Your support made a tremendous difference for thousands of people this year. This report shows all that we have accomplished together.

More than 35,000 people turn to Multnomah County

Library every day.

1-11

Kids are reading and succeeding. When money is tight at home and parents face stressful situations, children can lose out. This past year, the library leveled the playing fi eld for thousands by bringing more books, programs and strong reading role models to children, parents and grandparents than ever before. Library experts worked in schools, shelters, libraries and across neighborhoods in an ambitious effort to reach every child in our community. Students were offered homework help around-the-clock and records were broken, once again, with a Summer Reading program that engaged more than 98,000 young readers.

Families are thriving.Parents need all the help they can get these days. Families hit hard by job loss, and those forced to economize, turned to our library once again this year. As the only widely available source of free arts, cultural and educational programs, the library offered classes, performances and storytimes that reachedmore than 325,000 children and adults. Families who could not afford symphony or theater tickets, community college classes or local workshops were able to enjoy free performances, meet well-known authors, practice a new language, and learn about car repair and growing their own food.

Our community needs a strong library, now more than ever.

VOTE YES IN MAY

People are learning things that will change their lives.Learning is one of the greatest pleasures in life, but making unexpected changes in life is not always easy. Many people in this turbulent economy are having to learn new things and remake their careers and their lives. Job prospects are daunting. Retirement accounts are not what they were. Digital and fi nancial literacy have emerged as critical community needs. Public computers at libraries are at capacity, with people sometimes having to wait more than an hour to get online. Library staff and volunteers are busier than ever answering tough questions, offering one-on-one guidance, and designing workshops that help people navigate the challenges of job seeking, foreclosures, health care options and new technology.

We are connecting with each other and the larger world. The library keeps us connected to each other and to big ideas. Students, neighbors and new acquaintances read and engage in meaningful conversations that help us better understand one another. Small business people research new opportunities. Seniors and those who cannot get to the library stay connected to our community through the more than 200,000 books and materials that are delivered right to their doors. And children learn important sustainability lessons about sharing resources and responsible borrowing.

Your support is making our library stronger. We are so grateful to the many people who supported our library’s remarkable work this year. Day-to-day library operations are paid for with the generous support of the public. The Library Foundation builds on that commitment with initiatives made possible only because of private support. 2012 is a very important year for our library. The library levy, approved by voters in 2006, expires in June 2012. Foundation staff and volunteers will continue to focus on our literacy and program priorities, but we will also dedicate ourselves to the passage of the library’s funding measure on the May 2012 ballot. Together, we will build a bright future, and secure a strong library system, for generations to come.
