SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN
The Shrine Hospitals are for children with orthopedic problems or severe burns requiring medical care. They are operated by the Shrine of North America and accept patients without regard to race or creed.
The Shrine accepted the challenge to build and operate the Shriners Hospitals in 1922. Now our Hospitals are acknowledged among the very finest in the world. They are spiritual, as well as physical, sanctuaries planned and designed for young patients. The operating rooms represent the highest standards of service as do the physical therapy and the cast and brace rooms.
Educational facilities are provided by the local Board of Education at the Hospitals so that patients may keep abreast of their education progress. Toys and games for all children and hobbies and handicraft activities for the older ones are a part of life in a Shrine Hospital. Children are encouraged to follow activities and interests normal for their ages including Scouting and other youth movements.
The school, activities and the entertainment keep the atmosphere at the Shriners Hospitals happy and pleasant. The children help each other and are rightfully proud of every bit of progress made by any fellow patient. There are also complete facilities for the treatment of those children whose conditions do not require Hospitalization. Outpatients in the Clinic are assured of the same expert and exhaustive attention given residents. Even infants a few weeks old are admitted regularly, particularly to the clinics with parents taking them home after each visit.
Any Shriner can provide a prospective patient with an application. If the application is approved, instructions are sent to the parents or guardians as to future procedure. Applications can be obtained from the Recorders Office.
The hospital staff asks only for the parent’s or guardian’s wholehearted cooperation and understanding. Everything, including clothing, toilet articles, linen, food, dental care, braces and crutches, and other necessities, in addition to complete medical treatment will be provided without cost to the family.

SHRINERS CREED
Shriners believe in God and that He created man to serve His purposes, among which is service to others in His name. We believe that care for the less fortunate, especially children who suffer from burns and crippling disease, is our institutional calling.
We are patriots, each willing to serve his country with fidelity and courage. We cherish independence under law and freedom with responsibility.
We honor family. We respect our parents, wives and children. We should instill in our children the tenets of this creed, and the heritage from which it emanates.
As individuals, we pledge ourselves to integrity, virtue and nobility of character. Our intentions will be honorable, our relationships will be trustworthy and our spirits forgiving of each other.
As brothers, we offer each other fraternal affection and respect. Together we will support each other in adherence to this creed, so that we and our communities will be the better because of our fraternity and its principles.
As Shriners, we look beyond ourselves to serve the needs of others, especially children who cannot help themselves. We believe Shriners Hospitals to be the world’s greatest philanthropy, and we covenant with each other to support its “temples of mercy” with spirit, time, talent and means.
SHRINE PROTOCOL
SALUTEThe military salute is used when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and during the playing or singing of the National Anthems.
SALUTE TO THE FLAGA Noble who is wearing his Fez will execute a right-handed salute when the colors are within six paces of him; he will not remove his Fez. After the colors have passed, he should drop his right hand. In case the same colors pass the same point again, as frequently happens in a Ceremonial session or in display drills, the colors need not be saluted a second time. The same rule applies to street parades.
PRAYERDuring the offering of the prayer, the Fez should be removed and held in the left hand over the heart with letters facing forward. As the Shrine is composed of members of all denominations, Chaplains should assure that their prayers, invocations, etc. do not single out any particular denomination, but are monotheistic in nature so as to include all.
THE SALAAMA Noble addressing the Potentate while he is presiding in the East should always give the Salaam. The Salaam should not be given at any other time.
SALUTATIONSAn Imperial Officer, as well as a Past Imperial Potentate, is always addressed as “Imperial Sir”. A Potentate or Past Potentate is always addressed as “Illustrious Sir”.

THE SHRINERS THOUGHT OF ME
I’m but a little cripple,A kid with a twisted knee,And my life was of little value,’Til the Shriners thought of ME.
My days were dark and dreary,My hopes were small and wee,and I was filled with torture,’Til the Shriners thought of ME.
I felt as if in a dungeon,Under heavy lock and key,I could not see the sunshine,’Til the Shriners thought of ME.
But now I’m getting better,And happy as can be,A kid with a smile upon his face,Since the Shriners thought of ME.
A few more months of kindness,And then I can with glee,Play as other children play,Since the Shriners thought of ME.
And in the battle for a chance,I believe the Greatest Referee,Will surely give the decisions,To these Shriners who thought of ME.
Written by a Shriner unknown . . .Sharing His Shrine . . . with each of us.
