Voice of Democracy/Patriot’s Pen Winners Selected

VFW Post 2503’s 2017 Voice of Democracy/

Patriot’s Pen competition is complete, win-ners have been selected, and Post 2503 en-tries have been submitted to the District 10 competition. Post 2503 winners are as follows:

Voice of Democracy 1st Place – Samuel Kricsfeld,

Millard North High School

2nd Place – Leovardo Perez-Tejeda, Burke High School

3rd Place – Rose McCaffrey, Burke High School

Patriot’s Pen 1st Place – Cecelia Sladovnik,

St Margaret Mary School

2nd Place – Aniyah Hughes, McMillan Magnet Center

3rd Place – Zhenntifer Wheeler, McMillan Magnet Center

The Voice of Democracy is an audio-essay contest

is open to students in 9th – 12th grade and this year’s theme is “My Responsibility to Ameri-ca.” Each student submitted a typed essay and a 3 to 5 minute recording of him/her reading the es-say. Every year, over 40,000 high school students nationwide compete for a share of more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Prizes and scholarships can be awarded at the Post, District, State, and National levels. State winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., Feb-ruary 25 – March 1, 2017, to tour the city, be hon-ored by the VFW and its VFW Auxiliary, and to receive a portion of the $153,000 in national awards, in which the top scholarship is $30,000.

The Patriot’s Pen youth essay-writing contest is open to students in 6th – 8th grade. Last year more than 120,000 students participated in this con-test. The national winners will receive at least $500. The first-place national award is currently $5,000 plus an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the winner and a parent or guardian. Each student submitted a typed 300 to 400-word essay speaking to this year’s theme, “The America I Be-lieve in.” Like Voice of Democracy winners, prizes are awarded at the Post, District, and State lev-els. Special thanks to this year’s judges who volun-teered their time to support this important pro-gram: Danny Lang, Sharon Cooper, Lee Terry, Kathy Raabe, Leigh Freeman and John Cleveland.
