WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PORTLAND STATE VIKINGS FOOTBALL Portland State University, located in Portland, OR, is the second-largest school in the state of Oregon with 28,407 students. It was founded in 1946 as Vanport College - a two-year institution. Athletically, Portland State began as a junior college in 1946-47, but competed in the Oregon Collegiate Conference at the NAIA level from 1950 to 1964, winning three OCC football titles (1962, 1963, 1964). PSU became a four-year institution in 1955. Portland State joined the NCAA in 1965 and competed at the College Division level (the forerunner of NCAA II). PSU was an NCAA 1-AA member from 1978-80, then moved back to Division II in 1981, where it competed through the 1995 season. The Vikings were members of the Western Football Conference from 1982 to 1992, winning six conference championships. PSU made eight NCAA II playoff appearances from 1987 to 1995. In 1996, Portland State moved to the Big Sky Conference and up to the NCAA 1-AA (now FCS) level. The Vikings made their first playoff appearance at their current level in 2000. In 2015, Portland State had its best season ever at the Division I level, compiling a 9-3 record and reaching the NCAA playoffs. Portland State’s football program has produced such legendary figures as Coach Mouse Davis, quarterbacks Neil Lomax and June Jones, Tom Oberg (the first Viking to play in the NFL), Coach Pokey Allen (who led the Vikings to two NCAA II National Championship appearances), and some 30 players who have appeared in the NFL. In 2014, three former Vikings reached NFL Championship games: Julius Thomas with Denver, DeShawn Shead with Seattle and Jordan Senn with Caro-lina. Thomas and Shead went on to meet in Super Bowl XLVIII with their respec-tive teams and Shead became a Super Bowl Champion - just the third former PSU Viking to do so (Clint Didier, Ted Popson). Shead made a return appearance to the Super Bowl in 2015, while Thomas was selected to his second Pro Bowl in as many years. He later signed a free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, making him the highest paid tight end in the NFL. Portland State football plays at Hillsboro Stadium, west of downtown, a 7,200-seat stadium.

72019-20 Portland State Vikings Basketball

Portland State Football has rounded out its 2020 signing class on National Signing Day, adding a total of 19 student-athletes to the program. PSU signed seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period and added 12 more on Wednesday. The Vikings brought in a total of 11 high schoolers and eight transfers to their roster for 2020. In addition to that, Viking Coach Bruce Barnum makes the point that national letter of intent signing has become much more of a year-round process. “Signing NLIs continues through April, whether it is high school, junior college or transfers,” he said. “And now the NCAA transfer portal changes how recruiting gets done. “We will still be on the prowl for more talent that is available out there,” said Barnum. As it is, Portland State addressed the key areas of need already – specifically, offensive and defensive line, cornerback and bolstering the running back spot. The Vikings have added nine on offense, nine on defense and one on special teams. “Our staff did a tremendous job of putting the time in to recruit and sign an excellent group of football players,” Barnum said. PSU had 16 seniors with expiring eligibility in 2019, including two defensive tackles. Among the transfers are defensive tackles VJ Malo (Golden West College) and Holden Williams (Bakersfield College), who have impressive junior college resumes. They signed early and are already on campus. “VJ and William will play right away and will have the advantage of being here for spring foot-ball,” said Barnum. The defensive line also adds a pair of freshmen

with strong resumes in defensive end Zane Maningo and defensive tackle Martin Salazar. “We need pass rushers and Zane will fill that void for us in the future. Martin has the best hips, pop and first step of any kid that I have seen in a long time,” Barnum said. Offensive line teammates Jernias Tafia and D’Angalo Titialii, two-time state champions from Eastside Catholic High School in Washington, signed early with the Viking program. The tandem of big men should be the future on the offensive line for the Vikings. “Those two guys are winners and they have a sense of urgency to win,” said Barnum. “They are really talented guys who were heavily recruited.” In today’s signings, the Vikings added Hayden Engel from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, and Carlton Lorenz, a graduate transfer from Vander-bilt. “Hayden was a much sought-after offensive lineman, and he chose us over other FBS and FCS schools. Carlton graduated at Vanderbilt and helps fill a need here. He comes in with a year left for us and brings experience and toughness to that group,” said Barnum. “With these guys and our defensive transfers, I feel like we really solidified our defense and offense up front.” At running back, the Vikings signed local talent Jalynnee McGee of Skyview High School in Vancou-ver early. He joins the Viking backfield after a brilliant senior season as the Greater St. Helens League Offensive Player of the Year. “I feel like we got the top running back in the state of Washington with Jalynnee,” said Barnum.

Jarmar Julien comes to the Vikings from San Francisco City College. Barnum noted he wanted a bigger back to join his backfield group. At 230 pounds, Julien is that man, and only a sophomore eligibility-wise. “Jarmar is a guy that is going to be fun to watch,” Barnum said. “We need him to be a dude for us, and at his size, I think he can be.” The Vikings have added three defensive backs, junior college transfer Bobby Blandino, also just a sophomore, and freshmen Daluan Bright and Tyreese Shakir. Barnum loves the confidence that Blandino brings to the program, and the athleticism of Bright and Shakir. “Day-Day (Bright) has an incredible skill set and we got him because he wasn’t one of the bigger athletes out there,” Barnum said. “Tyreese Shakir is simply a fast cover corner. He has great speed.” Local product Parker McKenna has also signed with the Vikings. A linebacker out of Beaverton High School, McKenna was a first team All-League and All-State selection. Another linebacker signee, Tevita Tuitavake from College of San Mateo, is expected to have an immediate impact as he will compete to play at middle linebacker. Portland State lost senior All-American tight end Charlie Taumoepeau, as he vies to make it in the NFL. One of the players tapped to help fill his shoes is Anthony Rodriguez, from Riverside CC. “We think he can step right in to our tight end rotation,” said Barnum. Another receiver joining the Vikings was early signee Nate Bennett, a tall, athletic wide receiver from Grace Brethren High School in California. “The tenacity that Nate brings to that position as well as his height and great hands will allow him to have a great future in our program,” Barnum said. “His love for the game means he should have an early impact at a position where we already have a talented group.” Deion Malone was also an early signee from Los Angeles Southwest College and joins the wide receiver group. His biggest impact though may be as a return specialist. Malone had two kick returns for touchdown and 39.8 yard return average in 2019 at LA SW. “Deion is an electric returner and a guy who can play slot receiver. He will really add to our return game,” said Barnum. Also joining the special teams group is fresh-man long snapper Ryan Alvidrez. “Alvidrez should be the heir apparent to Shack (senior long snapper Riley Shackelford),” Barnum said. “He is one of the top snappers in the country, we brought him in to take over after Shack gradu-ates.”

