Page 6: Powerful Resumes

A Résumé is not:

A chronological (boring) history of your qualifications, your employment experience,

with a few achievements. This type of document does little to

showcase your personal brand, your professionalism and more importantly, the

value you offer the organisation.

Page 7: Powerful Resumes

Common Résumé Blunders

• Too broad; not focused on job target• Uninspiring content; features (functions)

rather than benefits (results)• One style fits all template• Irrelevant information that does little to

strengthen application• Incorrect résumé format• Grammatical errors / typos

Page 8: Powerful Resumes

What is a Résumé?

Your résumé:• Is a marketing / promotional tool;• Should aim to capture and maintain the

reader’s attention;• Should promote your skills in relation to

the position and organisation’s needs.

The product is ‘you’ – the potential buyer is the ‘employer’. Sell it – don’t tell it!

Page 9: Powerful Resumes

Focus, Focus, Focus

To market a product effectively you must:• Understand the product’s unique qualities

and benefits;• Understand the buyer’s needs;• Portray the product’s unique qualities

as benefits to the potential buyer’s needs

Page 10: Powerful Resumes

Focus, Focus, Focus – cont’d

Compared to résumé writing you must:• Understand your strengths and skills [and

how they can benefit the company];• Understand the company’s needs;• Position your résumé from a results-driven

perspective so that it states your strengths and skills as a ‘benefit’ for the company.

Communicate your personal brand!
