Combining adjustable speed drive and power quality solutions
For municipal and industrial pumping applications, the Square D® brand PowerGard™ Series C 18-Pulse enclosed drive controller features the new Telemecanique® brand Altivar® 61 or 71 adjustable frequency drives/power converters. Schneider Electric’s experience and expertise in power distribution and power quality measurement are combined with solid state motor control. The result: a robust, packaged, adjustable speed drive with a clean power solution.
PowerGard 18-Pulse drives are ideal for installations specifying “clean power” low harmonic content in compliance with IEEE 519 guidelines for harmonic mitigation. PowerGard 18-Pulse drives are UL 508C listed and are available in Type 1 general purpose or with fan filter options. PowerGard 18-Pulse drives are low voltage products available in the following ratings:
Constant torque (heavy duty ratings – 150% current limit)n Altivar 71 power convertern 40 HP to 450 HP, 460 V
Variable torque (normal duty ratings – 110% current limit)n Altivar 61 power convertern 50 HP to 500 HP, 460 V Technology makes a difference
Schneider Electric uses a patented 18-Pulse technology designed to meet IEEE 519 guidelines for harmonic control in electrical power systems. Using this technology enables PowerGard 18-Pulse drives to achieve in excess of 95% cancellation of characteristic harmonic currents. Other multi-pulse technologies vary greatly in design and the effectivity of their cancellation techniques. Many multi-pulse drives do not provide balanced cancellation of harmonic currents, which can result in only marginal harmonic mitigation.
One of many harmonic mitigation strategies
With extensive power management and motor control experience, Schneider Electric provides an array of harmonic solutions using a true cost vs. benefit approach to harmonic mitigation. This proactive approach helps users tailor the correct solution ranging from “C-less” technology to active harmonic filtering for an entire system. The result is a cost-effective balance of:
n Input (RMS) current reductionn Branch circuit conductor sizingn Equipment sizen Installation costn IEEE 519 compliance

Seismic qualification for new generation of building codes1st Drive manufacturer to meet this criteria!
All PowerGard Series C 18-Pulse enclosed drive controllers meet IBC and ASCE 7 seismic qualification requirements in accordance with the ICC ES AC156 shaker table testing protocol. Many states and jurisdictions are beginning enforcement of the seismic guidelines for installed equipment contained in the IBC. The PowerGard Series C 18-Pulse enclosed drive controllers were subjected to actual shaker table tests, not just theoretical calculations for seismic ratings or obsolete requirements of the UBC. This enclosed drive controller meets the structural integrity requirements when installed to our published guidelines, and can be specified for use in applications that require an Ip = 1.5, which means operational status can be restored after a seismic event.
