The computers on wheelsn (or COW) is a popular option across many facilities.

There are, however, some issues with this form of

point-of-care computing. Besides the issue ofbattery

life and charging(which usually happens in

hallways), carts have a large footprint in a room andare cumbersome to move around all day. Not to

mention that most hospitals have dead zones of

wireless connectivity. We actually visited a facility

that had colored tape on the floor to signify dead

    zones.

n Computer on wheels, a mobile charting cart used by

nurses or respiratory therapists that holds a laptop or

thin client PC where practioners can chart or makeentries in medical records. WOW - Workstation on

wheels. Point of care (POC)- Providing and charting

patient care at the bedside often using a wireless

connection set up by information service (IT).

n Nurses use the system to scan medication bar codes

    and patients' identification bracelets before

administering drugs to ensure that patients receive

the correct medication and dose. The computer will

alert nurses if there is an error

    Disadvantages:

n the mobility advantage of COWs wasmitigated by time and health

    factors.nurses moved the carts from

room to room, but because the carts

were cumbersome to move around and

because of concern about infection risk

    associated with movement.