2020 VIKINGS FOOTBALL

2019-20 Portland State Vikings Basketball

For the second year in a row, Portland State Football will make an early turn of the calendar to spring. The Vikings open spring practice on Feb. 19 at Stott Community Field. PSU returns 48 letterwinners to the 2020 roster. Ten others gained game experience in 2019, but were able to maintain their redshirt sta-tus. The Vikings have six starters back on offense, five on defense, as well as their kicker and punter. In addition, two starters on defense and one on offense who missed most of last season due to injury also return. So, the Vikings may have its most experienced roster in the past four seasons taking the field. Including redshirts, the Vikings should have approximately 73 players available to compete in the spring. From its recent signing class of 19, two members will also be on campus to compete in the spring. Head Coach Bruce Barnum begins his sixth season at the helm. The Vikings were 5-7 in 2019, 3-5 in the Big Sky Conference. PSU averaged 34.7 points and 453.8 yards of total offense while allowing 30.0 points and 408.6 yards on defense. The Vikings will practice 15 times over four weeks, culminating in the Spring Game on Mar. 14 at Stott Community Field.

OFFENSE Senior quarterback Davis Alexander (5-11, 195), who has started 25 career games for the Vikings, will lead an offense loaded with talented receivers. PSU led the nation in time of possession last season, as Alexander’s superb pass-run skills led him to 3,445 yards of total offense and 30 total touchdowns for the Vikings. As effective as he has been, Alexander will look to improve his 57% completion mark in 2020. There is a wealth of depth at quarterback behind Alexander. Junior Jalani Eason (5-11, 185) is back after taking a redshirt season due to a nagging ankle injury. He has played in 20 career games with six starts. Eason, a bit more of a run-oriented signal caller than Alexander, has 1,875 yards of total offense and 18 total touch-downs in his career. Then come redshirt freshman Dante Chachere (6-3, 170), sophomore Jalen Chatman (6-0, 185) and junior Nathan West (6-3, 220), all of whom saw brief action in 2019. Redshirt fresh-man DeMontre Thomas (6-1, 210) also returns after being scout team quarterback last season. Alexander has a big arm and plenty of weapons from which to choose. His top four wide receivers return as juniors Beau Kelly (5-9, 165), Mataio Talalemotu (6-1, 180) and Davis Koetter (6-2, 195), and senior Emmanuel Daigbe (6-1, 210) combined for 140 receptions, 2,178 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2019. Experienced receivers George McCorley (6-2, 200) and Easton Trakel (5-9, 180) and redshirt freshmen Marshaun Tucker (6-2, 170) and Zach Folsom (5-10, 170) give the Vikings great depth

on the outside. Kick return specialist Deion Malone (5-7, 150), a junior college signee from Los Angeles Southwest College, should also offer depth at slot receiver when he arrives in the fall. One area the Vikings need to shore up will be tight end. PSU lost All-American Charlie Taumoepeau, who is vieing to play in the NFL. The Vikings have plenty of candidates to play and will benefit from the return of AJ Ruffin (6-5, 250), who was a redshirt last year. As a sophomore backup in 2018, he had 15 receptions for 177 yards. Other returning letterwinners who will need to expand their contributions are junior Malik Thirdgill (6-4, 250), senior Daniel Giannosa (6-10, 255) and sophomore John Schulte (6-5, 230). Ju-nior college signee Anthony Rodriguez (6-3, 235), who arrives in the fall, and redshirt freshman Elias Spence (6-4, 220) are wildcards in the mix. At running back, young players Jobadiah Malary (5-11, 215, 12-93-1 in one game) and JoJo Siofele (5-10, 205, 2-6-0 in one game) will step into primary roles along with returning senior Ma-lik Walker (6-0, 195, 66-284-4) and junior Bishop Mitchell (5-9, 180), who returns from an injury

season. A pair of signees may also have something to say about playing time when they arrive in the fall. Jarmar Julien, a sophomore from San Fran-cisco City College, gives the Vikings the big back (5-11, 230) that Coach Barnum has been looking for. Jalynnee McGee (5-10, 195), a freshman from Skyview High School in Vancouver, was the Great-er St. Helens League Offensive Player of the Year. Redshirt Ahmir McGee (5-11, 185) gives Portland State a stable of seven backs heading into the season. The Vikings will have veterans up front in returning senior starters Babak Ghadaksaz (6-2, 290), Carlos Barraza (6-3, 300) and sophomore Shiloh Ta’ase (6-3, 290), as well as experienced veterans in juniors Tyson Pauling (6-5, 310) and Brady Brick (6-5, 290), and seniors John Krahn (6-10, 410) and Tommy Laverde (6-5, 290). Redshirt freshman Richard Estrella (6-4, 315) will also compete for a starting role. Barazza and Ta’ase finished the 2019 season as the starting tackles, bracketing the offensive line. Ghadaksaz spent the year at guard, but is

Portland State’s top four wide receivers all return. Beau Kelly (13), Emmanuel Daigbe (80), Mataio Talalemotu (8) and Davis Koetter (7) combined for 140 receptions, 2,178 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2019.

likely to move over to center to replace the grad-uated Garrett Stauffer. Estrella started the season finale at right guard and played well. Brick and Pauling also have starts in their careers at guard, while Krahn and Laverde are experienced players as well. The Vikings can add redshirt Alex Rockwell (6-3, 270) to the depth on the line, while graduate transfer Carlton Lorenz (6-4, 290) from Vanderbilt should compete to start as well when he arrives later this year. One thing is certain on the line: the Viking coaching staff will experiment throughout the spring moving players to different spots from practice to practice to see which combination and locations work the best.

