UNITED NATIONS ORGANIZATION -

UNO

The United Nations Organization cameinto existence in October 24 , 1945.It isthe dream and aspiration of theconscience of the world for arepresentative body. The UNO wasformed as the one organization onwhich will represent the whole ofmankind and will preserve peace andsecurity.

OBJECTIVES OF THE UNITED NATIONS

1. Protect the future generation from the fear of war.2. Ensure human rights and protect the rights of nations ,

small and large alike.3. Create circumstances that respect international laws and

agreements that aim at social progress and higherstandards of life.

4. Promote relationship based on tolerance and peacebetween neighbouring states.

5. To co-operate for world peace and security.6. To ensure not to use military forces for purposes other than

welfare of the whole mankind.7. To make use of international arrangements only for the

economic and social progress of mankind.

STRUCTURE OF THE UNITED NATIONS

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

United Nations Generalassembly is known as parliament ofNations . It has to assemble at leastonce in a year. Each member statecan send a team of 5 representatives,but in the proceedings of theAssembly a member can cast onlyone vote.

THE SECURITY COUNCIL

The power to take policy decisionsin matters relating to maintenance ofinternational peace and security isvested with the security council. Itsheadquarters is in New York . TheSecurity Council composed of 15members have 10 non-permanent and 5permanent members . Non-permanentmembers are elected for a period of 2years.

THE SECRETARIAT

Secretariat has the responsibility tocarry out outline administrativefunctions of the United Nations . Itsheadquarters is in New York . Secretariatimplements the decisions of the GeneralAssembly, the Security Council andother organs of the United Nations asrout line administrative work.

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL

The organs of the United Nationsco-ordinates the activities that comeunder the UN such as health,employment, human rights etc. It has 54members work under the control of theUN General Assembly. Headquarters isin New York.

TRUSTEESHIP COUNCIL

Trusteeship Council has the duty ofcouncil, supervision, and preparation ofthe trust territories for self government.The five permanent members of theSecurity Council are the members of theTrusteeship Council. The headquartersof Trusteeship Council in New York.

INTERNATIONAL COURT OFJUSTICE

The International Court of Justicewith headquarters at the Hague,Netherlands has 15 judges. Judges areelected for a period of 9 years by theGeneral Assembly and the SecurityCouncil. Disputes between states thatare brought before the court can bedecided by this court.
