The plot main feature is the fact that it is backed to the existing wall in the allotment, which is 15 meters tall. With that in mind, the core intention is to create a clear relation between the new construction and the wall, which as a great importance within the plot due to the fact that it is one of the walls of the building that is shared by all its floors.All interior spaces are developed in order to feel protected and surrounded by the wall. For that purpose, it was created a space mesh composition, organized in regard to always create a protagonist central space while consistently involving the remaining spaces.This concept was made in the Art Gallery, whose vital part is an area with a triple ceiling situated on the lowest floor, where all spaces have views. That allows the area to be used to exhibit pieces of relevant art. In a single-family housing this concept consists of a small and cozy central patio, to which the remaining areas of the house are directed. Having both areas a strong and continuing relation with the pre-existing wall.This organization allows the existing small spaces to appear larger due to the fact that they are open and connect to each other, both physically and visually, and therefore do not became too close.

Taking into account the characteristics of the site intervention, it's easy to note an obvious need to create a public path that connects the lower and highest level, offering an occupied and qualified space inside the urban block.This path should relate to the proposed buildings and the different levels of the ground. So, in order to intensify this relation, the concept aims to create a continuous connection between the public and private spaces, which intersect along the site. By that means, between the two main entrances of the block, are designed several crossings through the buildings, that enhance its public character, nevertheless providing the privacy of the housing. This idea aims to establish a contrast whit the typical morphology of the city, where the buildings design blocks are surrounded by public sidewalks with no connection whit the private inside of the blocks.This new proposal intends to create a kind of a community space, supported by the green areas and living spaces enclosed by the volumes of buildings, where the residents and the visitors can get along. The new proposed areas are the extension of the massive trees that exist in the square located on the lowest level. The new green areas were designed in order to lead people to the commercial areas on the ground floor of each building, moving them away from the private access to housing and offices on the opposite direction.The facades design was idealized in order to create equal openings from the houses and offices to the public paths and patios. The floor plan, as well as the facade of the new constructions, is organized by a square mesh composition to which several parts were subtracted in order to create the patios. The facades are covered by a skin of vertical sliding wood slats, with the exception the commercial floor, allowing the residents to control their privacy and sun protection according to its needs.

The project for four houses is located in the midst of a block in Amoreiras, previously occupied by abandoned annexes with access via a small path defined by a gap between the two existing buildings.This path extends to a massive garden hidden from the public eye, where it’s planned the construction of two blocks that are connected by a continuous roof. That defines a single volume covered by a black corrugated metal skin, remaining unnoticed by the public street.The proposal interprets the lifestyles of the future Lisbon society, tending to senior one-person household. Being the main concept the “community life”, where the housing area only consists of private spaces while the collective area is based on a central space of sharing and socializing with common dining, living and working rooms, strategically located on the ground floor of the two existing buildings where the space is adapted to receive the new functions.Taking into account the degradation of these buildings, a few interventions were made in order to regenerate the space. However trying to maintain the original configuration of the houses on the 1st and 2nd floor and preserving the memory of the traditional architecture.The new construction is a light wooden structure with a raised floor system. The contemporary houses, designed for one person, respond to the demands of the life in the future Lisbon. In order to efficiently maximize the space is introduced a single volume located in the center where all the services are accommodated, dividing the open plan into different uses such as: living room, kitchenette, bathroom and the sleeping/working area. A hallway provides the access to all the areas and privacy to the upstairs. The lighting is ensured by ceiling openings and windows generously open to the backyard garden.

