It has been a wonderful, productive first quarter, and I hope you enjoyed your Fall Break! We’ve had so much going on already that I’d really like to express my gratitude for our children, our parents, and all of the helpers in this wonderful Lahaina community.
Thank you to all parents and families who attended our Open House, what a great turn-out! We shared a lot of information, and I hope you all had some quality time with your children while meeting with their teachers. Overall, we got some great feedback and I think it was a success!
I also want to say Mahalo to all those who pitched in on our Realtor Action Day Saturday, Sept 14th. Lahaina Intermediate School was selected by Hawaii Realtors to assist with our campus improvement. We had volunteer realtors, parents, and students on campus painting doors yellow and bathroom walls with creative, fun designs and positive reinforcements. I’m so happy with what’s been done, and I am excited for what’s to come with the beautification of our campus! Please call the school if you or someone you know is interested in helping.
Another huge MAHALO to all involved with getting our LED Sign installed! Goodfellow Bros was the first to respond to our request for help, and they generously donated their time and skills to understand the necessary path of installation, dug trenches, and poured concrete for the base. They also reached out to Elcco Electric to handle our electrical needs, who also generously donated their time and materials to provide power to the sign. Once all that work was complete, our good friends F & H Construction took over the actual installation of the sign itself (again at no cost to us!). From there it was up to Lahaina Intermediate School’s extremely patient and knowledgeable Tech Coordinator, Tom Norton, to get the software and connectivity piece working properly, which was not easy or made very clear from the sign company. He sent a lot of emails and made many phone calls to get it sorted. Thank you, thank you, thank you! It has been quite the process, but I am so happy to see the sign finally up and running. Please be patient with us as we figure out what works and what doesn’t, it will take some getting used to. We know that it is very bright and we have adjusted the time to come on at 6am and go off at 7 pm.
We have another fun volunteer opportunity for anyone who’s interested - our Renaissance Program is getting ready for their 1st Quarter Reward Day, Wet-N-Wild, which will be held on Friday, November 1st from 10am-2pm here on campus. All students can earn their Renaissance Card and be eligible to participate with 4 hours of community service, positive behavior, and no Ds or Fs on their 1st Quarter report cards. If you’re interested in participating in this fun event please email [email protected] or call 808-662-3956 ext 278.
I hope you’ve all had a great 1st quarter as well, and I look forward to a productive 2nd Quarter too!
Aloha from Mrs. Bookland!

Lahaina Intermediate School was recently the happy recipient of Hawaii Realtors Realtor Action Day (RAD) on September 14th. RAD’s focus for 2019 is to assist schools with campus improvement, so on that Saturday both realtor and LIS staff & student volunteers came to LIS and painted the doors on our D building yellow, as well as positive reinforcements in the bathrooms & hallways. Mahalo to all who participated!

Vaping: A Growing EpidemicVaping and the use of electronic cigarettes has become a public health concern nationwide with many organizations formulating anti-vaping campaigns across the country to combat this growing epidemic. Sadly, Hawai’i high school teens have reported to vape two times as much as youth nationally with 27% of Hawai’i middle school students reporting having tried e-cigarettes (Hawaii Department of Health, 2017). The Department of Education has initiated a social medial burst plan to provide awareness about e-cigarette use. In order to join the campaign and promote awareness, we here at LIS would like to educate not only our students, but our parents as well. Help us at Lahaina Intermediate spread awareness of the harmful effects of vaping and ECigarette use by starting conversations with your children at home.
