DESIGN POINTS
The site is located in a large commercial district, which is one of centers of the city. The roads in the south and east are two main roads, and the northern road is a pedestrian street. The central park in the northwest of the site provides a great natural view for our site, the lake in the park can be borrowed as a view for our site.
The exhibition hall is supposed to provide spaces for large-scale art and cultural exhibitions, including indoor and outdoor ones.
1 As a public building, the design should give enough public space for people to stay and share.2 The lake in the northwest is an available and free resource, which should be used effectively in the design.3 The exhibition hall is for art and cultural exhibitions, so the concept of the design and the outline of the building should have something to do with arts, culture or surroundings.
SITE ANALYSIS
The roads in the east and south of site are two main roads of the city, so the main facades should face southeast. Additionally, the road in the north is a pedestrian, so the main entrances need to be set in the south.
Most people wil l come from the shopping malls in the southeast, so a public square is necessary.
Exhibi t ion hal l needs suf f ic ien t daylight, so we can set various windows to get natural light.
The lake in the nor th west is an excellent view which can be imported, so I set the outdoor show spaces in the coner.
The entrances of parking lot can not be set in the circle with a radius of 80m, so the parking lot is the in the southwest of the site.

"WATER WAVE" THINKING PROCESS
Arts have something in common with water, for example, they both have numberless forms and shapes; they can be solid, liquid or even gaseous; they are visible sometimes, and sometimes they are audible. Given the connection between them, I select to use “water wave” as the concept of the design to show my understanding of the exhibition hall. What’s more, the “water wave” exhibition hall is also associated with the lake subtly, which matches its surroundings.

BACKGROUND AND FACTORS
CHALLENGES
The land is in a university, next to an existing building of Architecture. In the west of the site, there is a developing land for phase 2 of the arts center in five years. The architecture arts center can be considered as a new part of the existing building, and the function spaces of which include: study spaces, exhibition spaces and meeting spaces.
The fusion of the phase 1 and phase 2 of the arts center is a challenge of the design, I decide to use the same element to make both of them to become a harmonious whole.

SCALABILITY
SHAPE SELECTIONS
Many graphics have scalability, which enable them to scale infinitely. The feature can be made use of to deal with the relationship between the existing land and developing land.
Many shapes have the feature of scalablity. After comparing some common shapes of them, I decide to select a kind of scalable pentagon as the element to scale the plan from phase 1 to the phase 2.

FUNCTIONS
As a developing part of old building of Architecture, the arts center is supposed to serve for students, teachers and visitors. After analyzing activities in the old building, we should provide following function spaces: exhibition spaces, spaces for team projects, model making and individual study, something like café, auditorium and outdoor spaces for mini professional activities.

ROOT OF CONCEPTSTRUCTURE TESTING
The same area can be covered by various architectural forms, like cube and surfaces. Since the curve conception, I decided to use a structure linked to dances to cover regular plans.
The process of design is to change a 2D square in to a 3D cover gradually with the consideration of structure stablity.
To test the stability of the structure, I made a simplified structure with wooden strips.
Reticulated shell is a kind of rigid structure, which can be seen as an whole in mechanical system. The shells will rock if they are not fixed. In the design, I fixed the shells with a series of flexible cables to ensure the structure in a flexible stablity.

THE FIRST ITERATION THE SECOND ITERATION THE THIRD ITERATION THE FORTH ITERATION IMITATION OF NATURE
THE ROOT OF CONCEPT "NATURE" WHY TREE ?
DIGITALIZATION OF TREE ---- L-SYSTEM
TO PUT "NATURE" IN TO THE BUILDING
On one hand, the products of the world wide famous juice company are various fruit and vegetable juice, and these products are extracted from natural fresh fruits and vegetables. On the other hand, the enterprising spirit is “Green Juice, Green Life”, which could be translated into “healthy and natural”. Therefore, I started my designing with the concept of “natural”.
Why choose “tree” to be the root? Let’s find out the advantages of the tree-like structure.
The juice of this company must be healthy and fresh!
Serving as structures Covering interior spaces Giving people a instinctive association of "NATURE"
Coordinate system + & / \_ ^
The growth of trees is a process of generation of self-similar fractals, and the process can be digitized into a kind of mathematical model called L-system. This model can describe the growing process correctly by its formal grammar.“F” in the grammar means one step forward, and following are the meaning of other symbols in L-system, each of them means a rotation.
There are a variety of forms in the nature, and each of them can reflect the nature. Then, the question is “Which one should I pick to combine it with my design?” . After polling several natural forms of animals, plants, insects and those in the microscopic and inorganic world, I decided to choose “tree” to be the natural element.

LONDON NEW YORK SHANGHAI BERLIN BARCELONA MELBOURNE
At the same time, in many cities a huge number of roof spaces and building gaps are being wasted, so we are trying to make use of these spaces to provide professional sport fields for X game players.
POPULARITY OF URBAN SPORTS URBAN INFILL + URBAN SPORTS
Urban sports are more and more popular around the world, but some research showed that urban sports players cannot find enough professional field for their sports.
Around the world, urban sports are really welcome in many countries. The map below are displaying the top 20 countries in which skate boarding, BMX are most popular sports. Urban infill is to transform the wasted roof spaces and building gaps into other functional spaces.

ROOF RESEARCH
Our site is in London, so the research is about the roof types in London, we found flat roofs could provide better occupation for our project. The three key words of the project is : URBAN INFILL, CONFIGURABLE and URBAN SPORTS. Our project is to infill wasted urban spaces to provide more space for urban sport players.

MATERIAL RESEARCH
Our spaces will be built over roofs or between buildings, so the requirements for the material is:
We found some hard material will turned soft after we cut some pa t te rn on i t , and different pattern will bring different features. Therefore, we started research on patterns.
We chose one pattern with proper softness and develop it into more shapes.

At this stage, we will put real funcions into the system, so we decided the size of the unit according to the truck and human size, and we also developed various types of spaces.
Based on physical mode, we use modelled these components in MAYA, and connected them according to different building context.

The space is in the center of a little square, so it could provide following functions: resting, chatting, doing sports and waiting.
The subject of the competition is to cover a 9m2 outdoor area, which can be used by people as a multi-function apce. The design should be built by 2-3 people in 3 days easily with a budget of 1000 RMB.
The space will show different shadows at different time of a day, so we can catch various views from it.