The Amoreiras Towers have assumed themselves in the 80’s as a strong landmark in the city profile and constituted a new civic life. Facing this, are the old barracks of Artilharia Um, which are restricted to the public by a wall, virtually functionless and lacking an urban redevelopment able to offer new activities to the site. Our proposal intends to link these two realities: the mass of the block of the Torre das Amoreiras and the void of the Artilharia Um quarter. We started by working the empty quarter where we extend a huge flap that follows the curve of the adjacent street, an infrastructure that at first glance can be understood as a simple higher walkway, but is able to solve two major urban problems of the area: the offer of green public spaces and a possible solution to the mobility problem in Lisbon. A flap that always has the same height rises from the ground where the terrain allows it, and becomes an extension of the existing sidewalk, opening an alternative route, as well as areas with different configurations: in one place it gives access to a existing car park where you can rent a bike for a day or share a car; in another moment, qualifies a space for those waiting for a tram or a bus; the terrain goes down and opens an amphitheatre facing the metro entrance which is also public walkway to Amoreiras Shopping Center. Within the block minimal interventions where made, after clearing the terrain, paths of compact dirt were suggested by the spontaneous crossing of the terrain and the mass of trees also remained. It is intended that this block be understood as a new centrality, a complementary extension to the program of the Torre das Amoreiras, but this time characterizing an open and flexible space for each of us, whose occupation doesn’t follow rules and where the shadow and light games, the natural topography and elevated walkway are sufficiently defining programs and functions.

This work, included in a wide post-colonial study about the former Portuguese territories in Africa, was launched due to the commemorations of the African independence leader Amilcar Cabral’s birth (1924-1973) in that city on the Geba riverbank, ninety years ago. The research had as main goal the recognition of the urban changes of Bafatá and the designing of an ephemeral structure with the purpose of preserving and showing Cabral’s life and thoughts, for the use of the city population.The city center is strongly marked by the Portuguese colonial presence, visible in the urban design. It is around the boulevard, which articulates the main entrance in town from the river Geba, that the blocks layout was organized. At the bottom of the main city axis, close to the River Geba, is located a square where the Amilcar Cabral bust was raised. The city center of Bafatá remains sparsely populated and depressed and the growth along the national roads net was elected by the population, which entailed that the city had turned its backs to River Geba, displacing its centre to the outside of its original limits. This way, we propose the use of low cost ephemeral structures, with easy installation and dismantling elements (modules), allowing the setting of different programmatic elements along the river front, in order to regenerate it and attract the natives who lives mostly in the huge and informal periphery surrounding the nuclear settlement. More important than develop an ephemeral program, is improving the exterior spaces and valorize the existing as well as redesign the roads system, allowing a better affluence to the center, with the reconstruction of a bridge by the natives, encouraging the collective effort and self-management, offering a landmark to this city. The reflection on the riverfront subject, supports at the same time a thought about the ventilation. It’s performed efficiently with the support of the river proximity, since the cold winds of the south-west run through the construction from grids located on the slightly raised floor, while the hot air goes out from the mismatched gabled roof. The sun protection is ensured by the balanced roof, creating peripheral galleries.

Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain in Continental Portugal . The “Templo das Águas” building (in English stands for Water Temple), is a SPA which will be located on the north of the Hotel Serra da Estrela, communicating with it through a tunnel linking the north side of the hotel to the reception area of the SPA and consecutively to the other spaces of the new complex.Many volumetric studies were done with the main concept of a split among the rocks. This fissure becomes in a lot of routes inside de construction and finish in various small patios. The volume always seems that arises among the rocks and reveals itself. The aim is to create different environments in the approach to the main spaces. In the central core, the building articulates a range of thematic spaces (such as hot and cold baths, the “laconium”, saunas and Turkish baths, etc.), around the space of the indoor swimming pool.The structure designed for the building consists in an assembly of walls, wall-beams and reinforced concrete slabs (shell structure), with structural and aesthetic functions simultaneously, once all the surfaces are in apparent Concrete. The span of the slabs goes from 8.00m and 10.00m in current cases, however there are two bodies balanced with a span of about 7.50m, supported by wall-beams. The structure is located at altitudes ranging between 1482.00 to 1493.00m, being located in an aggressive environment in various ways (with great variations in temperature range, freeze / thaw, snow, wind, etc.).

