BORCHUREDESCRIPTION: A brochure show casing hikes for a pretend hotel

surrounded by hikes.

PROGRAMS USED:Adobe Indesign

Adobe Illustrator

COURSE: Communications 130-12

INSTRUCTOR: Ben Pingel

OBJECTIVE:Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.Create an original, new logo and use it in a bro-chure. Incorporate quality images. Incorporate atleast four quality images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutoutshape of the image. Write at least 250 words oforiginal copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders. Trim for a full bleed and print induplex (two-sided) color.

PROCESS:I first had to try and think of something I wantedto make a brochure about. I really couldn’t think ofeverything. I wanted to us my own pictures and asI looked through them I decided to use my hikingpictures. I then draw up a logo. I then used Ado-be Illustrator to bring it to life. I knew I wanted apathway because that is what hikes are like. I thenpicked a type of fold. I decided overlay because

it was different from what I typically see around. Iset it up in Adobe Indesign. I used the rulers quicka bit to make sure things lined up. Once I printedmy project I realized how much I really did likethe overlay. Next I gathered pictures I wanted touse and set those aside. I then brought them overand went through different layouts trying to findsomething that worked. I honestly had a hard timefinding white space since it was so little.

LOGOSDESCRIPTION:Create three logos that represent one company

using different styles.

PROGRAMS USED:Adobe Illustrator

COURSE: Communications 130-12

INSTRUCTOR: Ben Pingel

OBJECTIVE:Create three completely different, original logos tofit a company or personal image that will appeal tothe audience. Do not imitate existing logos or useprevious designs. Use only the Illustrator tools tocreate and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fab-ricated flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-trac-ing. You may use an image or drawing as a guideto trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the imagebefore submitting.) Gather opinions from at least

ten people about which logo appeals most to them.

PROCESS:First I thought of a business I could create a logofor. I’ve always wanted to own a bakery becausebaking is my passion so I decided a bakery. Ihave heard of several bakeries called sweet cakesso I thought I would use that name. I try to thinkof what I would want out a logo. I thought a cake, cupcake, or just a small sign. I then drew outsome sketches of what I could do. I then usedillustrator to recreate them. I mostly used the pen

tool to create my logo.

PHOTO DESIGNDESCRIPTION:

A poster show casing my photo shop skills.

PROGRAMS USED:

Adobe Photo ShopCOURSE: Communication 130-12

INSTRUCTOR: Ben Pingel

OBJECTIVE:Learn basic photography skills. Choose a colorscheme, take a photo to match those colors, thenincorporate the colors into the layout. Use a digi-tal camera to take a quality image, then downloadit. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-de-structive editing.) Size and crop the image, thenplace on an 8.5×11 page layout. Use layers todesign text, and repeating graphic elements in Pho-toshop. Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8″

(0.125) from all four sides.

PROCESS:First, I decided my color scheme. I decided orangeand blue because they are complementary colors.I figured orange was a good choice because it falland there is probably a lot to take pictures of thatis orange. I walked around my apartment complex, and I didn’t really find anything interesting. Final-ly, I decided to take pictures with my pumpkins, pumpkin lights, and wreath. I thought it was a niceway to welcome fall. Then I edited my picture,

cropping, levels, color saturation, color vibrancy, sharpness, and selective color. After I had thepicture, and the colors I wanted to do I do a fewsketches. When I had tired my ideas in photo shopit was transformed into what you see here. Someof the things I intended to do did not look very

good with the colors. It looked too busy.

together gradually without deleting pixels.

PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Photo Shop

Learn toblend two or more images together gradually, usingmasks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshopskills for layout with multiple elementsUse a mask to apply a filter to one part of the

image. Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scriptures…your choice). Format type:Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size.

Theme word(s).Select good quality images.

PROCESS:I knew I wanted to do something with the temple.I love the temple and how each of the templesare so beautiful. I decided to use the temple myhusband and I were married in. The Saint GeorgeUtah Temple. That really seemed to bring thingstogether. I really wanted to us an illustration be-cause I felt like it changed the tone of the photo.I tried applying the filter to the temple photo, but

each time I felt like it changed the whole balanceof the picture. Finally I decided to try it on thepicture of Christ. It looked good so I decided touse the brush tool to feather out the edges on thepicture. First I used the hard brush to take theedges away. Next I took the hardness away andthen lower the opacity down and slowly brushedaway the hard edges. Over all, this really helpedme know how to use Photoshop a lot better. Ireally feel like I could photo shop a lot of my ownpictures that I take.

First I scanned an image. Then I wrote out someideas for the ad. I finally came up with an ideathat I liked and made sense for my picture. I typedout my content so I could have an idea of howmuch text I was going to work with. Then I de-cided how I was going to incorporate my picture. If I was going to have it small or large.
