The December

Coach of the

M o n t h i s

Carlos Arroyo.

He is a team

coach. Coach

Carlos has

been coaching

at Powerhouse Gymnastics

for 8 months, and has been

coaching a total of 31 years.

He’s come a long way since

being bitten by the gymnastics

bug after watching the 1976

Summer Olympics, He

started classes early, took

until 8th grade, and tumbled

in high school.

Coach Carlos has a BA in

Anthropology from the

University of Texas at San

Antonio and an Instructor

cer t i f i c a te f rom USA

Gymnastics University. He

also has U101: Safety and Risk

Management and Professional

Deve lopment Leve l 1

certificates, and is first aid

certified.

Born in September, Coach

Carlos is a Virgo. He

considers himself an Army

brat and has lived in Japan and

Panama. In 1980, and in 8th

grade, he moved with his

family to San Antonio. Coach

Carlos graduated from

Winston Churchill High

School in 1985 and enlisted in

the United States Air Force in

1 9 8 6 . H i s b i g g e s t

accomplishment was being

commissioned as an USAF

officer after completing

ROTC.

In addition to serving in three

wars, he lived and visited over

30 countries, including: Saudi

Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Italy,

Spain, France, Romania,

Russia, Austria, Greece,

Korea and Japan. During his

tour in Germany, he was the

Consultant to the US Embassy

to NATO. He confidently can

speak two languages and

understand five.

In 1995, Coach Carlos

married his long-lost 8th

grade sweetheart, Michelle.

They have two children:

Kendall, a junior at Angelo

State University, and Ethan, a

Senior at O’Connor High

School.

As a coach, he loves all the

events equally, but if he had to

pick one event, it would be

bars. It is the first event he

felt comfortable coaching, and

Feature Coach—Carlos Arroyo

Powerhouse Gymnastics News

Coach Carlos

is the event he has had the

most success. “Getting a

gymnast to overcome their

fears in swinging the bars, and

then to see them have success

on them motivates me to teach

them more.” Coach Carlos also

enjoys the progressions of skills

on bars and how you can visibly

see the gymnast transform and

increase their capacity to learn

new skills.

Coach Car lo s be l i e ves

gymnastics is “the ability to

make an impact on young lives.

As coaches, we have the honor

o f t e a c h i n g y o u n g ,

impressionable, and amazing

kids life skills that will stay with

them into the future. Teaching

kids to face their fears and

overcome obstacles with hard

w o r k , i n t e g r i t y a n d

perseverance is what I live for. I

believe a coach/gymnast

relationship is one of the

strongest in the sporting world.

I have had the privilege of

keeping in contact with the

majority of the girls I have

coached throughout the years.

Because of my military career

I’ve coached in Texas, New

Mexico, Washington and

Germany.”

Gymnastics Jokes What do gymnasts, acrobats, and bananas have in common? They can all do the splits.

Why do choreographers charge so much for their music and work? Because the musical scale

begins and ends with ‘dough.’

How long does it take for the gymnast to get to class? A split second!

Where do bad gymnasts go? Behind parallel bar!

What is a gym coach’s favorite color? Yeller

A pommel horse walks into a parallel bar. The barman says, “Is this a joke about gymnastics?”

The horse beams.

“A gymnast walks into a bar. She gets a two-point deduction and ruins her chances of a medal.”

My coach is the most even-tempered man in the world – he’s always mad.
