COLOR: endless boundaries
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Developing color in design projects is very much a global affair, there are no boundaries of where inspiration originates. No longer right or wrong colors; all types of color exploration exists in today’s internet world. As interiors’ functions blur, ‘resimmercial’ color palettes influence users at home, in commercial spaces and abroad during travel. This session discusses the global color tendencies, and how cruise lines use color today and in tomorrow’s marine environments.

Presentation Notes
My Global Color Overview is based on the Formica Group’s Bi-Annual forecast created by our international designers in Asia, Europe, North America in Fall 2017. Our Future Vision forecast explores future topics across a full spectrum of the design industry to see how color preferences shift for interiors. First, I will outline the trend drivers, or macro trends. I will then dive into the three color stories: Engineered Design, No Boundaries and Fluidity. Each story features a color palette that we researched with over 100 interior designers and architects in 20 international cities, early winter 2018. Glenda will bring all this international color into focus with Color Themes important for the Cruise Interiors market.

Presentation Notes
Its important to understand Trend Drivers from technology innovations, interior design advances and architectural projects, to consider how these overarching elements will influence and inspire the near future of Color & Design. The concept of Sensory Spaces is growing as Designers are taking a new holistic approach. We seek to connect with our surroundings in a way that appeals to all of our senses. Buildings and spaces are becoming tech driven and look to mimic circadian rhythms. Designers are exploring human-centric design and how light can affect our environments.

Presentation Notes
As urban living becomes increasingly prevalent, Controlled Nature becomes more important as designers investigate how we connect with nature in the built environment. Biophilic design recognizes the role of plants in our wellbeing; because surrounded by them, we are healthier, happier, and even our performance is enhanced.

Presentation Notes
The Return of the Expert is our next trend driver. In a world impacted by the internet’s overload of information ‘fake news’, we are seeking expert knowledge and authenticity. Real skills are becoming important - with engineers, scientists and craftsman re-taking their place at the forefront of the design world.
With the Phygital trend driver, we discover a merging of physical and digital worlds in this era of rapid and continual change. Visions of the future are increasingly diverse, and we are challenged with how to design for tomorrow.

Presentation Notes
Our final trend driver, Nomadic life shows that as technology gives rise to synthetic experiences, we yearn for something more authentic and meaningful. We reconsider the way we live and work, to reconnect with the natural world while at work. With a growing number of people choosing a lifestyle that enables working remotely and traveling limitlessly, design mirrors these changes.
Looking for ‘future proof’ solutions is central to the story of Engineered Design. In a time of flux, the answers lie in keeping informed and one step ahead with rational intelligent yet creative solutions.

Let us now look to the color palette of Engineered Design, which references the increasingly automated and controlled world that surrounds us. There is a bold synthetic and technical feel to the Engineered Design palette with bright shades grounded by sophisticated greys and earthtones.
For Surfaces, designers seek to make environments more livable by de-cluttering the excess. Using bold graphic shapes, we see a precise approach to pattern that results in synthetic perfection.
Engineered Design pushes the boundaries of construction and embraces technical advancements in intelligent materials. 3D printing enables an engineered and synthetic aesthetic with new possibilities for design-makers.
For Woods, we see interlocking shapes and modular elements that are engineered to allow for intelligent combinations. This can be in natural monochromatic materials…..
Also brightly colored hues to create intriguing patterns. The Engineered Design story is inventive and thought provoking, the user is the designer using multi-dimensional surfaces.
No Boundaries is the color trend story of the modern day nomad. The way we live is changing, we look to flexible, modular housing and co-working communities that allow more freedom to explore. Material needs are left behind for something altogether more experiential yet natural.
We take inspiration from our global village. Connected by easy travel, social media and electronic communication, we have become a single community. No Boundaries imagines traveling as a lifestyle, where we live abroad, work remotely and explore the four corners of the world. Seeking unique adventurous experiences and a more natural connection with our world, we embrace a more nomadic way of life.

Presentation Notes
With a palette evoking sky, sea and earth; No Boundaries reflects an organic approach using only the most essential elements. Grounded in nature, earth tones and clear ocean blues contrast with pops of soft shell and purples to evoke a new natural organic feeling.
For Surfaces, the art of bringing the organic world to the inside is key. No Boundaries shows colors and materials in an authentic interpretation of nature. A mix of nature-inspired colors, patterns and surface treatments.
The surface treatments accompanying this palette balance mixed materials. Curved graphic shapes, powder coated metals and refined natural finishes combine with untreated woods and exposed concrete to bring a sense of the outdoor landscape to interior environments.
The beauty of Wood lies in its versatility and the innovative ways in which it can be used in applications. Soft natural shapes enhance and emphasize the adaptability of this material. Reusing wood in unique ways is innovative and adventurous.
Our final color trend story is Fluidity, a blend of the technology and digital world with a human-centered sensory approach. Digital dominance is challenged by designers embracing human senses of sound, sight, touch and taste. Immersive building environments focus on our human needs by mimicking our circadian rhythms, improving the air we breathe and cocooning us in sensorial comfort.
The Fluidity theme is in response to an increasingly complex digital landscape, where we seek a more conscious state of being. There is a dreamy quality, a softness and introspective feel that allows us to put aside busy thoughts and access our emotions. Advances in technology and the blurring of boundaries between the digital and physical, gives rise to this new generation of design possibilities.

Presentation Notes
The color palette that accompanies Fluidity is inspired by materials and colors that heighten sensorial awareness. Designers are creating environments that support and enhance physical and mental well-being. Soft and ethereal, the colors of Fluidity blend seamlessly with a variety of materials and balanced color combinations. Muted and weightless tones of color tinted neutrals are offset with contrasting orange and iridescent effects, all grounded by gray.
For Surfaces, Fluidity emphasizes an atmospheric mix of color and blurring pattern. Materials that have a slightly synthetic feel using light and reflection for an ethereal quality. Dreamy and transparent, liquid motion is captured in acrylic, tinted glass effects and ceramic treatments. Bleeding hues of color create a notion of ethereal movement.

Surface treatments from brushed metal to layered colored transparencies showcase innovative palette combinations. With a synthetic feel, these treatments have a dreamy quality, using light and reflection to interact with our senses.
Tactile, delicate and soft finishes push the boundaries of what is possible with woods. New wood finishing techniques allow designers to embrace endless innovation and exploration driven by a desire for sensorial experiences.
Soft matte wood finishes are blended with pastel hues for future forward designs. Softly curved silhouettes are inventive with new material experiments.

To finish out my global color overview, I want to share our research results by Color Trend Theme. Note that I have a 4th palette that our designers wanted to test at the last minute called Variations of Black in blackened Hunter, Teal, Violet and Burgundy. This palette was top in Europe vs NA and Asia leaned towards the natural No Boundaries theme. Asia took the biggest chance with our futuristic Fluidity trend. Brights, always a topic for pops of color and therefore maybe less usage, surveyed towards least preferred.
