public building

Because of strong changes in policy of education and a development towards both working parents in modern western nations new programmatic questions raise: How should education space look like to fit in new learning concepts? How can a school offer living and welcoming qualities to stay at it the whole day? This is why the design tries, to combine the use of education and living in only one building. It desires to achieve the offer of synergy effects.

boarding school

Bad Cannstatt, GER

public building boarding school Bad Cannstatt, GER

The school with an integrated boar-ding school consists of three cluster buildings. Each of them has two learning zones and one sleeping zone on every floor.

A common living and welcoming area is used as link and can be connected or disconnected to the uses depending on the time of the day. In this case the flexible space enables the reduction of the area without losing qualities.

The multiple use of the intermediate area highlights the style of the buil-ding as living space and strengthens the identification of the pupil with their school.

infrastructure

The urban network of the site enables a main ac-cess to the building from the west. Bus stations for the school and scheduled traffic are also located close to the front doors. In a distance of 500 meters a subway and train station “Nürnberger Straße” is already established. The continuation of the “Remstalstraße” through the traffic-calmed “Rommelshauser Straße” offers a good connection via car. The very quiet situation on the roads is perfect for pedestrians and pupil by bike.

public spaces

The arrangement of the clusters offer spaces of individual intimacy with paved and green surfaces for all ages. Links in between offer the opportunity to get in touch with everyone in need. The “Aktivpark” in the west of the plot is a filter-zone between school and town. It enables an active lifestyle for both pupil and inhabitants.

The public space of the cluster always takes care of the different needs of various age groups. While the younger pupil have more areas to move, communi-cation and regeneration becomes increasingly more important in the older age. Design solutions like more green areas or seating accommodations, enable communication and allow to take care of different needs.

education

The concept of education is based on the principal of learning clusters. These clusters are composed of three clas-ses with 75 pupil until the ninth grade, later for only two classes. Every class is educated in conformity with age and performance. The close link of the individual classes in the cluster enab-les a teaching, which is more custom tailored fashion. Because of overlaps in service, there are more opportunities of differentiate education.

To put these ideas into practice organi-zation, operation and flexibility of traditi-onal designs needs to be rethought. Every cluster can be separated in up to four education rooms, plus a room for handicapped pupil, because of sliding walls and a mobile multifunctional ele-ment. Also every cluster has a loggia to read and relax. Furthermore there is the possibility of reorganization of the area towards only one big learning zone.

accomodation

A third of the pupil have the opportu-nity to live in the school, this corres-pondents to 350 inhabitants. To take care of the different groups of age, the inhabitants are also separated in three differentiate areas, like the clusters. With increasing age living becomes more individual and less group-related.

The classes 1-4, 5-8 and 9-12 live each together in one part of the building. The sleeping zone offers, beside the function of an intimate retreat, also areas of communication. These act as border in between the common living area and the private sleeping units. The offer of differentiate public zones enab-les more opportunities for the pupil.

daytime

During the day the buffer zone is connec-ted to the education rooms. This enables to extend the living zones of the cluster to 83%, which means 12340 m². The area of each pupil increases to 11.7 m².

nighttime

In the evening and during the night the flexible buffer zone is connected to the sleeping zones and increases the area to 80%. This is why the area of each inhabi-tant gets tripled from 6.5 m² to 18 m².

STUTTGART 21 - TROTZDEM„an architectural utopia“

row houses

The discussion about the train stati-on of „Stuttgart 21“raises the questi-on, if a built architectural utopia can exist in Germany. For this reason and the background of social as well as ecological changes a utopia for the inner city of Stuttgart shall be developed.

STUTTGART 21 - TROTZDEM | ACADEMIC PROJECT | 6. SEMESTER | 2011

first ideas

The main idea is to offer living in a landscape park in the middle of Stuttgart without affecting the welcoming quality of park visitors’. On the other hand the inhabitants also deserve high living quality to guarantee regeneration and privacy. The traditional cave houses in Matmata, Tunesia, are taken as reference. These protect the inhabitants against enemies, because they can only be discovered with difficulty. Also they enable a pre-tempering of hot desert air to keep the rooms constant cool inside.

density

After analyses of pos-sible plots in the park for the new house typology, it’s easy to reach a density like in Schwerin, a german town. For a park area, which doesn’t fit with traditional living issues a density of 700 inhabitants/km² is considerable.

