TAKNEEK '15

Post-Conduction Report

Submitted by:

Chirag Jha

General Secretary

Science and Technology Council

Overall Coordinators:

Hemant Singh, Sambit Das and Utkarsh Srivastava

Event Structure: Takneek 2015 was conducted into two parts ‘The SnT Code’ on 29th Aug’15 and

the remaining events during 3rd – 6th Sept’15. More or less majority of events were organised on

schedule, except when there were technical glitches or bad weather conditions (peculiar to

Aeromodelling events).

The 4-days long technical event formally began with a lamp lighting ceremony by the Dean,

Students’ Affairs and Associate Dean, Students’ Activities on 3rd Sep followed by a wild soccer match.

The events were organised at various venues including the SnT Clubs, OAT, Multipurpose Room-

NewSAC, Lecture Halls, Computer Centre, Airstrip and etc. Overall championship trophy and sub-

category trophies were distributed on the closing day, 6th Sep.

Major Highlights:

The events were well received by the campus community. The problem statements were

well designed to target both undergraduates and postgraduates.

It was ensured that apart from club specific events there must be general events based on

simple mechanics, design, presentation and social cause events; undertaking students of all

interests.

There were total 45 events, out of which 2 events had to be scrapped due to unavoidable

circumstances.

Total 8 new events were introduced in this Takneek on different themes and replacing the

previous ones, these were – Marketing Villa (BClub), What If? (Sci-Cof), Atoms-to-Astronomy

(Astro), ElectroWiz (EClub), Beluga (Aero), Game-of-Drones (Aero), SAP-ON (DesCon),

Writer’s Digest (Flagship).

Event and fixtures were scheduled to ensure smooth participation of the five-pools.

A new sub-category ‘Technovate’ was introduced, it comprised of events that requires good

design methodology, CAD software, latest electronics and hardware in amateur robotics,

Radio-Controlled bot control and maneuverability.

Paper presentation and Eureka received good participation from PGs, and proved significant

for the inter IIT Tech Meet 2016.

Organizing team also tried live screening of matches but due to lack of resources, they could

only manage screening of DoTA (BClub event) in OAT.

Grievances:

Complaints filed by the Mauryans:

o Robotricks – Dimensions of the bot of one pool exceeded the maximum dimension

(including the tolerances). They asked for penalizing the defaulter team or disqualify them.

o Game of Drones – The pool captain claimed that one participant (from Mughals) was given

extra attempts, unlike the participants of other pools. Their team ended up getting first

position in the event.

o Gaint Particle Chess – Their team was given less time than other participants (not according

to rules).

o Black Box – The pool captain demanded re-evaluation of their entries, since they doubted

the results (none of their teams were among top five).

Complaints filed by the Mughals:

o Beluga – The Mughals’ participant claimed another participant (from Mauryans) was allowed

to take more number of trials. He also claimed the atmospheric conditions for the later was

smooth and extremely different from rest.

o Robotricks – Same as pool Mauryans.

o Electrowiz – They claimed that the rules were changed on spot without discussion with all

pool captains.

o SnT Code – In the location based tasks, there was no prior information that pools had to

collect the clues from respective locations.

Action taken: Following suggestions were implemented after the sGRC members discussed

with respective pool representatives. These have been implemented keeping in view not to

hamper the spirit of the event and avoid undue desolation of students’ efforts.

o The event coordinators admitted that the tolerance was not mentioned in the rules or pre-

conduction report. But, before the start of event they made it clear to all participants that the

limit was 10% and all the bots were within the limit.

o Game-of-drones was being introduced for the first time and it included use of multi-rotors.

Since, there is lot of uncertainty in its flight (due to sensor fluctuations and electronics

replacement), that is why coordinators had to allow multiple attempts.

o No such claim of rule violation was made by the opponent team.

o The event coordinators cross-checked all the answer books and yet, there was no change in

the final results (although they committed that there were few variations and some got more

marks than earlier).

o The event Cruise Control had to be organised before Beluga. It was decided with all the

participants at the venue that Beluga will resume as soon as Cruise Control concludes. Also,

the weather condition under no circumstances is under anyone’s control.

o The changes were only based on technicalities and the type of task, which was discussed with

all participants (from all pools) and had nothing to be discussed with the pool captains.

o The location based clues were similar and in same state for all the participating pools and none

of them had any problem with it (except Mughals). (PS - Bringing this issue into notice after 8

days of the event conclusion, straight away questioned its genuinity.)

After prolonged deliberations, the above mentioned solutions were accepted by the pool captains

and final results could be declared.

Final Results:

Recommendations:

For the presentation based events like Eureka, the judging panel generally comprises of

faculty from different fields. Hence it is desired that the scores be normalized or made

objective for better comparison.

With the advent of more technically enhanced events and the ones including matches

among pools, it is necessary to provide better viewership and install portable screens (if

possible).

All the components and hardware (non-consumable) purchased by pools must be

recorded for future use as it will help reduce expenses.

Pools must inform well in advance for the gymkhana fund advance and pay to the clubs

for components (instead the bills being submitted later, then cleared through council

budget and create problems).

For the web based events like Crypto, it is not secure enough to host on students’ server

and separate hosting website must be used.

The entire Takneek organizing team is thankful to all the campus community for their active

participation. Special thanks to the members of sGRC for their efforts and presence during

the event.
