Welcome to the Summer Portsmouth Music Hub Newsletter! Thank you for your contributions and updates. Portsmouth Music Hub submitted its bid to Arts Council England in February and the successful bids will be announced in May so we will keep you posted.

There was plenty of Hub activity across the city last term and it is excellent to read updates on your twitter and facebook feeds on the home page of the Hub website.

Do check out the organisations linked with the Hub on the website. These include:

• Arts Council England• Artswork• Federation of Music Services• Kagemusha Taiko• Music and the Deaf• National Association of Music Education• National Youth Music Organisations• Royal National Institute for the Blind• Sing Up

There is plenty more information about these organisations on their individual websites.

Seascape, the big Hub event at Portsmouth Guildhall in March, involved a number of Hub Partners and was an excellent evening of very high quality music making by over 500 young performers. Photos from this event can be viewed in the Hub Gallery (visit www.portsmouthmusichub.org and click on “Gallery”) and clips from the show will soon be available on the Hub YouTube channel.

‘Singathlon’, the songbook written by PMS staff to celebrate the Olympics has proved very popular across the UK and the songs as being performed all over the country and abroad. You can hear some samples and order Singathlon and other publications by visiting the publication page on the Portsmouth Music Hub website at www.portsmouthmusichub.org/publications.

Do contact the office if you would like to involve other Hub Partners in your events so the excellent joined up working across the city can continue to flourish.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra announces major new artistic appointmentAmyn Merchant announced as new Leader of the Orchestra

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is delighted to announce the appointment of Amyn Merchant as the new Leader of the Orchestra. Having played with the Orchestra several times over the last few months, Amyn has impressed with his focus and musicality, and he will now be responsible for leading the Orchestra in the concert halls cross across the South West region, from Exeter to Portsmouth.

The BSO’s Principal Conductor Kirill Karabits commented: ‘I am delighted that the Orchestra finally has a new Leader, he is young but already a solid and experienced musician of a high calibre and I hugely look forward to working with Amyn on many future artistic projects’

Amyn said: "I am delighted to be joining the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and to have the opportunity of working with Principal Conductor Kirill Karabits on a regular basis. Rehearsals with him are always thought-provoking, and performances exciting. It is a great honour to be asked to lead such a wonderful and venerable orchestra as the BSO, and I am very much looking forward to the challenges, and no doubt memorable concerts that lie ahead.”

Amyn made his debut as Leader on 28 March in Poole, under Kirill, in a programme of Berlioz Harold in Italy and the popular Beethoven Symphony No 6 ‘Pastorale’.

The London-born violinist joins the BSO from the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and is looking forward to moving to the South Coast over the summer. He started playing the violin at the age of six, winning a scholarship to the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music at twelve. He has worked with the Halle and Philharmonia Orchestras has led the 2nd violins at the Royal Opera House; and appeared as Leader of the Ulster Orchestra and Co-Leader of the Philharmonia. He has also made numerous concerto appearances throughout the UK.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra announces Dougie Scarfe as new Chief Executive

Following a thorough and comprehensive search, the Board of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the appointment of Dougie Scarfe as the new Chief Executive of the organisation. Scarfe is currently Director of the Orchestra, Chorus and Concert Programme at Opera North, and will take up his new post with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra on 2 July 2012.

Scarfe has worked with Opera North for 23 years, first as a member of the horn section and then as a Manager and Director. He is widely credited with transforming the profile of the concert activity there through a range of new collaborations with venues, promoters, media partners and local and national funders; he has also been the driving force behind the Company's first ever

Wagner Ring Cycle. Scarfe has a strong commitment to music education and played a pivotal role in the founding and establishment of Yorkshire Young Musicians, a Centre of Advanced training funded through the Government's Music and Dance Scheme.

Terence O’Rourke, Chairman of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, commented:

“We are delighted that Dougie is joining the BSO as its new Chief Executive. He brings with him an impressive track record as a leading arts administrator, coupled with the understanding of a musician. All major arts organisations are facing a challenging future in the current economic climate, and it takes a special individual to lead an orchestra through this period. This is why we have carried out an exhaustive and demanding search, and we have been determined not to rush into a decision until we find such a person. We believe that in Dougie, we have found that person, and we think he will bring a great deal to the BSO.

With Kirill Karabits as our Principal Conductor, the BSO is playing at a very high level, and I know that Dougie wants to take this orchestra even further forward. Next year is the 120th anniversary of the founding of the Orchestra, and we have a very exciting programme planned to celebrate it. This will be a great platform upon which to build for the future, and to position us even more strongly as one of Britain’s finest orchestras.”

Dougie Scarfe said:

“I am delighted to be joining this wonderful orchestra. With high artistic values, an outstanding Principal Conductor and excellent community engagement embedded in the organisation, there is a great story to be told. I look forward to working with every member of the company to build the orchestra's work; rooted in the South West but with a strong national and international reputation.”

