A Nugget From My Spiritual Journey…

God has a way of reminding us that He often uses the quiet obedience of His people to do amazing things. As we attended the recent 100th Anniver-sary celebration at Falls Creek on a Sunday night—with 6000-7000 others—we were all reminded of how that wonderful place began with just two pray-ing men. When J.B. Rounds and W.D. Moorer knelt to pray in the Arbuckle Mountains they could have never pictured what Falls Creek would look like 100 years later and how many thousands—more likely millions—of lives would be changed around the world in one way or another because of the ripple effect of what happens at that place! There are actually more interna-tional missionaries and other ministry servants that are serving around the world who were called out while at Falls Creek than any other one place! Many Baptists are familiar with “World Crafts,” a worldwide craft ministry featuring handmade items by women whose lives have been changed be-cause of this income-producing opportunity and, hopefully, because their lives are also being touched by the Gospel. Yet, that did not start out as a worldwide ministry. It began with one sweet missionary wife, Betty Butcher (yes, a beloved Oklahoman), who was serving in Thailand with her mission-ary doctor husband, Dr. Orby Butcher. While there, she quietly and faithfully began working with just 10 women, teaching them crafts and helping them get started. In those days, Betty never, ever realized God was helping her start a worldwide ministry! In God’s Word, we see page after page of faithful servants who just obeyed God with what He put in front of them to do. None of them ever knew we would exist now and still be reading about and learning from their life stories thousands of years later. Yet, we read of the “greats”—Noah, Abraham, Jo-seph, Moses, David, Ruth, Esther, Mary & Joseph, Peter, Stephen, Paul, etc, etc, etc. They weren’t trying to be “great.” They were just listening, trusting, obeying, and walking the walk of being faithful. Each of us know persons today who do the same, not trying to impress anyone—just faithfully serving. God sees. God knows. God has a plan to bless and multiply their obedience. Thank the Lord He turns the “ordinary” into “extraordinary” in a way that only He can!

“Idolatry: The Wave of the Present Exodus 20:4-6

This is the second of the ten commandments. It speaks directly to man’s relationship to God. “You shall not make for yourself an idol…” Nelson’s Illus-trated Bible Dictionary defines idol as “something we ourselves make into a god...anything that stands between us and God or something we substitute for god.” Literally, the word is PESEL, “carved wood or stone” and later “molten metal” (i.e. houses, buildings, cars, trucks, etc.?). An idol is “anything or being that becomes an object of our affection, alle-giance or worship in preference to God.” -worshipping the “created” vs. the “Creator Himself.” Look closely at these verses:

I. The CHARACTERISTICS of Idolatry (v.4) A. It is OFTEN FASHIONED BY MAN (v.4b) Leviticus 19:4 B. It is USUALLY FASHIONED AFTER CREATION (v.4c) Deuteronomy 4:16 C. It is ALWAYS CONDEMNED BY GOD (v.4a) Exodus 23:24

II. The CAUSES for idolatry (v.5) A. A MISCONCEPTION OF THE PERSON OF GOD (v.5b) Isaiah 40:13-14 B. A MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE PLACE OF GOD (v.5c) Joshua 24:19 C. A MISTAKEN IDEA ABOUT THE POWER OF GOD (context: Exodus) Psalms 77:15

III. The CONSEQUENCES OF IDOLATRY (v.5) (results in a curse from God) A. A PERSONAL CURSE from God (v.5a) Deuteronomy 27:15 B. A POSTERITY CURSE from God (v.5b) Exodus 34:7

IV. The CURE for idolatry (v.6) A. LOVE GOD with all your heart (v.6a) B. OBEY GOD in all your ways (v.6b)

“NO IDOLS” means “nothing or no one standing between you and God.” Nothing or no one else is an object of your allegiance or worship. Who do you worship...REALLY?

It Might Preach!

Word of Encouragement October is known for many things. Count them down: 10-Autumn leaves, 9-football season, 8–national seafood month, 7–fall beer festi-vals, 6–Halloween haunts again, 5–pumpkin spiced everything, 4–films without super heroes, 3–Presidential debates, 2–new season of T.V. shows and 1–Columbus Day. But did you know that October is also known (at least by Christian history) as “Reformation Day” (October 31). Reformation Day is a Protestant religious holiday celebrated on Octo-ber 31 in remembrance of the onset of the Reformation. Traditionally, this day is widely held to be the day German monk Martin Luther nailed his ninety-five thesis on the door of the All Saints Church in Wittenberg. The day is celebrated especially by Lutheran and Reformed churches. In the United States, churches often transfer the holiday so it falls on the Sunday (Reformation Sunday) on or before October 31, with All Saints Day moved to the Sunday on or after November 1. For most churches in America today the observance of the Reformation is forgot-ten in history. Even so, we must never forget the significance of it. We should be thankful that the church came to recognize then, as we do today, THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH and not be saved or stay saved by works or indulgences or any other way. “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household” (Acts 16:31).

Encouragingly yours, Russel R. Cook
