DropDown Menu The available options are grouped into logical

collections and the group names are displayed horizontally on the menu bar.

Typically, these menus are attached to a Window. DropDown menus can have toolbars and can

moved to any position within the application depending on the application settings.




Cascading DropDown Menu Cascading menu can display many more menu

options than a menu item in the DropDown menu using sub menus.

Cascading menu can be identified by the right arrow at the end of the menu item.




Popup Menu Popup menus are dynamic and context sensitive. Popup menus are invoked at the mouse pointer when clicked with right mouse button. Popup menu creation is same as DropDown menu. Popup menus are not attached to a window and are invoked from script.

Menu Properties Menu bar/ Item Name Accelerator Key Shortcut Key PowerTip MicroHelp Text




Menu bar/ Item Name ‘Name’ property is used in the script and is

never displayed to users. Name is automatically assigned by

PowerBuilder and can be changed at development time.

Once defined, name is locked and can be unlocked.




Accelerator Key Allows users to access menu items using

keyboard. Should be used in conjunction with Alt

key. Need to use ‘&’ (Ampersand) to define an

Accelerator key.




Shortcut Key Allows quicker access to menu items than

an Accelerator key. This functionality is beneficial to Keyboard

users. A shortcut key can be any alphabet with

combinations of Shift/Alt/Ctrl keys.




PowerTip Is the short length help displayed just

below the mouse pointer in yellow color when the mouse moves over a toolbar icon.

Feature introduced with version 4.0. A very useful feature when ‘MDI frame’

window is used instead of ‘MDI frame with Micro help’.




MicroHelp Is the long length help displayed on the

window status bar for each menu bar/item. Can be defined at design time or set at

run-time using SetMicroHelp() function. Useful only when ‘MDI frame with

MicroHelp’ type window is used.
