Iwascuriouswhy thewholeCamRinghad tobeable to swingbackandforth (thereby requiring the
SleeperSeal)inthispumpdesign. Itturnsoutthatthispumpisavariabledisplacementvanepump. The
CamRingslidesbackandforthtochangethevolume(displacement)ofthevanecavitiesandtherefore
controlthe
pump
pressure.
Many
power
steering
pumps
do
not
function
this
way.
Instead,
the
pump
just runsfullout (fixeddisplacement)and if thepressure is toohigh it is simplybypassedback to the
pump inputbythepressurecontrolvalve. InthisHondapump, itappearsthatwhenthepressuregets
toohigh,thepumpingcapacityitselfisreducedratherthansimplybypassingthepump.Thisisachieved
bythemovingcamringwhichreducesthepumpsdisplacement.
1.FullCapacityPumpingInthiscase,thecam
ringispushedbythespringallthewaytotheright
(bluearrow)whichresultsinlargevolumevane
cavitiesontheright.Asthepowersteeringfluidis
pushedbythevanesinthedirectionofthered
arrow,the
volume
of
each
vane
cavity
decreases.
Thisincreasesthepressureattheoutletunderthe
rotor.
2.ReducedCapacityPumpingIftheoutlet
pressuregetstoohigh,thePSfluidpressurepushes
theCamringtotheleft(bluearrow). Thisreduces
thevolumeofthevanecavitiesontherightand
reducesoutputpressure.Whentheoutput
pressuredrops
then
the
Cam
Ring
returns
to
the
higherdisplacementlocation(left).
Notice also that the PSfluid comes up through the holes in the rotor andpushes against the vanes
keepingthempressedagainstthecamring.

1.ThePressureControlCapis10mmHexandisquitetight. ItmightbehardtogetoutwithanAllen
wrench. IusedaHexsocketandbreakerbar.
2.ThePressureControlCapandPumpHousingCapareprettytighttogetout. Ifyoudonthaveavise
handy,itmaybeagoodideatobreaktheseloosewhilethepumpisstillonthecar(sinceitishardto
holdthepumpwhilelooseningtheseotherwise).
3.Thesealcanbeprettystuckinthere. Workitoutalittleatatimebygoingaroundthewhole
circumferenceoftheseal. Becarefulnottoscratchorgougethematingsurfaceofthesealwhile
removingit.
