FISH OBSERVATORY

Response of the FensUniversity of Lincoln, Third year, 2013Project Tutor: Simone Medio

The main theme of the studio was, through a cultural and

technological research, to observe the Lincolnshire

Fenlands in different perspectives. As a result of this, the

goal of this investigation is to create a response to an

existing issue of the region through a rural study.

The Lincolnshire Fenlands used to be a natural region

flooded by increasing sea and river water levels. However,

this flood was and still is the main risk for the Fauna, the

Flora, the agriculture, and the infrastructure of the area

(South Holland parish council offices).

The idea itself answers to the main principles of an

ecological and agricultural life, particularly the relationship

between people and nature as well as architecture and

technology combined with nature. As a result, the propor-

tion is narrowed down facing the location and focuses on

the links among the different observing spaces as well as

the educational and shopping space.

STARS OBSERVATORY

Response of the Fens

University of Lincoln, Third year, 2013

Project Tutor: Simone Medio

A reaction to a current concern is called a response. In

architecture, the term response could be present in many

areas, social, economical, environmental, technical,

ecological, etc.

However, an architectural response does not only try to

solve the problem, but also to avoid future issues. Along

these lines, “Architecture should inspire people to use

their own resources, to move into the future.”-Tadao

Ando.

Carrying on with my research, the idea of understanding

the whole ecosystem of this concrete zone started to take

shape. Therefore, this site has different habitats and

terrains, and to look at all of them it is necessary to create

different observation spaces with considered orientation.

Fogueres experimentales

Alicante, Spain / 2015

Project jury: La Foguera Pla del Bon Repòs –

La Goteta

The goal of the competition Fogueres Experimentales and

Innovative is intended to encourage and recognize artistic

and creative values of those foguerers monuments, which

by its elements and treatment of themes and materials

being innovative or experimental concept.

The “Hogueras of Alicante” have been for many decades

a very important tradition in the whole Spain. This compe-

tition is seeking for an innovative and ecological proposal

of a pavilion.

This modern pavilion will be then at the end of the cere-

mony be burned and everyone living in the neighbour-

hood will gather around as well as enjoy it for a month.

ART STUDIOSLincoln Art centres

Univeristy of Lincoln, UK / 2012

Project Tutor: John Napier

With this project you are asked to explore bringing light

(and ventilation) into the interior of the plan on a

constrained site through shafts/ lightwells/ stairways as

well as through well managed windows and openings

within the various façades.

A clear distinction in your work should be made between

daylight (from the North is traditional popular for studios

and from a Standard Overcast Sky) and sunlight which

can enliven interiors but also cause glare.

Studios should benefit from light from perimeter windows

and borrowed light from shafts if possible. The height of

these rooms should be considered especially at perimeter

conditions.

YOGA CENTRELincoln Health Centre

Univeristy of Lincoln, UK / 2012

Project Tutor: John Napier

Having chosen (and in choosing) a small building to

design and develop, you should acknowledge that this

project is designed to stretch the boundaries of your

technical knowledge and skill.

Your finished work should explain how the structure is

built, and integrate the various elements elegantly in 3

dimensions.

The quality of your proposal will be visible from the

concept through to the detail of its realisation. This

detailed quality will be both in both visual and construc-

tion terms, where inside and outside meet.

FIGMENT COMPETITIONIZASKUN CHINCHILLAARCHITECTS

Figment pavilion ompetitionIzaskun hinchilla Architects, 2015First PrizeArchitectural Intern

Instead of a typical design competition, the City of Dreams Pavilion asks entrants to consider how they will construct this temporary structure in the most efficient and sustainable way possible.

Entrants should consider the entire lifecycle of building materials in their submission. Whether they do this by identifying companies that produce “cradle to cradle” products, garnering sponsorships from environmental or socially conscious groups, or re-using waste from construction sites, the materials used and the installation process should have as little impact as possible on the environment.

Established in 2013 by Polish-Jewish American business-

man and philanthropist Zygmunt Rolat, the Remembrance

and Future Foundation has tasked itself with creating a

Commemoration of Poles who rescued Jews during the

German occupation. The Commemoration is to be built in

the vicinity of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews

and will be entirely financed by private donations from the

Jewish community in Israel and abroad.

The project has received the support of the President of

the Republic of Poland, the Mayor of the City of Warsaw

and the leadership of the Museum of the History of Polish

Jews.

The project is being overseen by the Polish Committee

and Foundation’s International Committee, which features

representatives of various Jewish communities in Israel

and abroad. Its members include: Zygmunt Rolat –

chairman, Hanoch Gutfreund (Israel); Corinne Evens

(France); Elżbieta Ficowska, Konstanty Gebert, Adam Rotfeld, Michael Schudrich (Poland); Michael Berkowicz,

ECO HOTELS DESIGNIZASKUN CHINCHILLAARCHITECTS

Izaskun Chinchilla architects is working in several eco-re-

sorts in Ibiza Island and abroad. We are making a big

effort to make people feel at home even when they are

abroad.

We are referring our design work to the notion of ‘biophil-

ia’, that has been recently adressed by several authors in

the field of architectural design. Biophilic spaces and

objects, are supposed to connect with natural preferenc-

es of humans, determined by their physiology.

These preferences include natural light, vegetation, a

particular rage of materials, specific color arrangements

and spatial conditions reminding natural landscapes. A

more sophisticated definition of biophilia is deeply

informed by perception, psychology or social studies.

GARCIMUÑOZ CASTLEIZASKUN CHINCHILLAARCHITECTS

Garcimuñoz Castle, SpainIzaskun hinchilla Architects, 2014Architectural Intern

Garcimuñoz Castle, in the Spanish province of Cuenca, was first the site of a 10th-century Moorish citadel, before becoming residence for the prominent Villena family in the 12th century and, from 1708, the site of a church that is still in use today. The castle is therefore a complex site of built additions and partial demolitions from different historical periods. The current poor state of conservation makes it difficult to show its full heritage value.

This innovative refurbishment consolidates and reinforces ruins from Arab, Medieval and Neoclassical times. It adds contemporary architectural value to the building's heritage, while transforming the castle into sustainable and safe spaces for the public to visit.

The refurbishment introduces a network of footbridges, platforms, stairs and rails. Its elements are strategically placed to differentiate the building's different historical periods and to highlight views of building parts from architectural periods that have not been seen together before. The renovation can be said to work as an orthographic system enabling us to decipher a chaotic and incomplete inherited 'text'.

EUROPEAN ARCHITECTURESTUDENTS ASSEMBLY

European OrganisationBritish Leader since 2013Architectural Workshops

European Architecture Student Assembly was founded in 1981 by architect students like Geoff Haslam and Richard Murphy and is closely related to the Winterschool concept, which organises similar events for UK students of architecture. EASA takes place each summer in a different country, with the event usually lasting two weeks.

It is organised by students of architecture for students of architecture and the concept is operated on a cooperative basis. In fall at INCM, Intermediate National Contact Meeting, the location for EASA is decided one and a half year in advance. Typically 400 students take part in the event and engage in workshops, exhibitions, lectures and social events loosely based around a specific theme.

These events are run by a combination of academics and students and encompass a wide variety of activities with a greater or lesser relationship to architecture. The event is funded through a combination of attendance fees (which vary for each country based upon ability to pay), grants and sponsorship, all arranged by the organising committee for each event.
