Sermon Outline The Rest of the Story: Shaken

Acts 4:23-35

Pastor’s Page The Power of Intentional Relationships

First Church, Jesus built His earthly ministry on relationships. First Jesus invested Himself heavily in His relationship with His heavenly father. Repeatedly in scripture we see Jesus drawing off to quiet places to be in prayer. Because He had such a strong relationship with God the Father, Jesus was then best prepared to share God’s love, grace, and life in his human relationships. Whether it was mentoring His disciples, bringing healing to folks in need, or engaging in conversation, Jesus intentionally built His ministry through relationships. In this regard it’s almost like the relationship Jesus had with God the Father overflowed into all his earthly relationships. And in that way people’s lives were transformed through those relationships with Jesus. This is our desire here at First Church as well. By intentionally focusing on our relationship with Christ, we pray that there will be an “overflow” of that relationship into all of our earthly relationships… with the result being transformed lives. Relationship is the key context of our ministry. In light of this, I want to remind us of and invite us into two opportunities that we have EVERY week at First Church to build relationships with God and others:

1) Every Friday morning at 6AM at the North Campus we have an opportunity to intentionally invest and be filled in our relationship with God. We gather for 30 minutes of silent prayer in which we dwell in God’s presence in prayer. 2) Every Wednesday evening we share in our First Night meal and worship

experience at 5PM at the Christian Life Center for one hour. This is an easy and terrific time to come and have a meal with our

community neighbors. Sharing in a meal is one of the easiest ways we have to build relationships with others. Especially with school ending and school sports and musical events coming to a close, the summer is one of the best times to bring your family and eat with our neighbors. If you haven’t already, please take advantage of this relationship-building opportunity.

When we are walking closely in our relationship with God, God’s love easily overflows into all of our human relationships as well. May we be a church that constantly seeks to be in relationship… relationship with God and with others. Just like Jesus modeled. Please know what a great joy it is for me to be in relationship with you First Church. In Christ, Pastor Matt

I. At Pentecost a __________________ called Christianity was begun II. The early Christians had an experience that made them utterly _______________________. What was it? A progression:

A) They were shaken by the ______________

B) Believers were shaken by ______________

C) As a result believers turned around and they ____________ the

world

III. We are often shaken when any __________________of our wealth, freedom, love, and life are taken away IV. What do the believers pray for in the face of threats? ________________ V. Your circumstance is not your _________________ VI. We know God is real to us when a Holy Spirit ___________ happens in our lives VII. The ____________ God shakes us the __________ the world will shake us

Life Reflections: What brings more “shaking” in my life—the circumstances of this world or Christ within me? What needs to happen in my life so that I am so anchored in Christ that the circumstances of my life no longer dictate my happiness or satisfaction? Am I willing to pray like the early disciples to speak God’s Word with great boldness? How bold am I for Christ? How “sold out?” Do I believe that God could use me/us to be part of a movement of movements for the glory of God? What does my role in such a movement look like?

Scripture Reflection: Acts 4:31 31After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly
