A young couple and their 4 year old twin girls wanted a ludic

and happy apartment that could be enjoyed for parties and

kids as they like to. A extremely sensible work was made since

the concept phase once one of the girls is a handicap kid

and has her own necessities. Each door, a new world, each

room a completely new environment, different colour, texture

and materials combined for an tactile and visual experience.

The second floor is a free space surrounded by a wooden

rib structure that works as bench, sideboard and buffet

inside, but also as planter outside. Connected by a new

lift, this multifunctional space have: a barbecue area, a

swimming pool, a sauna, an inside and out linked kitchens,

a television and a videogame rooms, a dinner room

and a backyard movie theatre. The whole program was

developed with the couple and attended the needs in every

level, since the leisure, hygiene, to the technical issues.

SODRE OLD MAISON

SALVADOR, BRAZIL

The house from the 1700`s is in a bad conservation

state. What is left is a glimpse of the past which is

visible in the ruined walls of the façade. The years had

pass heavy on the building and the invasions originated

an illegal construction inside that made slabs between

the old high ceilings. These are now in front of the

windows.

The idea is to create a recessed tower with offices and

a restaurant in the lower levels with a new annexe in

a contemporary architecture to point out and separate

from the historical building.

This Neoclassical Palace date from the beginning of the past

Century is a beautiful heritage of the glorious time of the city

of Salvador. It was built in the peak of the Cacao advent

in the state of Bahia for the commerce owners assemblies.

Unfortunately, the series of events that culminated in the end

of the good harvests and the decay of the old centre and

the city itself also had a hard effect in the conservation of

the building. Part of our job that did not touch the preserved

areas was to adapt the place for a retail department store.

The new circulation was able to be made into the annexe, a

late portion of the building that had not patrimony value that

could be remodelled for a lift, escalators and emergency

stairs.

The proposal is to build a mixed building with residences,

commerce, co-working offices, arts ateliers and service. The

site is the centre of the city of Sao Paulo. The master plan

reserved the area for social housing with high density due to

the proximity with work spots and high infrastructure already

consolidated. The area was close to a big deactivated train

and bus stations and thorough the years lost it importance in

the city. Due to this process, the area suffered a great decay

and abandon. The emptiness not even in the night made

the environment vulnerable to violence, drugged people an

building invasions.

To densify the city is important and good when taking in

count the different scales of relationships between dwellers

and the levels of privacy that involves life in community. From

the city to the block, to the building, to the floor and finally

from door to door scales. To respect this scales and to offer

spaces which take into regard this relations corroborate for

the good experience in high density housing.

It’s good to highlight that a well-positioned building in the

urban fabric can, itself, be a structural spot and I believe

that this would be the better vocation to a building in this

site. Underestimated as a ground parking-lot in the corner

of the tube station and facing one of the most important axis

avenues of Sao Paulo, I see a great potential for a transport

modal point in the ground-floor, work, stores and residence.

The total area is around 2450 m2 and we can build 4 times

this value that is 9800 m2 and the occupation tax is 80%,

1960m2. The proposal has around 9730 m2 constructed

and 8502m2 of residential apartments.

The apartments are moulded in 1.10 meters

and they are in three types with once, two and

three bedrooms. This flexibility is important

to adapt the buildings to each area that there

can be implemented. The wetted areas are

in the same plumb line. As a pre moulded

construction this choice makes the maintenance

and assemblage easier.

The balconies are light steel structures hanged

on the walls and cable stayed on the truss.

The thermal problems related to the wood were

also taken in account. Using isolation materials

and the concrete can also help to regulate the

temperature creating of passive rooms.

The structural solution adopted is able to allow

the use of the modules in different situations

around the city with more or less density

needed and different occupation taxes. LOCATION IN SAO PAULO CENTRE

Our group, together with the rest of the other students of the

studio Architecture, Environments and Digital Cultures had to

prepare a piece for the Sound Week Exposition. The idea was

to offer an interactive experience to the visitor. We used as

material 5mm MDF panels part cut in CNC routers and circular

saw.

We created a prototype inspired in Kircher Trumpets which

would play with distance of the surface, volume of air, outside

and inside sounds crossing the corridor. We used Rhinoceros

and Grasshoper software in combination with a laser cut

machine to execute study models.

The sketches were free and audacious. But the evolution of

the project leading to the material limitations and assemblage

difficulties culminated in a simplification. We turned the drawing

plan and studied the structure. The corridor had 3 points of

supporting and was made by seventeen “arches” closed by

plan quads with a maximum 4 mm of deformation.

The rigidity of the timber with the flexibility of the fabric creates a

sturdy structure and changing at the same time.

The selected triangle is equilateral proved more suitable for our

purpose as regards the aesthetics and functionality. From there,

we determine the dimensions: did about four thousand triangles

of MDF with 7cm x 7cm hand cut, sanded and glued with a 3mm

space between each, in a fabric with 4m x 2m and elasticity both

vertically and horizontally.

The proposal was to design a naval technical school in a periphery

area close to the Guarapiranga water reserve. The area was

already passing through an urban renew. A new park was installed

in the lakeside. The neighbourhood was created in a property

invasion. Due to this process, the poor region has confusing urban

fabric and lack of infrastructure. The development of a little harbour

would allow water transportation of the citizens, waste and tourists.

Also a technical school could also form citizens and produce their

boats and ferries. An investiment like this corroborates in the same

level for cultural events, concerts and extra classes activities as

sports, arts and recreation.