Hampshire Guitar Orchestra

One Hundred and Counting

Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (HAGO) is a local community orchestra playing classical guitars. But not just ordinary classical guitars, four different sizes. It gives a unique sound with both depth and sparkle, and yet it's still sweet and gentle. HAGO has been playing concerts locally for charities and fundraising events since 1999, and this year sees its 100th concert. To celebrate this event, HAGO has teamed up with special guests The Cambridge Guitar Orchestra for a celebration concert that takes place at St George's Church Portsea - just across the road from Gunwharf Quays - at 7:30pm on Saturday June 23rd.

The concert is part of the 2012 Portsmouth Festivities, and you will find booking details in their brochure and on their website. Tickets are £7.50, but kids come for £1.00 and the concert is both family-friendly and fun.

You can read more about HAGO at www.hago.org.uk and you can watch them on YouTube.

HAGO hope you can come along and add to the people who leave a HAGO concert saying "Well, I never expected THAT!"

The musicroom acoustic showcase in Portsmouth is back by popular demand for 2012!

In anticipation for this year’s event, and inspired by the sheer number of performers expected to enter, the showcase team have announced a new series of lead up shows especially for local acoustic acts.

Sponsored by musicroom, the run up gigs will take place at the intimate Edge Of The Wedge venue attached to the Wedgewood Rooms, from the beginning of April through to June. The annual musicroom acoustic showcase itself will be hosted at the Wedgewood Rooms main venue some time in July.

Whilst details of this year’s prizes still under wraps, entrants should expect another year of fantastic incentives for winners and runners-up.

Last year’s showcase winners, The Day of Rabblement, walked away with a beautiful, new Tanglewood acoustic guitar, whilst £100 and £50 musicroom vouchers went to the second and third placed finalists. In line with the prizes of previous years too, smaller gifts and discounts will be awarded to the winners of individual heats.

As always, the showcase team will be fair and professional with every band and artist who enters, and all performers will be paid. If you’re interested, or know someone who might be, and from the Portsmouth or Fareham area, send an email to: [email protected]. Demos, biographies, press packs can also be dropped into the Wedgewood Rooms Box Office or musicroom store on Commercial Road.

St Patrick’s Day Concert

Portsmouth Light Orchestra gave a highly successful St Patrick's Day concert at the Church of the Resurrection, Drayton, on 17th March. Proceeds were to boost funds for the Development Fund of the Drayton Centre (formerly Drayton Institute). There was an audience of over 100 people and they very much appreciated the variety of music played - including Jamaican Rumba, Belle of the Ball, Vltava and Titanic. Also featured was Portsmouth's own flute choir - Flute It, who provided two slots of about 10 minutes and played some traditional and well-known Irish music.

Vacancies

Due to retirement of some members of the orchestra, we now have vacancies on trumpet, trombone, 2nd oboe, bassoon and percussion (we have a drum kit available). If anyone would like to join us on any of those instruments, please get in touch with Ed McDermott on 02392 602460 or Val Loft on 02392 371135. Minimum standard required - Grade 5. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 7.45 pm - 9.45 pm at Buckland Community Centre, Malins Road, Portsmouth.

Concert

The next concert will be on 6th October 2012 at Admiral Lord Nelson School. More details to follow in the Autumn newsletter or online at the Portsmouth Music Hub website nearer the time.

St John’s Chapel Choir in Cambridge

St John’s Chapel Choir has been in high demand over the Spring term and given an astonishing 22 public performances since Christmas. They have sung at a number of cathedral services, in Portsmouth Cathedral, Guildford Cathedral and St Paul's Cathedral in London, and continued to entertain audiences far and wide in places like Romsey Abbey and Portchester Castle with their acclaimed Angelic Voices Concerts. Several of these concerts completely sold out well in advance such is their popularity. In addition they were named as an overall winner of the Choral Section of the Portsmouth Music Festival for the second successive year and were chosen to sing at the prestigious Winners Gala Concert in the Kings Theatre. They also competed in the national Choir of the Year 2012 competition in Exeter.

There was much publicity surrounding the choirs forthcoming tour to Italy in the summer. The boys will sing for mass in the Papal Archbasilica in Rome as well as lead the Sunday morning mass in the Vatican, and the choristers have given BBC TV and BBC Radio Broadcasts this term.

The highlight of the term was perhaps singing for BBC television for the Easter Day edition of Songs of Praise. St John’s Chapel Choir will also spend seven days in York Minster during the week after Easter as Choir-in-Residence as well as singing in Durham Cathedral. Quite a busy couple of months then for the boys – and there are still four further tours before the academic year finishes to look forward to!
