5 DESIGN AND OPERATING PRINCIPLE

5.1 Functional diagram of the Unit is shown in Figure 1.

Sensors 1 and 2 are passive sensors with 4...20 mA output current signals; 1 are intrinsic barriers; 2 are current limiters; 3 are current converters; 4 is the power supply; RL1, RL2 are load resistance values; V1 and V2 are voltmeters.

Figure 1. Unit Functional Diagram

5.2 The Unit consists of: intrinsic barriers (the Barrier) that limits the electric power supplied to the hazardous area through circuitry connected to GOST 31610.11 and GOST 30852.13 electrical equipment; current limiters; current converters that convert 4...20 mA signals into 0...5, 0...20 mA output signals (non-conversion mode also available); and a power supply designed for converting 220 V mains voltage into stabilized DC voltage.

5.3 The intrinsic barrier is compliant with GOST 31610.0-2002 and GOST 31610.11 and is based on duplicated Zener diodes with serially-connected resistors and fuses. The intrinsic barrier cannot be disassembled.

Page 9: POWER SUPPLIES FOR SENSORS БПДМ-Ex...6.2 Maintenance staff requirements per GOST 31610.17. 8 6.3 In terms of electric-shock protection, the Unit is a Class 01 unit per GOST 12.2.007.0.

7

5.4 The intrinsic barrier contains the following functional ele-ments and nodes:

limiting resistors that determine the short-circuit current;

a group of limiting Zener diodes and diodes (for “ia” bar-riers, Zener diodes are duplicated) that determing the maximum idling voltage in IS circuits;

a fuse serially connected to resistive circuits. 5.5 Power specifications of all barrier resistors are aligned to the

regulated power reserve adopted for intrinsic safety. Diode-resistive or resistive circuits with fuses disconnect the IS circuit in case of emergency voltage at non-IS inputs. In these circuits, resistors limit the current passing through the fuse. If an AC voltage of up to 250 V is accidentally supplied to the voltage barrier, no arc effect occurs in the low-voltage fuse.

5.6 Electrical load of the intrinsic barrier components does not exceed 2/3 of its rated value for normal and emergency operations. The intrinsic elements are protected by a dielectric enclosure and have redundancy per GOST 31610.11 for “ia” and “ib” circuits. The dielectric strength of the transformer insulation between the primary winding and the secondary windings has passed 2,500 V AC tests per GOST 31610.11. Electric clearances, leakage paths, and the strength of insulation between electric elements and circuits are compliant with GOST 31610.11. Board conductor tracks and at-tachments are protected from the environmental by insulating var-nish. Maximum capacitance and inductance of the external barrier circuit for IIC and IIB explosive mixtures is configured with a mini-mum safety factor of 1.5 as per GOST 31610.11, see Table 1. Con-nectors and terminal blocks ensure that IS circuits remain in reliable permanent contact.

5.7 Overall and mounting dimensions of the Unit are given in Appendix A.

5.8 The front panel contains channel-status LEDs:

if on, the IS-circuit voltage is within normal range;

if off, channel failure has occurred.
