POSTGRADUATE SEASON

2013

Page 2: Postgraduate Season 2013

Mountview’s postgraduate season showcases a diverse range of work.

At the Bridewell Theatre Mountview’s postgraduate acting students present French plays, classic and modern. The Dispute and The Will are two short social comedies by Marivaux, the 18th century master of the form, examining how children react to their upbringing. They are presented alongside This Child by contemporary French playwright Joël Pommerat which looks with 21st century eyes at how parents and children indelibly affect each other.

Musical theatre postgraduates present two vintage 1930’s musicals at Bernie Grant Arts Centre: Cole Porter’s Nymph Errant and Babes in Arms by Rodgers and Hart. Less frequently performed than others by these musical giants, they nonetheless include some of the writers’ finest scores and wittiest lyrics.

The season begins, however, with Mountview’s postgraduate directors each directing small casts in their own choice of play at the Cockpit Theatre. Classic works by Brian Friel and Athol Fugard can be seen alongside brand new writing and even a chamber musical performed by a cast of just two.

We look forward to welcoming you this summer.

Set in apartheid South Africa, this is the story of Hally, a young white man and his two black servants Sam and Willy. Fugard’s play explores how your life is shaped by the views of those around you, and the redemptive power of kite flying.

Initially banned in South Africa, the original Broadway production was nominated for a Tony in 1982 and won Drama Desk, London Critic’s Circle and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play.

A new musical about love, coffee, capitalism and other addictive substances from award-winning writer and composer Chris Bush and Ian McCluskey (TONY! The Blair Musical).

Lyrical but accessible, small in scale but thematically huge, Café Nation asks how and why we live the way we do, and what’s stopping us from changing. Are we really living, or just on a coffee break?

“They call it the third place – designed to be between work and home, life and death, Heaven and Hell – we are the in-between.”

Two orphaned boys have been forced from the rural wilderness they know and arrive in a bleak brutal London they don’t.

Seeking refuge in a pub basement they plot their escape, only to find themselves locked in a battle with the pub landlord over their dead father’s sordid legacy.

Rob Hayes is the winner of the 2013 Tom Erhardt Award for up and coming writers.

“To us, searching for an answer, some kind of logic, it always remained an act of mindless cruelty, but of course that was the point.”

During a peaceful demonstration three civilians find themselves trapped in the Londonderry Mayor’s office. Outside, the world uses their plight to paint them as terrorists or martyrs.

Inspired by true events, Brian Friel’s 1973 classic is still potent, especially in the light of the 2010 Saville Inquiry which declared the Bloody Sunday shootings unjustifiable.

A cast of just three actors play all 17 parts in this production which asks the question what is the reality and how does it become history?

“Stand your ground! Don’t move! Don’t panic! This is your city! This is your city!”

3 July 1937 - writer Christopher Isherwood takes his friend, the composer Benjamin Britten, then just 24, to the Jermyn Street Bathhouse to get drunk and have fun. There they meet Isherwood’s old friend, the poet W H Auden.

Based on Britten’s diaries, this is a glimpse into the friends’ relationship and experiences of London’s pre-war gay underworld.

Very Pleasant Sensations celebrates the centenary of Britten’s birth.

During World War II Russia was the only country to allow female fighter pilots to engage in battle. White Rose tells the true story of ‘Double Ace’ Lily Litvak, the first woman to shoot down another plane, and the battles she had on the ground to win the respect of the men in command.

White Rose originally premiered at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre in 1985 starring Ken Stott and Tilda Swinton.

An ingénue with a love of travel heads off on a Grand Tour, intent on finding a lover. Her hunt takes her to Paris, Venice, Greece and the Arabian dessert, accompanied all the way by what Cole Porter considered his favourite score.

After its premiere at the Palace Theatre, Manchester Nymph Errant opened at London’s Adelphi Theatre in October 1933 starring Gertrude Lawrence as the free-spirited heroine and featuring choreography by Agnes de Mille.

To escape being sent to a work-farm, wholesome teenager Val Lamar convinces his friends to put on a show.

This quintessentially American musical has given the world classic Rodgers and Hart numbers ‘Where or When’, ‘My Funny Valentine’ and ‘The Lady is a Tramp’.

Babes in Arms was originally staged at the Shubert Theatre, New York before being turned into an MGM musical, directed by Busby Berkeley and starring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland.

“Skullduggery! That’s what I’m up to. In the immortal words of Fleming, ‘the show must go on’, but OURS, not his!”

An undisputed master of French comedy, Marivaux examines the tangled lives and loves of the 18th century nobility.

In The Dispute idle aristocrats test the nature of love by releasing into society two pairs of adolescents who have been raised in strict seclusion. Neil Bartlett’s translation (originally commissioned for the RSC and Lyric Hammersmith) is paired with a later and rarely-performed work, The Will, in which the hard-up upper class connives to out-wit a will and marry for love as well as money.

“You’ll see hearts as virgin as Eden, minds as unadulterated as the first minds, pure; perhaps even purer if that’s possible.”

Two plays by Pierre de Marivaux Translated by Neil Bartlett and Michael Sadler Directed by Douglas Rintoul

Created from verbatim interviews with families on an estate in France, Joël Pommerat’s play exposes the realities of parent/child relationships and the raw emotions that frequently go unspoken.

Pommerat is one of France’s most highly-regarded playwrights but his work is little known in the UK.

Philosophical and spare, This Child reveals how French theatre continues to differ from its English counterpart.

“At last I’ll find the strength to get a grip on my life. This child will give me strength.”