This solution refers to a building with dwellings in band, characterized by a covering of relevant expression in Southeast elevation, which displays inferiorly the materiality of wood structure. The building is characterized by a grilling in prefabricated concrete elements, which standardizes the Southeast façade functioning as a sunscreen and eye protection clotheslines. This grilling opens in alignment of spans, which according to a rational composition allows ventilate rooms and kitchens. Northwest side of the building features a facade of brick painted of white.The houses are characterized by great simplicity in terms of its internal organization, offering few partition walls. Took advantage of concurrency is space, which will be enhanced by the integration of some mobile structures, mutant mode, organizing the interior pathways, creating the necessary privacies inside homes.The buildings, functioning as autonomous units, were thought to be aligned in the band, completing in this way is compositional harmonization of the elevations. Replication of units built in the set will create a horizontal, low jig; from the point of view of integration of the built landscape have an interesting result.The layout of buildings provides a longitudinal crossing in an intermediate portion of the topographic elevation, this was facilitating by a route of conditioning access to vehicles and entering the dwelling floor 0. Another option involves the layout of buildings in the Northwest end of the plot, getting free to leave a wide area exposed to the Southeast, where the arable plots are deployed. Through the areas of roads and public space in the upper bound of the plot, and arable land areas to support agricultural activities were installed.

The exhibition “Africa - Visions of the colonial urbanization office”, installed in Belem Cultural Center, proposes to take the visitors through an African landscape that was designed (and reinvented) from Lisbon, the heart of the ‘mother country’, during the final period of Portuguese colonization (1944-1974). It is also the visual narrative of an architectural learning process that began in late 1944 with the creation of the Colonial Urbanization Office. Here we embarked on a journey to the urbanization of the Portuguese colonies in Africa (São Tomé and Príncipe, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Angola) in a time when the current regime needed to put them in a equal footing with the metropolis. This way, a several projects with different functional programmes are built on this locations, mainly town planning, sewage works, health, education, housing etc. The exhibition is organized in three nuclei. The main one is composed by reproductions of the architecture and urbanism drawings made in the Office, photographs taken during the sixties and seventies in Africa, and models made by students of Integrated Master of Architecture in ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon. This section is followed by a table presenting original documents: drawings, photographs and reports that identify the activities developed in this bureau. Finally, a set of five small spaces allows to show another kind of information: the architectural missions of recent researchers, illustrated with photographs of some of the buildings of the Office in contemporary times; interviews and reports of architects; two movies on Angola under construction. From the technical point of view, it's an exhibition with a configuration that can be considered more alternative. The drawings are as simple as an element glued to the ground, while the images and models are hanging from the ceiling. Considering this is a large exhibition room, it creates an environment different from what we are used to in a "classical" exhibition.

The proposal utilizes the square configuration of the site to yield a square plan layout of four corner flats, all with dual aspect views. At the center of the plan is a naturally lit staircase. The innovation of the proposal lies in the staggered section: the entry to each flat is individually staggered upon quarter landings to give a sense of uniqueness and identity. The first flat is a fully accessible wheelchair user flat is strategically located at street level and close to the proposed building entrance. The layout and configuration of all residential units have been developed in compliance with Lifetime Home standards. Privacy is created for the remaining units through ‘stepped elevation’ from the ground. The second flat is 750mm from the ground such that the bottom of the window sill is 1750mm above ground or beyond eye level. All units have private outdoor amenity in the form of a recessed balcony which provides for wet weather usage. The ground floor (wheelchair accessible) unit has direct access a semi-private landscape area / garden. The undercroft area in the south-west corner of the building contains 16 safe and secure cycle parking spaces and a waste storage area, both accessible by a ramp. The undercroft area in the north-west corner of the building is well lit and secured and offers a social space whose purpose can be determined through public consultation.

The Spotted Dog is a designated heritage asset. The proposal seeks to preserve through retention and enhance through selective removal certain poor quality additions which have accumulated over time. These include the ‘clip on’ modern additions dating from the 20th Century so as to reveal and enhance both the original and historic (accumulated) fabric. In relation to the new building proposal, there are three main Heritage considerations: The historic setting of the Spotted Dog has evolved dramatically since its construction in 1665 (est.) when it was a country house well outside the City of London’s walls. As a result of urban expansion, today the Spotted Dog finds itself no longer located in a rural setting but in an urban setting. With this proposal there is a desire for the Heritage to be returned to a ‘green setting’ although recognizing that this will impact on the parking provision. An assessment of the proposed scale of the new development both in relation to the Spotted Dog and to the surrounding context was undertaken. This was to ensure that the majority of the significant historic fabric of the Spotted Dog is unaffected by the proposal and that it will constitute an enhancement of the significance of the heritage asset
