Australian Economy

• Similar to the Canadian experience, Australia survived the Global Financial Crisis better than many other advanced economies.

• In 2009 Australia was the only country to record positive economic growth, and the only country in the OECD to increase export volumes.

• In January 2010, employment increased for the 5th straight month to an 11 month low of 5.3%.

• The Economist Intelligence Unit expects Australia’s economy to grow by 2% in 2010, and 2.5% in 2011.

• Australia has benefited from growth in the Asian region (eg. China, India, ASEAN)

Sector Overview

• Environment, Cleantech and Renewable Energy sector in Australia is well established and sophisticated.

• There is strong growth and new players active in emerging sectors.

• Expansion is in response to major environmental challenges and support from government, industry, communities and investors.

• Australian environment industry plan targets A$40B p.a. expenditure by end 2010 – (eg. A$24B for water infrastructure, A$4.5B Clean Energy Initiative,

A$2.75B Climate Change Action Fund)

• Climate change, water efficiency, collection, management and reuse, and desalination projects have strong government support and funding. Cleantech is receiving a lot of attention in Australia.

• From 1 January 2011 the RET will be split into two parts:– Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) – Large-scale Renewable Energy Target (LRET)

Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS)

• Separated from the original climate change package, the CPRS is still under negotiation.