DEFENSE All-American safety Anthony Adams (6-0, 185) is the feature player on a Viking defense that returns five starters. In addition, the Vikings benefit from the return of starters at safety, Ryan Lesch, and defensive end, Noah Yunker, who missed most of last year due to injury, effectively giving them seven starters back. Yunker (6-4, 255, 9 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, 1.5 SKs in four games) and Jake Porter (6-4, 250, 35 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, 4.5 SKs, 3 PBUs, FR), fellow Oregonians, are experienced defensive ends with 30 career starts between them. They will be pushed to improve the Vikings’ pass rush in 2020. Sophomore James Thomas (6-1, 245, 10 tackles, 2.5 TFLs, 1 SK) will push those two for playing time, as will redshirt freshman Kennedy Freeman (6-2, 240). Senior Cody Brown (6-3, 250) and redshirt sophomore Jayson Pace (6-1, 240) will be counted on to contribute at defensive end as well. PSU will miss defensive tackles Kenton Bart-lett and Anthony Del Toro, who have graduated. Senior defensive tackle Semise Kofe (6-2, 315, 30 tackles, 7.5 TFLs, 2.5 SKs) is the most experienced returner and should lead up front with 32 career games and 12 career starts.

Junior Boogie Davis (6-3, 255, 17 tackles, 3 TFLs) is the only other experienced player at the tackle spot. So the coaching staff has brought in transfer defensive tackles Holden Williams (6-0, 285, Bakersfield College) and VJ Malo (6-1, 270, Golden West College). Both will be on the field in the spring learning the Vikings’ flex defense. Depending on their development, redshirt freshman Ethan Tela-Porter (6-2, 285) and true freshman Martin Salazar (5-10, 275) may find time on the field at tackle as well. Linebackers Nicolas Ah Sam (6-1, 250), Dylan Hanley (6-2, 225) and David Joseph (6-1, 200), who ranked 3-4-5 in tackles for the Vikings are also back. Hanley (45 tackles, 2.5 TFLs), a senior, sophomore Zack Mandera (6-1, 220, 27 tackles, FR) and junior Robert Holt (6-2, 215, 29 tackles, 2 TFLs, INT) all had starts at middle linebacker in 2019. In spring ball, Hanley is slated to work out at buck linebacker, while Holt will be at the whip and Mandera will stay in the middle. They should all battle for significant playing time in 2020. Defensive coordinator Payam Saadat will have a lot of options at linebacker as he has added to the mix junior college transfer Tevita Tuitavake (6-0, 215), who will arrive in the fall. The whip linebacker spot returns a pair of experienced players. Ah Sam (36 tackles, 7 TFLs), a senior who has 16 career starts, will likely hold down the spot again. However, junior Moses Finau (6-1, 240, 17 tackles, 1.5 TFLs) earned two starts at the whip in 2019. He is likely to move to the Buck and compete with Hanley and redshirt freshman Justice Pagan (6-2, 220) for playing time. Redshirt sophomore Monquel Glasow (6-2, 235) adds depth at linebacker as well. Senior Steffen Jacobsen (6-2, 215), a talented player who has managed only 16 career games due to a variety of injuries, will get a look at middle linebacker once again. He was slated to compete to start there last season before injuries limited him to two games late in the season. Sophomore Isaiah Henry (5-11, 205) is another

experienced player who will compete for time in the middle. The rover back position lost third-leading tackler Romeo Gunt, who has graduated. But Joseph (39 tackles, 4.5 TFLS, FR), a sophomore, actually had the most starts at rover with seven. He should hold down that spot in 2020. Benton Hoge (5-10, 180), a sophomore, played almost exclusively on special teams in 2019 and should back up at rover. Adams, a junior, will provide leadership in the defensive backfield after a banner sophomore season. He led the nation in passes defensed in 2019 with five interceptions and a school-record 19 pass breakups. He also made 56 tackles to rank second on the team. Due to the Vikings inexperience at cornerback, Adams is expected to move over to boundary cornerback, a position he played in high school. As a result, Saadat will evaluate senior Arin Mannery (6-0, 180, 10 tackles, sophomore Greg Oliver (5-10, 165, 2 interceptions) and senior KJ Walker (6-0, 185) at the strong safety (Sam) position. Lesch (6-1, 200, 13 tackles, 1 INT in three games) would have been one of the Vikings’ key players in 2019 had he not gone down early with an injury. A senior, Lesch was able to take a redshirt season. His 14 games of experience, including 10 starts, includes 55 tackles and two interceptions. Along with Adams, their experience will be vital alongside an inexperienced corner-back group. Redshirt freshman Karsonne Winters (6-3, 195) will bring excellent size to the competition for playing time at free safety along with Ty Apa-na-Purcell (5-9, 185). Perhaps the most interesting position battle will be at cornerback (Adams notwithstanding) as no less than six redshirt freshmen vie for a starting role. Emonte’ Scott (6-3, 185) got a brief look at corner in 2019, and he is joined by Davion Gaines (6-0, 170), Semaj Bolin (5-10, 170), Michael Jack-son (6-2, 185), Darius Harrison (5-11, 185) and Travis West (5-6, 155) among that redshirt group. Sophomore transfer Bobby Blandino (5-11, 185, Saddleback JC) will join the competition for playing time in the fall.

SPECIAL TEAMS Portland State can boast two of the best spe-cial teams performers in the Big Sky Conference. Junior kicker Cody Williams (5-10, 190) booted 15 field goals last season and holds three PSU records, including longest field goal (56 yards) and consecutive extra points (82). Senior punter Seth Vernon (6-5, 230) averaged 43.2 yards per punt last season, ranking 12th in the nation. The Vikings look forward to having long snapper Riley Shackelford (6-1, 225) back after a redshirt season due to a knee injury. A senior, Shackelford had started 27 straight games prior to his injury in 2018. PSU has added to its return game as well. JC transfer Deion Malone (5-7, 155). He averaged Cody Williams

39.8 yards per return, scoring two touchdowns last season. In addition, wide receiver Emmanuel Daigbe was named first team All-Big Sky Conference at the special teams position with 11 tackles, a fum-ble recovery and a 19.5 yard kick return average.

