I am Yadu Pokhrel. I received my Masters in 2008
and PhD in 2011 from the University of Tokyo.
After that, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher
for six months at Hokkaido University and then
moved to the United States. I currently work as an
Associate Professor at Michigan State University. I
conduct research on water resource assessment
and impacts of climate change on water resources.
I teach classes on Engineering Hydrology and
Water Resources Modeling. More information
about my work can be found at:

I had a wonderful time living in Japan for more
than five years. I was back in Tokyo in 2015 and
2017, and plan to visit again in 2020!

I entered PASCO Corporation in 2009 after completing my Ph.D.program at the Regional Planning and Information Laboratory.PASCO was originally an aerial surveying company. Now thecompany is constantly in pursuit of the most advancedtechnologies in the areas of the acquisition and processing ofgeospatial information. Based on the results obtained throughthe active utilization of these technologies, we provide productsand services that underpin secure and comfortable lives for thepeople around the world.
I belong to the R&D center in PASCO. The major purpose of myresearch is to improve the efficiencies of the acquisition andprocessing of geospatial information by automatizing manualtasks using the latest technology.
I think the merit of researching in a company is that you candirectly communicate with the users of the systems and toolsthat you have developed. In addition, you can experience theentire research process, such as the analysis of the demands infield departments, selection of research themes, technologydevelopment, improvement of developed tools and systemsbased on the feedback from users. If you are interested inapplied research, working in the research department of acompany may be a good option.

My hobbies are mountain climbing and skiing. Duringthe summer and autumn holidays, I often go climbingwith my friends if the weather is nice.
The mountain trails in Japan are well maintained so thatyou can climb safely. You can feel a sense ofaccomplishment when you climb to the summit, andyou can enjoy a wonderful view from the top when theweather is nice. It is very pleasant to exercisesurrounded by nature and good for your health too. Thebeer you drink at the top is the best, and the cupnoodle feels several times more delicious than usual.
There are 100 famous mountains in Japan, and I haveclimbed 22 of them so far. This year, I am very happythat I was able to climb Mt. Yarigatake, which I havealways admired. There are many wonderful mountainsnear Tokyo, so please try some out. But, before youbegin climbing, I suggest that you first learn basicmountain climbing knowledge and manners.
My relaxing time!

Even though it was a busy weekday, the top
management and young officers sacrificed their time
to discuss with us. They shared their vision and
action plan in order for us to benefit from their
professional experience as civil engineers in MLIT.

Visit!MLIT Lunch Session
Discussions centered around typical
problems that everyone in civil engineering
field has faced and finding potential solutions
to those problems. We had an opportunity to
meet with the young officers and discuss in
small groups. In my case, I talked with
one officer who is working in the
International Section and another working in
the Strategic Planning Section. The issues
related to Japan were discussed during this
time.
Group chattering!
Thank you very much for the wonderful opportunity to meet top
management and young officers at MLAT. To learn from their vision,
strategies and action plans has inspired us to find solutions for our own
problems. As I am a civil engineer in the Department of Highways,
Thailand. I will do my best in my research and take this knowledge
to develop my country and and improve the lives of people there. I hope
that we will have the chance to collaborate and share knowledge
together again.

Mr. Yamada, Vice Minister of Engineering
Affairs came to the room for greetings.
It was a great opportunity to learn about
the vision of MLIT and discuss the hot
issues which MLIT highlight in their action
plan.
One of the important concerns of MLIT is
the budget that Japanese government has
to support “Disaster Recovery” – a lesson
learned from Kansai Airport 2018.
How to deal with disasters is also an
important issue in order to help the public.
