vertrauen house: house of musicfargo, north dakota

Vertrauen house was designed for an international pilot

living in Fargo. She requested that the house be de-

signed around a song and the condence the song gives

her in dealing with new situations. The design boldly

addresses the public by stepping towards the street in

a tall, copper clad gesture, while the smoothness of the

melody is evident in the spatial relationships and move-

ment through the house. Intricacies of the song are

    related through the details.

canyon: boutique hotelspaceport america, las cruces, new mexico

The boutique hotel designed for Spaceport America,

a commercial space travel venture, is located in an

extremely harsh climate. The building is designed to

act like canyons, much cooler at the bottom than at the

top. The pool is centrally located to provide evaporative

cooling and a visual break from the sandy landscape.

An entirely glass ceiling in the guest rooms allows for

star watching by night in this remote location, while the

rammed earth canyon walls keep the space travelers

rmly grounded in earth to provide the maximum contrastbetween their stay at the hotel and the next days space

    ight.

bioclimatic high risetransbay, san francisco, united states

This team designed project is a multi-use high rise

designed for the Transbay neighborhood of San

Francisco. Located near to the proposed high speed rail

terminal the tower houses ofces, retail, residential, and

a vineyard. The ground level spaces were designed as a

pedestrian shortcut and meeting point, with a bridge and

cantilevered plaza that steps over an interstate offramp

that leads to downtown San Francisco. Operable

windows for fresh air and maximum daylighting for the

residences and the ofces reduces the cooling andlighting loads on the buildings drastically, while the

residential parks located once every four residential levels

allows for cross ventilation of every housing unit. The

vineyard on the top level can be watered by rainwater

    collected on the site.

    livingston school design competitionkigoma, tanzania

Livingston School in Kigoma, Tanzania was designed as

a school and community center for the village of Kigoma

on the east shore of Lake Tanganika. The majority of

construction and maintenance of the school would need

to be done by the villagers, so simple local construction

methods were necessary. Thick, rammed earth walls

with deep set windows were needed for cooling, and

a parasol roof of traditional thatch was layered over

corrugated metal also helped with the passive cooling.

Cross ventilation aligned with prevailing winds cyclesfresh air through the building. Performance and clinic

spaces, as well as a soccer pitch were provided for the

community in addition to the classroom spaces.

This experiment station along the missouri river coteau

region of North Dakota involves a completely closed

water recycling system with a series of holding and

cleansing ponds. The station monitors the water quality

of the Missouri River, a watershed that affects almost

one fth of the nation. The design of the building was

inspired by the colors of the prairie from the site applied

to a pure geometric form much in the style of the de Stijl

painters. The building also acts as an interpretive and

educational center to educate the public about waterquality and availability issues.