A FULL-TIME MOVE TO HILLS-BORO Portland State Football moved to Hillsboro Stadium in 2019 as its full-time home venue. The Vikings joined the Viking softball and soccer programs, which already use the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex in Hillsboro, as a full-time home. The move to Hillsboro for football was made due to increasing challenges for home scheduling at Providence Park. Portland State had used Prov-idence Park as its home venue since the 1960s. However, conflicts with Portland Timbers soccer in recent seasons had forced the Vikings to occasion-ally have to move out of the stadium for home games. In 2018, PSU played four of five home games at Hillsboro due to schedule conflicts. The logistics and cost of moving back and forth between venues, and occasionally not knowing if Providence Park would be available (due to potential MLS post-season games), helped necessitate the move. Having Hillsboro as a consistent home should be more beneficial to the program, fans and staff, as well as be financially more prudent. Portland State played the entire 2000 and 2010 seasons at Hillsboro due to construction at Providence Park. In 2018, the Vikings played four of five home games at Hillsboro, and has had

some one-off games in recent years.

THE 2020 SCHEDULE The Vikings will host five FCS opponents at Hillsboro Stadium and play six games on the road in 2020. The schedule will be as challenging as ever as PSU will play two Pac-12 teams to open the season. It marks the first time since 2014 that Portland State has played two Pac-12 members in the same season. The Vikings will be on the road to play Arizona for the first time in program history on Sept. 5. After a bye week, Portland State goes down Interstate 5 to face Oregon State. It will be the first meeting between the Vikings and Beavers since 2017. In that game, PSU took OSU to the final seconds before losing, 35-32. The Beavers have taken five all-time meetings between the programs. On Sept. 26, Portland State will have its home opener against Montana State. The Bobcats were an FCS semifinalist in 2019, finishing with an 11-4 record. The teams last met in 2018, a 43-23 MSU victory. Montana State leads the Big Sky Conference series, 14-7. The Vikings are on the road the following two weeks, playing at Southern Utah (Oct. 3) and Idaho (Oct. 10). Portland State took home wins against both programs in 2019, beating the Thunderbirds, 52-31, and the Vandals, 24-0. PSU leads the all-time series with Southern Utah, 10-4, and trails the series with Idaho, 12-2. Portland State remains at home for the rest of October, playing three straight at Hillsboro Stadium. The last time the Vikings had three in a row at home was the final two games of the 2015 season, followed by an FCS playoff game with Northern Iowa. On Oct. 17, PSU hosts Idaho State. The Ben-gals beat the Vikings 51-24 last year in Pocatello. ISU leads the all-time series, 26-18-1, and the Big Sky series is tied 12-12. The second FCS playoff team from 2019 comes to town on Oct. 24 when Portland State hosts North Dakota. No longer a member of

the Big Sky Conference, PSU and UND will be meeting in a non-conference game. The last matchup was a 17-10 Fighting Hawks’ win in Grand Forks in 2018. Portland State will meet Cal Poly for the first time since 2017 when they clash in a Hallowe’en game. The Mustangs won the last meeting, 35-28 in San Luis Obispo, and lead the all-time series, 13-11. November brings as challenging a schedule as ever when Portland State meets the 2019 Big Sky Conference co-champions on consecutive weeks on the road. PSU goes to Weber State on Nov. 7. The Wildcats were also FCS semifinalists, going 11-4 in 2019, 7-1 in the Big Sky. The teams will be meeting for the first time since 2017. Sacramento State will host Portland State on Nov. 14. The Hornets were surprise co-champions in 2019, going 9-4 overall, 7-1 in the Big Sky. PSU won the last meeting between the schools in 2018, 41-14, in Sacramento. The Vikings lead the all-time series, 23-12. Portland State hosts the regular season finale on Friday night, Nov. 20, against Eastern Washington. The Eagles won a shootout with the Vikings, 53-46, last fall in Cheney. The Eagles hold a slight edge in the series, 21-20-1. SCHEDULE NOTES• This will be the 74th season of Portland State football (1947) and 25th season as a member of the Big Sky Conference.• Portland State will be playing two FBS programs in a season for the 11th time in its history and the seventh year in a row. The Vikings will play two Pac-12 schools in the same season for the fourth time in history. PSU has never played Arizona, and will face Oregon State for the sixth time. PSU is 4-38 all-time against FBS programs. The Vikings are 1-17 against the Pac-12. The lone win was a 24-17 victory at Washington State in 2015.• Year in and year out Portland State football has one of the most challenging Football Champi-onship Subdivision schedules in the country, and 2020 will be no different. In addition to playing FBS programs Arizona and Oregon State, the Vikings will play four 2019 FCS playoff teams (Montana State, North Dakota, Weber State and Sacramento State). Weber State and Sacramento State were co-Big Sky Champions. Montana State and Weber State each reached the FCS semifi-nals. Weber State (3rd), Montana State (4th) and Sacramento State (9th) all finished in the top 10 in the final FCS poll.• PSU faces only four teams in 2020 that were on the schedule in 2019 (Southern Utah, Idaho, Idaho State and Eastern Washington).• Portland State will play three straight regular

season home games in a season for the first time since the first three games of the 2003 season.• Portland State will not play a lower division pro-gram in 2020. The Vikings are now 18-0 in games against lower division opponents since moving to Division I in 1996.• In the Big Sky Conference’s unusual 13-team format in 2020, Portland State faces just eight of the other 12 members. PSU will miss Big Sky schools Montana, UC Davis, Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado on its schedule in 2020. BIG MEN ON CAMPUS Portland State can boast two of the biggest men on campus and in college football. Senior offensive lineman John Krahn is 6-10, 410 pounds. Would that make him the biggest Viking ever? Yes, it would. The biggest player in college football? Without scanning hundreds of college football rosters, we will say... possibly, probably. Perhaps just as interesting as Krahn’s height and weight is his arm length. Krahn was measured at 36.5 inches arm length in the spring - a full three inches longer than any other player on the team. That reach should be handy while blocking on the offensive line. Senior Daniel Giannosa who has alternated between tight end and offensive line is nearly as big - at least in height. Giannosa came to PSU as a 6-8, 240-pound freshman. He now stands 6-10 and his weight has gone as high as 280 pounds. However, after a season on the Viking basketball team he is back at 260. Giannosa expects to move back to tight end for his senior season.

