Thank you for making 2017 yet another remarkable year for Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club. 2017 marked 67 years of service for our Club at 135 Forest Avenue in Locust Valley. Our staff has done an incredible job at strengthening our programs for children of all ages.

In 2017, to build on the Club’s continued commitment to our mission, we added a Director of Programming and Professional Development and we enhanced our well established after school programs in Homework Help, Technology and the Arts, with several new additions:

• In the spring, we renovated our Teen Center adding computers, upgrading the furnishings, and creating new study space to enhance our Teen experience at the Club.

• In the summer, our Basketball Camp added college coaches and players to their roster of instructors to boost the development of our young athletes.

• In the fall, we expanded our traditional Athletics to reinforce our lessons in overall fitness and health, to include a mix of intramural and travel sports, and to build the overall confidence and a positive self-image for all our children.

• To complement our Homework Help and Power Hour, we offered a diverse range of enrichment programs in

the Arts, Technology and Science such as The World of Books, Human Body Detectives, and LEGO Robotics.

• Encouraging our kids to give back to the community, our teens volunteered more than 2000 hours through our Keystone and Torch Clubs for Animal Shelters, Wounded Warriors, Ronald McDonald House, and Habitat for Humanity, among others.

• Our Meal Program provided 20,000 snacks and 10,000 meals to make sure that every child could concentrate and enjoy their hours at the Club.

Thank you wholeheartedly for being part of the Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club family. We look forward to much more in 2018.

YOUTH OF THE YEAR

2017Dear Club Supporter,

My journey to the Club started with a change of scenery. When I was young, my family moved from Mexico City to Locust Valley.

When I first entered school in Locust Valley, it was very difficult for me to adjust. With both my parents working long hours, I started to go to Grenville Baker after school. Because my parents’ English was not strong, they knew they couldn’t help me with my homework. With the help of the Club’s ESL program, I learned English. I want to thank Seth and the other staff members who helped me in those early days and for making me feel welcome. Once I felt confident I was able to get more involved with other programs offered at the Club.

When I entered middle school, I chose to stay involved at the Club, becoming president of our Torch Club, our community service club. I met the teen director Stephanie Urio - my mentor, life coach and friend. In eighth grade, she helped me to apply and to win a Financial Literacy award. Stephanie believed in me and helped me to realize my potential.

With her encouragement, when I entered High school, I once again chose to stay involved. I joined the Keystone Club. Through Keystone, I discovered my two passions: helping people and seeing the world. I have completed over 100 hours of community service every year since the ninth grade. I received training in ESL to help others to gain confidence in the English language. I was chosen for the National Keystone Conference Steering Committee, was elected president of Keystone at the Club and helped plan and budget our club’s 2017 service trip to Panama. These experiences have given me confidence in myself and in my future.

My parents came to this country so that my sister and I could live a better life and to have the opportunity to get a college education, an opportunity they never had. I am now a freshman at Loyola University in Baltimore. All of this was possible because of the support from my Boys & Girls Club. Thank you to everyone for supporting this wonderful place. Without Grenville Baker who knows where I would be.