design concept

The plot is in the middle of the “Schloß-park”. The vegetation and a pedestrian way, which can be used for the main access of the building, are predomina-ting. The park as part of the town prohi-bits an ordinary building looked to heigth, because of visitors’ regeneration and climate issues. To prevent the destruc-tion of the landscape or important views, the suggestion is to build in the depth. Furthermore it enables the circulation of important cold air towards the city center. The organic shape enables a flexible arrangement and orientation of the uses and can take care of existing vegetation. The uses are adjusted to the caused structure and filled programmatically. This creates a city within the city. The western and northern surface of the façade, which cannot be seen by passing pedestrians, is used for living. The other parts of the building are filled with more public uses like cafeteria or kindergar-ten. Because of the indirect sunlight the south-eastern part of the building is an office complex.

VOLKSPARK„ludwigsburg oßweil“

urban planningThe urbanistic master plan „Entwicklungsbe-reich Oststadt und Oßweil“ is to create the ba-sics for a balanced planning in face of complex conditions. The topic sport shall be improved and be extended at the location. In terms of inner-city development a structural densifica-tion is important. The opportunity to establish a mixture of functions all over the area optimizes the neighborhoods.

living/ landscape park

urban planning living/ landscape park Ludwigsburg, GER

concept

The dominating element of the design „Volkspark Ludwigsburg“ is the outdoor space. He serves as space of living and experience and offers spots to do sports or movement activities. On the margins to the bordering quarters the link is an open building structure. This enables, that the qualities of the new green center, can have a positive effect in the existing neighborhoods. This is guaranteed by an overlap of built and green spaces, as well as a programmatic density of urban functions in the ground floors. Notable examples are the park access points. The-se have the function of linking the existing neighborhoods and are highlighted by big buildings with special uses.

development design

The new buildings are arranged at the borders of the area and continue the exis-ting urban size as well as the infrastructure. At the same time a new consistent element of building clusters is implemented. Size and orientation of each structure enables many different housing typologies. The public spaces in between are designed to generate a differentiate offer of private and common areas. A compre-hensive range of informal sport activities and living uses encourage the vitality of the East of Ludwigsburg and offer a buffer zone in view of noise pollution against more intensive sport activities in the center.

Volkspark

The topic “Volkspark” is the guiding principle for the development of the open space to generate a progressive and major change. The open spaces offer a host of different uses to stay and move. The margins of each area are designed very permeable. Topographic elements, fields of trees and playing grounds emerge a totally new picture. From “Berliner Platz” to “Bebenhäuser Straße” a service axis guarantees the access to the park by a delicate web of paths. The stadium as well as a central meeting point (athletes’ village) is loca-ted at this main road. This enables an important point of attraction by clustering the service infrastructure of all sport clubs at one point. The clubs keep the existing allocation to their sports areas, but also generate a new network, which enables new forms of cooperation. In between of each building many leisure time uses are possible and the ambience of a cozy village is created. Starting from the center to the noisy sport zones the uses of the park get more and more quiet to the margins. This enables living areas with high living qualities. Also the park is largely free from motorized traffic and offers attractive pedest-rian and bicycle connections. To sum up a complete new picture is generated, which is relatively easy to implement and can be done step by step.

athletes‘ village

Center of the complete area is the athletes’ village, which enables club houses in a high density and coope-ration in between. The location is not only an arrangement of buildings, but offers many of activities to do sports or to play. This generates many synergy effects. The athletes’ village shall not only be frequented during sport events and training times, but also by park vi-sitors, idle men and amateurs. Sporting trends, playing grounds and a big interactive water feature at the central square are like magnets and make the athletes’ village, as well as the establis-hed clubs more attractive.

living

Housing estates are locations of individual lifestyles in a special way. Not only families, but singles, couples without children, living communities, old and handicapped people search for a home in the East of Ludwigs-burg. This is why the offer shall take care of everyone’s needs to generate an interesting and stable mixture of inhabitants. Furthermore the idea is to offer an adequate number of diverse living spaces with special characteris-tics to fulfill all requirements.

The open building structure enables a relati-onship between inhabitants and the park, to bring advantages to the people. The buildings are arranged in an ensemble and share un-derground parking. A differentiate configura-tion of public, semi-public and private spaces create a smooth switchover to the park. The size of the new buildings is adapted to the existing ones and offers many opportunities to live. The aim of the project is to provide a diversity of developer models to make the-se areas more interesting for joint building ventures.