OTHER TIDBITS OF VIKING TRIVIA • Portland State has 29 players on the roster from

the state of Oregon, plus three others from just across the river and the Vancouver, WA area.

• Players who originally walked on but have earned scholarships include: SR WR Easton Trakel, FR RB Jobadiah Malary.

• SR WR Emmanuel Daigbe was born in Liberia. Originally he wrestled in college at Highline and Green River CCs.

• JR S Anthony Adams is the brother of former Vikings WR Darnell Adams. Anthony is a key player on the Viking defense this season. Darnell finished his career in 2017 (99 receptions, 1,568 yards, 12 touchdowns).

• SR DE Cody Brown is the brother of former Vikings OL Josh Brown. Both prepped at Sunset (Beaverton, OR) HS.

• JR WR Mataio Talalemotu is the son of Ina Talalemotu, who played in 1987-88 on Portland State’s two NCAA II National finalist teams. He is also the cousin of former Viking DL Savali Talalemotu.

• FR QB Dante Chachere’s brother, Andre, is a

member of the Arizona Cardinals.• JR DE Jake Porter’s father, Jason, was a four-

year letterwinner in baseball at Portland State (1991-94).

• Offensive Coordinator Matt Leunen (OL/TE, 2005-09) is a PSU alum who played for the Vikings.

• Portland State had a pair of former players meet in the Super Bowl for the first time in history in February 2014. TE Julius Thomas (‘10, Denver) and DB DeShawn Shead (‘11, Seattle) both played in Super Bowl XLVIII. Shead returned to the Super Bowl in 2015 with the Seahawks. He joins Clint Didier and Ted Popson as former Vikings with Super Bowl rings. Thomas was named a Pro Bowl tight end in 2013 and 2014. In the 2014 off-season, he signed the richest tight end contract in the NFL to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Thomas retired in the 2018 off-season after a seven-year career that included 71 games, 226 receptions, 2,406 yards and 36 touchdowns. Shead, a starting corner with the Seahawks in 2016, missed 2017 due to an ACL injury, then signed and played with Detroit in 2018.

• LB Patrick Onwuasor stars for the Baltimore Ravens while LS Kameron Canaday is a starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

GET ON THE BUS: THE AMERICANA TOUR Portland State Football Coach Bruce Barnum is renowned for taking his team on the bus to as many road games as possible. He calls it “The Americana Tour.” It has made for some long bus rides, but Barnum often lets his team out to see the sights. Barnum also feels it promotes team unity (and saves a few dollars in the budget). In the past four years, PSU has logged 16,282 bus miles with a “program record” of 4,906 in 2016.• Coach Barnum led his first “Americana Tour” in

2015, which included bus rides to Pullman, WA, Pocatello, ID, San Luis Obispo, CA, and Cheney, WA. In all, the Vikings logged 4,394 bus miles and approximately 80 hours round trip to those four destinations (PSU also flew on two road trips). The Americana Tour included such things as dozens of on-bus movies, a stop to buy a lottery ticket on the way home from beating Washington State, a practice on Boise State’s blue turf, a sight-seeing trip to Alcatraz (in which equipment manager Mike Haluska was left on the island… but soon retrieved), and a midnight McDonald’s run at a lonely truck stop in eastern Oregon. In addition to the economy of the bus trips, Barnum contends the time together draws the Viking team closer.

• The 2016 Americana Tour included round trips to San Jose, Seattle and Sacramento (twice). There was also a return bus ride from Ogden, UT and a shorter trip from Las Vegas to Cedar City... the trip to San Jose was a total of 1,340

miles. It included a stop off at Oregon Wildlife Safari and the obligatory In-and-Out Burger visitation in Medford... on the trip to Southern Utah, PSU flew into Las Vegas, took in the Criss Angel Show at the Luxor Hotel and made an-other midnight In-and-Out run... while traveling to Weber State, PSU visited Temple Square and the Hogle Zoo... after a pair round trips to Sacramento (UC Davis and Sacramento State), PSU had accumulated 4,906 bus miles for the season.

• The 2017 season was limited to just three bus trips: Oregon State, Idaho State and Eastern Washington. There was also a bus portion from San Jose, CA to Cal Poly. And, Portland State’s trip to Corvallis was a mere 168 miles round trip. The Americana Tour bus trip to Pocatello, ID was 660 miles one way, 1,320 miles round trip. The Vikings made a stop in Pendleton and toured the Pendleton Rodeo Museum and Hall of Fame, as well as a stop along the Snake River... the Vikings had bus travel from San Jose Airport to San Luis Obispo for the game at Cal Poly. It was 376 miles round trip and included a stop over on the Monterey Peninsula on the way down. No golf was played... the final week’s bus trip from PSU to Eastern Washington was 339 miles one way, 678 round trip. That made the Vikings’ Americana Tour for 2017 a total of 2,542 miles.

• In 2018 Portland State made bus trips to five different states. They included Nevada (1,156 miles round trip), Oregon (218 miles), Idaho (718 miles), Montana (1,098 miles) and Sacra-mento State (1,158 miles). That made for a total of 4,348 bus miles.

• The 2019 Americana Tour started early as the Vikings bussed to Camp Rilea Armed Forces Train-ing Center in Warrenton, OR (176 miles round trip) for the first three days of preseason practice. The Vikings stayed in the barracks, ate at the mess hall and practice on a makeshift field on the Helipad. Numerous team bonding exercises took place, including bowling night, a beach bonfire and three hours of liberty in Seaside, OR... only three bus trips are on the docket for 2019. They include Boise State (864 miles round trip), Idaho State (1,326 miles) and Eastern Washington (678 miles)... on the trip to Boise State, the Vikings pulled off the freeway for a couple of hours in Pendleton to enjoy the world famous Pendleton Roundup rodeo... FR OL Shiloh Ta’ase thrilled his teammates on the way to Eastern Washington when the team stopped for lunch in Kennewick. On a dare, Ta’ase leaped into the Columbia River in the midst of chilly 33-degree temperatures... Total bus miles for 2019 were 3,044.

