Digital revolution is helping India march towards a digitally connected nation by harnessing
power of technology led innovations. Our citizens are increasingly getting connected via cutting
edge technologies like 4G and WiFi which are helping them in improving and empowering their
lives.
As per latest estimates, India has deployed around 125,000 public WiFi hotspots thanks to
government and other industry stakeholders. These initiatives of providing broadband
connectivity particularly in rural India has helped tremendously in providing digital centric
information and services to our citizens. Besides, there are multiple initiatives driven by the
stakeholders for providing broadband access in schools, hospitals, hospitality, ofices, homes
which is helping in boosting the uptake of WiFi led technologies in the country.
However India still has a long way to go since there's a sizeable population spread across the
country which needs to be connected via broadband. Therefore the vision laid down by the
Government in National Digital Communications Policy 2018 for deploying 10 million WiFi
hotspots by 2022 needs to be realized for connecting the un-connected and creating a new age
India.
Keeping this in view, some of the recent announcements by Ministry of Communications and
Electronics & IT appear to be in the right direction and much needed. These initiatives are focused
namely around providing high speed broadband access by installing 500,000 WiFi hotspots in
rural India, Commissioning 100,000 digital villages and Providing digital delivery of services. All
these steps will help in creating a robust digital infrastructure for empowering & transforming
lives of citizens in rural India and act as a powerful medium for creating a new age India.
