The POWER of Social The POWER of Social NetworksNetworks

Page 2: Power of Social Networks 2011

Social Networks exist before Social Networks exist before TechnologyTechnology

• It is necessary that the network actually exists, there must be a number of people willing to connect to the network.

• This can not be provided by some information and communication technology. Technologies can help articulate and animate a network, but can not create a network.

• Social networks are social, not technological.• Therefore, there is no use in trying to start a network by creating a list of e-

mails, registering people in a website, giving each person a blog, adding these blogs in the same virtual address, and calling this set of blogs a blogosphere.

• If a group of people want to connect to a network, all of these tools can be useful. If they do not want to, it is useless to register them and provide each of them with a login and password, nor even train them in using such tools.

President Luis UbiñasPresident Luis Ubiñas(Ford Foundation) (Ford Foundation)

“It's also abundantly clear that the use of technology for social good will not materialize

spontaneously, and it is by no means a certainty. It will happen only if we make a deliberate effort

to envision a role for technology in advancing social good, and then deliberately work to fulfill

that vision”.

• The ability of social networks (and self-organising groups) to do private, public and even civic good.

• The internet lowers the barriers to participation so much further, that the real surprise is that we don't do more.

• The opportunity before us , individually and collectively, is enormous; what we do with it will be largely determined by how well we are able to imagine and reward public creativity, participation, and sharing.

necessary part of our lives but also a force for good”.

Manuel CastellsManuel Castells about Tunis and Egypt about Tunis and Egypt

• It was not a revolution that hapened through the web. Nevertheless, without the web, this revolution would never had happened.

• Information and images about Tunis arrived through the net. Social networks were the platform for mobilization, coordination, solidarity, and popularization of the objective of ending with Mubarak. It soon went from the cyberspace to the urban space. Once in Tahrir square, ad many other places occupied in Alexandria, Suez and other cities, a self-organization dynamic was created without any previous structure, in solidarity with danger in daily survival.

Social Networks and DemocraciesSocial Networks and Democracies•Not even the young creators and founders of Social Networks like Twitter, YouTube and Facebook, were aware of what they were giving to the youth in this Era of Knowledge and Information, who now run after evil rulers, dictators, and power concentrators, which until now survived with promises of false citizenship.

•What we saw in Egypt and Tunis was the union of the upper middle class youth who also joined the poor and thus are rescuing the dignity of all those who truly want to contribute to their country and its people with Education, Training and Professional Qualification for everyone, in order to have the same opportunities as in democratic countries.

Avaaz—meaning "voice" in several European, Middle Eastern and Asian languages—launched in 2007 with a simple democratic mission: organize citizens of all nations to close the gap between the world we have and the world most people everywhere want.

AVAAZ.ORGAVAAZ.ORGAvaaz empowers millions of people from all walks of life to take action on pressing global, regional and national issues, from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. Our model of internet organising allows thousands of individual efforts, however small, to be rapidly combined into a powerful collective force.

Page 23: Power of Social Networks 2011

AVAAZ.ORGAVAAZ.ORGThe Avaaz community campaigns in 14 languages, served by a core team on 4 continents and thousands of volunteers. We take action -- signing petitions, funding media campaigns and direct actions, emailing, calling and lobbying governments, and organizing "offline" protests and events -- to ensure that the views and values of the world's people inform the decisions that affect us all.

Avaaz's priorities and how its Power Avaaz's priorities and how its Power comes from memberscomes from members

Each year, Avaaz sets overall priorities through all-member polls, and campaign ideas are polled and tested weekly to 10,000 (member random samples) and only initiatives that find a strong response are taken to scale. Campaigns that do reach the full membership are then super-charged by, often, hundreds of thousands of Avaaz members taking part within days or even hours.

Brazil Ficha Limpa - AVAAZ Brazil Ficha Limpa - AVAAZ The "clean record" law was a bold proposal that banned any politician convicted of crimes like corruption and money laundering from running for office. With nearly 25% of the Congress under investigation for corruption, most said it would never pass.

Avaaz launched the largest online campaign in Brazilian history, helping to build a petition of over 2 million signatures, 500,000 online actions, and tens of thousands of phone calls.

We fought corrupt congressmen daily as they tried every trick in the book to kill, delay, amend, and weaken the bill, and won the day every time. The bill passed Congress, and already over 330 candidates for office face disqualification.

One Brazilian member wrote to us when the law was passed, saying:

“I have never been as proud of the Brazilian people as I am today! Congratulations to all that have signed. Today I feel like an actual citizen with political power.”