• Overall, Portland State improved its total offense by 60 yards and seven points per game over 2018. The defense allowed 6.2 fewer points and 11.2 fewer yards per game.

ADAMS, TAUMOEPEAU EARN ALL-AMERICAN HONORS You can’t do much better than being at the top of the list. Portland State sophomore safety Anthony Adams learned that as he was named a consensus first team All-American. Adams was at the top of the nation’s list for passes defended this season with 24 (19 pass breakups and five interceptions). As a result, he was named first team FCS All-American by Associated Press, STATS Inc. and the Walter Camp Foundation. He became PSU’s first first-team All-American since 2015 when another Viking safety, Patrick Onwuasor (now of the Baltimore Ravens), also won the honor. Portland State senior tight end Charlie Taumoepeau added to his list of accolades as well by making Associated Press, STATS and AP second team All-American. Adams placed 12th in the balloting for the Buck Buchanan Award, honoring the top defensive player in the nation at the FCS level. He was a first team All-Big Sky Conference choice and also was selected to the Hero Sports FCS Sophomore All-American team. As mentioned, Adams, a 6-foot, 185-pound sophomore from Newberg, led the nation in passes. His five interceptions and 19 pass breakups led the Big Sky Conference in each category. Adams ranked 13th in the nation in interceptions. He also had 56 tackles, two tackles for loss and blocked a kick on special teams. Adams broke the Portland State school record for pass breakups in a season (previously 15). Adams now has 26 PBUs in his two seasons on the Park Blocks and already ranks sixth for a career. He is on pace to break the school career record (33). Overall, he has 104 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, six interceptions, 26 pass breakups and a fumble recovery in 23 career games. Taumoepeau, one of the most prolific tight ends in Portland State history, earned All-America honors for the second year in a row. Last season, he was a consensus second teamer, and has already made his second All-America team in 2019 after Hero Sports honored him on Monday. Taumoepeau, from Federal Way, WA, went into the year picked as a preseason All-American by nu-merous media outlets and he lived up to the billing. The 6-3, 245-pound Taumopeau earned first team All-Big Sky Conference last month for the second season in a row. The Vikings’ top receiver during his career, Taumoepeau caught 36 passes for 474 yards and two touchdowns in 2019 despite missing two games. final balloting by a national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries. Adams, a 6-foot, 185-pound sophomore from Newberg High School, led the nation in passes defended this season with a total of 24. He made five in-terceptions and broke up 19 passes, both of which led the Big Sky Conference. Adams ranked 13th in the nation in interceptions. For the season, Adams also had 56 tackles, two tackles for loss and blocked a kick on special teams. He broke the Portland State school record for pass breakups in a season (previously 15). He is one of three Big Sky players on the Buck Buchanan list. Adams now has 26 PBUs in his two seasons on the Park Blocks and al-ready ranks sixth for a career. He is on pace to break the school career record (33). Overall, he has 104 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, six interceptions, 26 pass breakups and a fumble recovery in 23 career games. Among Portland State’s previous Buck Buchanan Award finalists were: Adam Hayward (2006, fourth in the balloting), Andy Schantz (2008, 10th) and Patrick Onwuasor (2015, 2nd).

TAUMOEPEAU, ADAMS, DAIGBE HIGHLIGHT ALL-BIG SKY CONFERENCE TEAM Tight end Charlie Taumoepeau, safety Anthony Adams and wide receiver Emmanuel Daigbe all highlight Portland State Football’s All-Big Sky Confer-ence selections. Taumoepeau became a two-time first team All-Big Sky choice. Adams earned first team All-Big Sky after leading the league and the nation in passes defended. And Daigbe was selected as first team in the Special Teams category, as well as a third team All-Big Sky wide receiver. All-Conference teams were voted on by league head coaches. Taumoepeau, a 6-3, 245-pound senior from Federal Way, WA, earned first team All-Big Sky Conference for the second year in a row after being second team as a sophomore. The Vikings’ top receiver during his career, he was a second team All-American last year and preseason All-American in 2019. Tau-moepeau caught 36 passes for 474 yards and two touchdowns this season despite missing two games. He wrapped up a career that included 117 catches, 1,876 yards and 11 TDs. Adams, a 6-foot, 185-pound sophomore from Newberg, led the nation in passes defended this season with a total of 24. He made five interceptions and broke up 19 passes, both of which led the Big Sky Conference. Adams ranked 13th in the nation in interceptions. He also had 56 tackles, two tackles for loss and blocked a kick on special teams. Adams broke the Portland State school record for pass breakups in a season (previously 15). He is one of 26 players from around the country listed on the ballot for the Buck Buchanan Award, for the nation’s top defensive player. Daigbe, a 6-1, 210-pound wide receiver from Kent, WA, made his mark all over the field for the Vikings in earning two All-Big Sky awards. As a wide receiver, he led the Vikings with 40 receptions for 651 yards and seven touch-downs. Daigbe added 19 rushing plays for 87 yards and a touchdown. On special teams, Daigbe made 11 tackles and one fumble recovery this season, and had a 19.5 yard kick return average. Viking kicker Cody Williams was given third team All-Big Sky Conference honors for the second season in a row. Williams, a native of Murrieta, CA, made 15-22 field goals and all 45 extra points he attempted. The sophomore set two new school records and tied a third this season. Williams’ 56-yard field goal at Northern Colorado broke the PSU record of 55 yards set in 1975 by Pat Moore. His five field goals at Northern Arizona tied for the most made in a game. And, with 82 consecutive extra points made in his career, he has established a new record (previous, 77 in a row). Given an opportunity for a sixth year by the NCAA, senior center Garrett Stauffer made the most of it. He was named third team All-Big Sky Conference this season. The 6-3, 290-pounder from Sam Barlow (OR) High School had missed two full seasons in his career due to injuries, but he started every game at center in each of the last two years and the last 27 games he was available to play, with the exception of one. Stauffer missed the Sept. 28 game at Idaho State after having an appendectomy. However, he returned just 10 days later to start in a win against Southern Utah. Three Viking seniors on the defensive line earned honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference. They include: defensive tackle Anthony Del Toro (Grants

Pass, OR; 33 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks); defensive tackle Kenton Bartlett (Boise, ID; 31 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one pass break-up, one blocked kick); and defensive end Shawn Richard (Miami, FL; 28 tackles, 5.5 sacks, one forced fumble). Offensive lineman Daniel Giannosa was given the Big Sky Conference Community Service Award by the league. Giannosa, who just completed his junior season, has played in 30 games in his career including at tight end, offensive line and long snapper. He started two games at right tackle this season. Giannosa is a two-Academic All-Big Sky Conference honoree as well. In its inaugural year, the Big Sky Community Service Award recogniz-es football student-athletes who have dedicated their time to helping others and have gone above and beyond in making an impact on their campus and community. Award winners were nominated by their respective head coaches. Each team in the Big Sky has a student-athlete represented on the Community Service team.

