to hutong, settlement.(as the Beijing old city reconstruction, north from the rue du boeuf a at the rue du boeuf six large tracts of hutong neighborhoods
have been razed.)Streets to cattle, sheep, meat, noodles, sugar and other food named: main street "hutong" beef, this input hutong has "hutong" beef, this rue du boeuf four old name "mutton hutong";And "shiyang hutong", "cracker dough hutong" and "sugar fang hutong".
Current Situation:Muslims living in the rue du boeuf think rue du boeuf is the home of the muslims. Rue du boeuf daily traffic was at least more than in 30000, more than 90% of people buy halal food: treasure source, hung down every day in the queue, input hutong, godchild hutong is very crowded. There are beef and mutton, full of old Beij ing characteristics. Most of the hui nationality don't often go to church,
mainly on Friday.Aging is serious. As a result of the limitation of building shape, community communication there are problematic.
Plan of Park 1:500
1.Mattress:This is a mattress, it landed in a forest. The afternoon sunlight will through the trees down, you can have a nice nap lying in it, also can read and three friends sit on it.Fight the landlord and The Three Kingdoms, of course, also OK.
2.Swing:Ripples in the woods, listening to the feeling of the wind noise for a long time have passed.
3.Coffee Table:This is a fall in the glass of the forest cafe, as long as the heart experience, and bamboo house of small teahouse out
4.Box:This is a big box of many small boxex. People are willing to drinking tea and chatting in the grey space.
The rue du boeuf is an ageing community. The park to see the most is the old man LiuDiao, playing CARDS, chatting, and older community residents. They have been already very familiar with each other. The park life is an important part of their social life.
Due to this kind of psychological needs, community residents and the old man presents the gathered group, such as circular stool sitting under the shade of trees. Source temple before the small little place two rows of trees in the square, each tree sits stool are attracted and elderly residents with a variety of activities, overflowing with sweaters, and so on.Ballroom dancing is the old man into the company.
The old way of aggregation optimization can consider introducing new species, and create more likely to make room for the old men.

Rue du boeuf, as one of the most famous Muslim snack street in Beijing, attracted a large number of customers. According to the rue du boeuf a snack street shopkeeper rue du boeuf daily attendance at least in the more than 30000, more than 90% of people who buy halal food.
In the rue du boeuf saw the most amazing thing is, no matter how several snack bar, are all the same in the queue.More interestingly, it is said that some intend to operate in the rue du boeuf national costume or religious books stores are closed, but to run snacks and immediately began to fire. This enough to justify the importance of diet on the rue du boeuf area.
Young people is the key to the injected fresh strength to the rue du boeuf. In the rue du boeuf meet young people on the streets of the park is not much, only seen in halal restaurants in the supermarket.
Customers and Young Men
Bazaar is a traditional Muslim bazaar, selling all kinds of things.Bazaar is located in the ground, we will design four pieces sinking space to the ground and underground part of the integration,
the function of which is also different. Bazaar is mainly for Muslim snacks shops, and also give full play to the rue du boeuf diet resources characteristics. Moreover most complete bazaar as the largest market, and sell products with national characteristics and costumes.Four pieces of sinking space in bazaar has different properties. Northwest block is a vegetable market, the northeast block is for snack food, and the southwest is Muslim supplies.
From the ground into the underground bazaar can pass air nest corner tower, also can be directly by layer from the ground into the underground stairs or ramps, and can be scattered
from the lawn spirals into glass boxes.
Plan of the Square 1:500
Plan of the Garden 1:500
I.Rue du boeuf region is for the hui people, most people belief of Islam.Through interview and investigation, we know that in the crowd, the elderly, the elderly over the age of 60 random interviews in our object occupies more than 50%.
II.In the interview, the majority of hui people think rue du boeuf region has certain characteristics, whereas most of hui people don't think rue du boeuf characteristic, besides a mosque, other area and no distinct difference with Beijing.
III.Rue du boeuf region of the hui nationality most love characteristics of national culture and have a certain understanding, but in the interview we learn that even the children for hui, now rarely take the initiative to contact and learn the culture of the hui nationality.Instead of hui people tend not to understand for hui nationality culture, most people also said they were not interested in the culture.National cultural industries in the rue du boeuf are not prosperity.
IV.In the interview, we also research the rue du boeuf region by means of questions and choose the various needs of the crowd.Majority of community residents choose the park and green space showed greater demand, individual residents also put forward for parking needs. They said need some spread and emphasized the Muslim family and islamic culture, such as Muslim square and cultural center, etc.For these needs, we think it is necessary to reflect the traditions and characteristics of rue du boeuf to recall the hui nationality culture.

One Day:Old Men:I like to go to small forest, for the air is very cool. There are a lot of fun reading tea or even take a nap, and swing, and many young people go there to play. Uighur girl:The islamic cultural center here is really a surprise, and it is hard to find a place so full collection. And the clothes and jewelry in the grand bazaar is very good, and I will give my good friend bought a beautiful necklace.Young Men:The rue du boeuf garden is a magical place. I like sitting near the long table or lying on the grass so that the small forest is our happy place.
One Week:On Monday, wait for the bus at the station, or drive a private car to go out to work. We will be passing through the center of the beautiful garden. We don't have enough time to go to garden for busy work. But we can buy food to the underground, and see sinking space and elegant tower. We will go to church on friday. Many foreign people get here, and they will go to the bazaar and the garden. The weekend is the party time when people are not less than on Friday.
One Month:After the Ramadan, great eid al-fitr will be coming. On the day of eid al-fitr, rue du boeuf broad street becomes a pedestrian street. The street is filled with selling halal food.
One Year:Big lawn is likely to add more devices, and small forest may also add a few boxes. But anyway, all the changes will make the garden to get balance between the religious and secular.
Hui people is the masters of rue du boeuf.Rue du boeuf's greatest resource is a gourmet,
and the second is the hui people. The hui nationality is no longer pious to do Friday
work, but they still are quite proud of myself as muslims .
In the research, the small square in front of the mosque is of great value. These people are familiar with each other.
Here are four creative design concepts. Starting from small details in everyday life and taking people's emotions into consideration, I come up with positive and interesting solutions to solve problems and bring surprise and happiness to people's life.
