The concept for this proposal comes from the notorious skyline from Porto city’s Ribeira. It helped us divide the struture in three spaces that would house up to a maximum of four peo-ple. This comes from the typical con-struction of the city’s housing blocks, that are subdivided into slim and deep plots. These have different ele-vations, but are always adjacent to one another, forming a structure and as a block, a city scape. Have taken this idea, we started to manipulate the areas into our needs, ending up with a flexible metal structure and wooden finished shelter. The factor of planing the space for more than one person is meant to avoid envy and dispute factors and this was important to us. With this we try also to include a so-cial factor between sharing homeless.

The generator principle of this project is the preservation of the identi-ty of the place, as far as possible. More-over, this is constituted by a set of tem-porary elements added timelessly as an emergency they were architecture.In this project we try to combat this, giv-ing the space a structure that involved and generate visual and practical po-tential. The proposed structure is versa-tile and allows a wide recognition in mar-ket days, fulfilling much of its purpose.

On the other hand, the skin attach to it, assumes some different shapes and characteristics admittedly, to make room for a new program, we propose a function different time, as is the case of the restaurant. The main entrance is the pivot of the entire proposal and thus we assign it the prominence it had, but needed to be even more significant.

A dissertação incide sob o Isolato di Messina, que se reflete através da realização de um projeto, a quando da minha estadia enquanto aluna Erasmus. Este tem implicita toda uma componente teórica abor-dada no âmbito do Quarteirão como ideia de cidade, fundamental na realização deste trabalho de investi-gação. O que se propõe é uma reflexão apoiada num conjunto de análises e estudos, quer sobre o locus, quer sobre modelos arquitetónicos, que procurem validar to-dos os raciocínios atingidos para o processo interventi-vo. A estrutura organiza-se em 5 partes. Neste sen-tido, primeiramente, temos a introdução onde apre-sentamos o enquadramento ao tema, o âmbito, a mo-tivação, e conse- quentemente, definimos os objetivos deste trabalho, a metodologia adotada, assim como, o estado da arte. No capítulo I, numa contextualização mais teórica, procurou-se eviden- ciar determinadas considerações sobre o quarteirão explorando o seu conceito e todo o seu percurso evolutivo, abordando como referências importantes exemplos do urbanismo mundial que sustentam o tema e contribuíram para o seu subsequente desenvolvimento. No capítulo II, pro-cedemos à abordagem do novo conceito de quar-teirão, no âmbito con- temporâneo. Deste modo, à luz de uma análise comparativa, são apresentados proje-tos contemporâneos com intuito de assimilar diferentes atitudes dos arquitetos exercidas sob o quarteirão tradi-cional. Em seguida, passa-se à especificidade no tem-po e no espaço, seguido da apresentação da propos-ta no lugar, com o capítulo III. Finaliza-se a investigação, concluindo a possib-ilidade de acupuntura entre o tradicional e o contem-porâneo, num diálogo harmonioso de novas formas, que se comple- mentam a um espaço urbano consol-idado, capazes de conservar a identidade urbana da cidade numa nova linguagem contemporânea.

CIDADE - QUARTEIRÃO - IDENTIDADE - MEMÓRIA

MASTER’S THESISorientation by architect Alberto Estima

The focus of dissertation is on the Isolato di Messina, that is reflected through a project, elabo-rated while on my Erasmus. This project has complex theoretical background on the theme of the urban block as an idea of city building, that is the bases of this investigation.

We propose an educated thinking, based on a set of studies and analyses of the locus and of architectural models, that will validate all of the ac-knowledgements achie- ved for the intervention pro-cess. Structurally, it is divided in five parts. First, there is an introduction where we present the theme and its reach, its motivation, followed by its goals, methodology and previous works. On the first chap-ter, in a more theoretical sense, we make clear cer-tain aspects of the city block, exploring its concept and its shapes along history, reaching to important global examples of urbanism the sustain this theme and have contributed for its development. On the second chapter, we proceeded on the contempo-rary approach to the city block. This way, with basis on a comparative analyses, we show contemporary projects with the intent of learning different positions of architects on the tradition city block. Next, we fo-cus on the time and location, followed on the third chapter by the pre- sentation of the proposal on its location.

We finish this investigation, with the conclu-sion that there is a real possibi- lity of merging the traditional and the contemporary ways, in a harmo-nious dialog of new shapes, that link with the con-solidated urban space, capable of conserving the urban iden- tity of the city with a new contemporary language.