EIGHTEEN VIKINGS EARN ACADEMIC ALL-BIG SKY Portland State had 18 players named to the Academic All-Big Sky Con-ference team in 2019. It was the second-most in program history. Student athletes maintained a GPA of 3.20 or higher and competed in at least half of the games.

SURGING SIRGEO SR RB Sirgeo Hoffman came on strong in 2019, but ended up missing two games with knee ailments. For the season, he led the team with 143 rushes for 769 yards and eight touchdowns.• He had the most rushing yards by a Viking since Alex Kuresa had 838 in

2016.• Hoffman rushed 28 times for a career-high 221 yards and two touchdowns

at Northern Colorado. He followed that up with 140 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries at Northern Arizona.

• Hoffman ranked seventh in the Big Sky Conference in rushing (76.9 yards per game).

• Remarkably, PSU has 33 games of individuals rushing for 200 yards in its history. Hoffman’s total of 221 ranks 19th-best all-time (record 393, Ryan Fuqua, 2001).

• Hoffman had 24 carries for 81 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Southern Utah... he had a 88 rushing yards and a score at Idaho State. Hoff-man would have had more but a 76-yard touchdown run was wiped off the board due to an illegal formation penalty.

THESE RECEIVERS HAVE GROWN UP An extraordinarily young receiving corps last season has grown up a lot in one year. • JR WR Emmanuel Daigbe leD the team lead with 40 receptions, 651 yards

and seven TDs... Daigbe had four catches for 109 yards and a touchdown at Eastern Washington... he caught two touchdown passes among his five receptions and 81 yards against UC Davis... he posted a career-high 114 yards at Northern Colorado, including the season’s longest play - a 76-yard TD reception... in his 23-game career, Daigbe has 63 catches for 1,024 yards and 11 TDs... Daigbe also had 11 tackles and a fumble receovery on special teams in 2019.

• SO WR Davis Koetter had 38 receptions for 626 yards and eight touchdowns. In his career, he has 42 catches and 10 have gone for scores. He averages 17.8 yards per catch... Koetter tied his career-high with seven receptions for 92 yards and two TDs at Eastern Washington... Koetter went for a career-high 108 receiving yards and a TD against Southern Utah and had a key fumble recovery on the punt coverage team.

• SO WR Mataio Talalemotu missed two games with a hamstring issue. But, he still had 31 receptions for 459 yards and four TDs... Talalemotu had five re-ceptions for 109 yards and a 40-yard touchdown against Montana... he led the Vikings with five receptions for 78 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown reception, at Boise State... for his career, he has 45 receptions for 771 yards, five TDs and three 100-yard games.

• SO WR Beau Kelly had 31 catches for 442 yards and three touchdowns. Kelly caught a career-long 61-yard touchdown at Idaho State... he also has a team-best 52-yard running play on a fly sweep and 73 return yards on seven punts.

CHARTING CHARLIE After missing two games with hamstring tightness, All-American tight end Charlie Taumoepeau eased back into competition. He finished the season ranked third on the team in receptions (36), but actually led in catches per game (3.6).• In 10 games played Taumoepeau had 36 receptions for 474 yards and two

touchdowns.• Taumoepeau put up his first 100-yard game of the season at Idaho State. He

had seven receptions for 104 yards... against Northern Arizona, he made five receptions for 127 yards, including a bruising 61-yard catch and run. It was his second 100-yard game of the season and the fifth of his career.

• For his career, Taumoepeau had 117 receptions for 1,876 yards (16.0) and 11 touchdowns. He was just outside the top 10 among receivers for a career in both categories, but is one of the most prolific tight ends in PSU histo-ry. He finished as a two-time first team All-Big Sky Conference choice and All-American.

• A consensus second team All-American last year, Taumoepeau was named preseason All-American by no less than four news outlets and is on the Wal-ter Payton Award Watch list for the top offensive player in all of NCAA I FCS

football.

A LOOK AT THE OFFENSE Portland State’s offense has averaged 453.8 yards (5th in the Big Sky) and 34.7 points (5th in the Big Sky). • Fourteen different Vikings rushed for positive yards and PSU averaged 195.8

yards rushing per game (fourth in the Big Sky). • The Vikings’ ball control offense led the Big Sky in time of possession (rank-

ing second in the nation) at 34:53. • Portland State converted third-downs at a 43% rate, and 4th downs at a

52% rate. The Vikings were 42-49 in the redzone (35 TDs, 7 FG).• The 52 points scored against Southern Utah were the most against a Division

I opponent since a 59-42 win over 16th-ranked Montana State on Oct. 17, 2015. (PSU has scored more against lower division opponents three times since then).

• The Vikings’ 70 points against Simon Fraser were the most since a 77-10 win over Idaho State in 2012. The Vikings amassed 646 yards of total of-fense (300 rushing/346 passing). Seven different players contributed 10 total touchdowns.

even got a shot at a 55-yarder, but that one missed. • Williams made 5-6 field goals at Northern Arizona to tie the school record for

FGs made in a game (Dan Frantz, 1999). • Williams finished the season with 82 consecutive extra points made (and

counting) to establish a new PSU record (previous 77 by Jonathan Gonzales, 2014-15).

• For his career, Williams is 26-36 on field goals, 82-82 on extra points... Wil-liams already ranks eighth all-time at PSU with 25 field goals.

