It is also called the house of the people.It has a maximum of 552 members which

includes 20 members fromUnion territories and two from AngloIndians. Each Loksabha is formed for afive year term. It can also be extended bythe proclamation of emergency for oneyear.

The Rajyasabha means the "Council of States". It is the upper house of theParliament of India. Membership is limitedto 250 members, 12 of whom are chosenby the President of India for their expertise in specific fields of art,literature, science, and social services.These members are known as nominatedmembers. The remainder of the body iselected by state and territoriallegislatures.Terms of office are for six years.

The World Bank estimates that 456 million Indians(42% of the total Indian population) now live under the global poverty line of $1.25 per day. Thismeans that a third of the global poor now reside

in India. The source for this was the 61st round of the

National Sample Survey (NSS) and the criterionused was monthly per capita consumptionexpenditure below Rs. 356.35 for rural areas andRs. 538.60 for urban areas. 75% of the poor are inrural areas.

The poverty level is below 10% in states like Delhi,Goa, and Punjab etc whereas it is below 50% inBihar (43) and Orissa (47). It is between 30-40% inNortheastern states of Assam, Tripura, andMehgalaya and in Southern states of TamilNaduand Uttar Pradesh.
