Thetestisgenerallydoneatone and five minutes after birth,andmayberepeatedlaterifthescoreisandremainslow.
• Apgarscores7andabovearegenerallynormal,• Apgarscores4to6fairlylow,• Apgarscores3andbelowaregenerallyregardedascriticallylow.
AnApgar Timer willsoundabuzzerforthedurationof3secondsatintervalsof1, 5, and 10 minutes,therebysupportingtheusertotaketheApgarscoresatpreciseintervals.
Alowscoreontheone-minutetestmayshowthattheneonaterequiresmedicalattentionbutdoesnotnecessarilyindicatealong-termproblem,particularlyifthescoreimprovesatthefive-minutetest.AnApgarscorethatremainsbelow3atlatertimes—suchas10,15,or30minutes—mayindicatelonger-termneurologicaldamage.
NotthattheApgartest'spurposeistodeterminequicklywhetheranew-bornneedsimmediatemedicalcare.Itisnotdesignedtopredictlongtermhealthissues.

TheBassinetsideandfrontpanelsmaybefoldeddowntopermitmaximumaccesstotheinfant.Themattressmaybetiltedupintherearata5or10degreeangle.Openingsareprovidedoneachsideofthebassinetfortheinsertionofan(optional)X-rayCassetteTray.

High Temperature Alarm:whenskintemperatureexceeds39.0OCtheheaterisautomaticallyturnedoffandanalarmisgiven.
Probe fail Alarm:iftheSkinTemperatureProbefails(short-circuitedoropen).
Apgar Timer:thetimerwillshowelapsedminutesandsecondsandtheaudiblealarmwillsoundatthe1,5and10minuteApgartimeintervals.
Baby Temperature Alarm:whenthetemperaturesensedbytheSkinTemperatureProbeis1OCaboveor1OCbelowtheselectedSetTemperatureDisplaysetting.
Power Fail Alarm:ifthePowerisinterruptedwhilethecontrollerison.
System Fail Alarm:ifaninternalmalfunctionisdetected;anerrorcodemaybedisplayed.
Blender Differential Bypass Alarm:willsoundwhenthepressuredifferentialbetweenO2andAirsuppliesexceeds20psi.Whenthisoccurs,theblenderwillcontinuetosupplywhichevergasisatthehigherpressure:either100%airor100%Oxygen.

Trouble shooting: temperature measurement

Thetemperature probe isafrequentproblem.Thetechnologyintheprobeissimple;typicallyjustathermistor.However,determiningtheexacttypeandresistanceofthermistorrequiresdatafromthemanufacturer.Ifthisdatacanbeobtained,thanareplacementprobecanbemanufacturedfromastandardthermistorandtheproperconnector.Withoutthemanufacturer’sdata,itcanbeimpossibletoconstructtheprobe.
Apossiblesolutiontoamissingthermistorprobeistoplaceaknown,fixedresistorinitsplace,essentiallyforcingthedevicetooperateinmanual mode.Apotentiometercanbeusedtodeterminethevalueofresistancethatisrequiredtoforcethelightstocomeon.
Thermocouple probes aresometimesusedonwarmingunits,inwhichcasearesistancewillnotsubstitutefortheprobe.Avoltagesourcemightwork,however.Usingapotentiometer,abatteryandafixedresistor,avoltagedividercansometimesbecreatedandadjusteduntilthewarmingunitcomeson.Sincethedeviceisnowinmanualmode,careshouldbeusedtoinsurethatthepatient’stemperatureiscarefullymonitored.