• With 15 field goals made in 2019, he tied for fifth on the season list.• Williams’ kicked a 50-yarder and a 47-yarder at Arkansas to open the season.• His previous long was a 52-yard game-winner at Montana in 2018 with four

seconds left in the game (22-20). • Williams has three of the 16 50+ yard field goals in school history. Only Zach

Brown has kicked more than Williams (five over four seasons).

2020 VIKINGS FOOTBALL

2019-20 Portland State Vikings Basketball

VERY SPECIAL TEAMS Portland State special teams performed well in 2019. Some notes:• JR P Seth Vernon, in his first season as a Viking, averaged 43.2 yards with

11 in excess of 50 yards. Vernon’s average is the best by a Viking since 2014 when All-American Kyle Loomis averaged 46.0... Vernon ranks fifth in the Big Sky Conference and 10th in the nation.

• The Vikings were 15-22 on field goals and 49-49 on extra points this season. • BLOCK PARTY: Portland State had three blocked kicks. SR DT Kenton Bart-

lett knocked down an extra point at Northern Colorado... SR CB Montre Brown blocked a field goal at Idaho State... SO S Anthony Adams blocked a field goal against Simon Fraser... PSU had five blocked kicks/punts last season.

• The Vikings recovered two opponent fumbles on punt returns (Davis Koetter, Emmanuel Daigbe).

EXPERIENCE IS A PLUS: Here is a list of Portland State leaders in games played entering the 2019 season:• CAREER GAMES PLAYED: Anthony Del Toro, DT, 43; Charlie Taumoe-

peau, TE, 41; Kenton Bartlett, DT, 40; Carlos Martin, RB, 36; Montre Brown, CB, 36

• CONSECUTIVE STARTS: Anthony Adams, S, 23; Cody Williams, K, 23; Davis Alexander, 21

SEASON HIGHLIGHT REEL

20 OR LESS Portland State didn’t win at Arkansas (8/31), but the defensive effort was worth noting. PSU held the Razorbacks under 400 yards, allowed only 20 points and allowed the Razorbacks to convert only 5-15 third downs. It was the seventh time in the last 10 games the Vikings held their opponent to 20 points or less. SR ROV Romeo Gunt had a career-high 15 tackles in the game to lead both teams. and was named Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the week. He recorded the fourth-most tackles in the nation for the week. SO LB Robert Holt had a career-high seven tackles and the first takeaway of his career with an interception late in the first half. Holt was honored as the College Sports Madness Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

A RECORD DAY IN VIKINGS FIRST WIN Both offense and defense had big days in Portland State’s 70-7 win over Simon Fraser (9/7). The Vikings rolled up 646 yards of total offense on its way to the most points scored in seven seasons and seventh-most in school history. However, the defense had the most notable performance. The Vikings held Simon Fraser to 113 yards of total offense and the seven points scored were the fewest allowed since 2015 - a stretch of 42 games. It was the eighth time in 11 games that Portland State had allowed 20 points or less. The Vikings had a school-record 20 tackles for loss and eight sacks. That contributed to another school record of -65 rushing yards allowed. The Viks also made nine pass breakups and forced two turnovers.

BIG DAY ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL Portland State left little doubt from the first quarter on in a 59-9 win over Eastern Oregon (9/21).Heavy favorites against the NAIA Mountaineers, the Vikings validated that notion on both sides of the football. Portland State gained 657 yards of total offense and allowed just 133 yards to the Mountain-eers. Quarterback Davis Alexander finished his day midway through the third quarter with 366 passing yards and five touchdowns. On defense, the Vikings forced six three-and-outs, seven punts and recovered one fumble against the Mountaineers. With only nine points allowed, PSU held the ninth of the last 13 opponents under 20 points.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKED Portland State took advantage of every opportunity in a 52-31 win over Southern Utah (10/5). The Vikings forced three turnovers and often had good field position and didn’t miss the chance to convert. PSU scored 28 points during a 7:31 stretch of the second quarter, twice turning takeaways into touchdowns. That had the Vikings up 38-10 at halftime and led to an easy win. The 52 points were the most against a Division I opponent in four seasons. JR QB Davis Alexander had 314 yards of total offense and accounted for three touchdowns. Meanwhile the defense had a stretch of five stops, including three three-and-outs and two turnovers during the second quarter rally.

A RARE SHUTOUT PSU’s defense put the hammer down on Idaho’s offense and the result was something the Vikings had not had since 2006 – A SPAN OF 100 LEAGUE GAMES – a shut out of a Big Sky opponent in 24-0 win over the Vandals (10/12). Defensive coordinator Payam Saadat’s group led the Big Sky in total defense going into the contest and the Viking D improved on those numbers. The Vikings allowed just 236 total yards, picked off four passes, broke up four more, made 10 tackles for loss and six sacks in the victory. Sophomore safety Anthony Adams had another highlight game for the Vikings, intercepting two passes and breaking up two other passes to go with five tackles. Remarkably, one of his pass breakups was deflected into the waiting hands of junior free safety Sam Inos, giving him involvement in a third pick.

SIRGE-ING TO ANOTHER WIN SR RB Sirgeo Hoffman had his biggest day as a Viking and the biggest by a Portland State running back in four years, rushing 28 times for 221 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-30 win at Northern Colorado (10/19). The victory was PSU’s third in a row and got them to five on the season - the most since 2015. Hoffman’s surge led an offense that went for 514 yards overall. Though the defense gave up nearly 500 yards, a pair of key interceptions by FR S Greg Oliver and SO S Anthony Adams aided the win.

DIALING LONG DISTANCE FOR A RECORD SO K Cody Williams continued to impress when he kicked a school-record 56-yard field goal at Northern Colorado. It marked the third time Williams has booted a 50+ yarder in his career, and broke a 44-year mark held by Pat Moore (55 yards).

ANOTHER KICKING RECORD SO K Cody Williams picked up another school record in a 31-29 loss at Northern Arizona (10/26). Williams made five of six field goals to match the mark for most kicks made in a game (Dan Frantz, 1999).

ONE MORE FOR THE BOOKS SO K Cody Williams nabbed his third school record when he extended his extra-point streak to 82 consecutive made at Eastern Washington (11/23). The previous mark was 77.
