    Learning and Teaching Strategies and Methods

    Conceptual and critical understanding (B1-B8) will be progressively developed through a process

    whereby students engage in the critical analysis of texts, new fields of knowledge, concepts andproduction practices through lectures, seminars, group work, tutorials and supervision.

    Assessment

    Assessment is both formative and summative: the dissertation, essays, research folders, studentportfolios of writings, practical projects and spoken presentations (B1-B8).

    Learning and Teaching Strategies and Methods

    At level 4 learning and study skills are developed through the screen study skills/tutorial groupprogramme. These include time-management, note-taking, group work, library and web-basedresearch skills, essay planning and writing, referencing, presentational skills and basic IT skills.Through the core units in moving image and writing cultures students will be introduced to the basictenets of both so that they can start to specialise in that particular strand at level 5.

    At level 5 careers awareness and job application skills are developed in the context of the personaland career development face of the Career and Research Management (Careers) delivered byacademic staff, outside guest speakers from the film and television industries and the UniversityCareers Service after the Easter break. Students will have been offered the choice at the end oflevel 4 to choose the strand in which they wish to specialise and from level 5 onwards they will focuson either the video/moving image or writing strands

    Opportunities to develop key skills are made clear to students for all core and optional units

    Students develop skills in working with others in the production/writing skills unit(s)

    Group-work skills are developed in interactive activities and in student presentations

    Level 6 students draw upon and further develop a range of key and transferable skills in theproduction of their dissertation, video project or writing project. Foremost amongst these areinformation retrieval skills, skills of time planning and project management and the effectivepresentation of an extended piece of written work; all of which are developed initially as part of theresearch management aspect of the project preparation at end of level 5. The final project in eitherthe writing or video/moving image strand will allow students to really promote the specialised skills

    they have developed in either up to that point

    16. Employability Statement

    The Film and Television Studies Programme from Screen Study Skills at Level 4, and across therange of core and optional unit assessment strategies, promotes awareness of, and developscompetence in, key communication and self-presentation skills (oral, written and IT)

    During the programme in core and optional units emphasis is placed upon teaching about filmand television in the context of their industrial, political, historical and commercial culture

    The Careers and Research Management opportunities offered at Level 5 and 6 after Easterspecifically address career preparation in making students aware of job opportunity andinformation sources in film and television related (and wider) spheres of employment, and inpractising formal presentation, CV preparation and self-reflection skills. This will include guestlectures from outside experts as well as a series of sessions run by the Careers service

    Throughout the programme employment skills are supported by the completion of PersonalDevelopment Plans which are discussed at regular intervals in meetings between students andpersonal tutors

    Additionally, optional stands in video/moving image or professional writing units developpractical skills which have a potential professional application. A Media Writing strand (where

    students can opt to work on screenplays and television drama) was created with suchapplications in mind

    Encouragement is given to video production and media writing students to enter national andinternational film-making competitions, send off portfolios of work to employers and to be awareof enterprise initiatives and key contacts in the market place. Alumni with relevant post-graduate experience have returned to help foster these developments

    specific IT packages.

    20. Assessment Strategy

    Level 4The assessment approaches for the core units at level 4 include film and television reviews, journalsand reports, academic essays, practical video production skills, exams and oral presentations.These are designed to enable students to demonstrate a threshold understanding of the keyconcepts in Film and Television Studies, to engage with and practise a range of different kinds ofassessment types in order to maximise student learning opportunities, engagement and integration,and to familiarise them with university assessment regulations and the ethics of academic goodpractice (eg. structuring a literary essay, library skills, handling sources, referencing techniques andawareness of plagiarism). Assessment at Level 4 doesnt include long essays as such extendedwritten work is a better assessment of the scope of student learning at levels 5 and 6, culminating inthe 10,000 word dissertation or extended project. Similarly, there are few formal examinations andthe instances of timed in-class tests occur mainly at levels 5 and 6, when students are betterequipped to be tested against the clock. Practical video production skills at level 4 are of an

    introductory nature, familiarising students with a range of technology and practical skills.

    Level 5Assessment at Level 5 builds on those core academic modes of assessment (the formal essay andthe oral presentation) and introduces variety in both core and optional pathway units. Formalessays may be longer, and oral presentations may be conducted on an individual rather than groupbasis. Practical production skills are at a higher level and involve division of labour and assignmentof specific roles in group production work. Students are required in the Careers element post Easter

    oversee unit assessment and usually attend Unit Assessment Boards;

    approve unit assessment strategy;

    sample assessment artefacts;

    present report to Unit Assessment Boards.

    Award External Examiners (usually also a Subject External Examiner) who will:

    oversee and attend Award/Progression Boards;

    scrutinise and endorse the outcomes of assessment;

    ensure that the standard of the award is maintained at a level comparable with that of similarawards elsewhere in the United Kingdom.
