Today we are going to learn…
• How to construct a sentence.
• How to write a Haiku Poem.

Sentence• A sentence is a group of words
that tells a complete thought.
• Example:
• Billy likes to play football.

The Start and End of a Sentence
• All sentences must begin with a
capital letter.
• Example: Billy likes to play football.
• All sentences must end with a end mark.
• Example: Do you want to go to the zoo?
The Subject of a Sentence• The subject • This tells who or what the
sentence is about. • Usually at the beginning of a
sentence.• Can be one or more words.

The Subject• Example:
• --- Emma likes to cook.• In this sentence Emma is the subject.
• Why is Emma the subject?• Because the sentence is about Emma.
• A question to ask to help you find the subject is…
• Who likes to cook?• Emma likes to cook.

The Predicate of a Sentence
• The Predicate• Tells what happened in the
sentence.
• Usually what the sentence is or what its about.
The Predicate• Example:
• Maria likes to sew clothes.• In this sentence “sew clothes” is the
predicate.• “Sewing clothes” is the predicate
because it is what Maria likes to do.
• The question to ask yourself is what does Maria like to?
• Maria likes to “sew clothes.”
Practice• My cat likes to eat cat treats.
• What does my cat like to do?
• My cat likes to “eat cat treats.”

Haiku Poems
• Haiku poems consist of three lines.
• The first and last lines of a Haiku have five syllables.
• The middle line has seven syllables.
• They hardly ever rhyme.
Syllables• A syllable is part of a word
pronounced as a unit.
• Examples:
• The word Haiku has two syllables.
• Hai-ku
• The word introduction has four syllables.
• In-tro-duc-tion.
Haiku’s
• This is an example of a haiku that will help you remember what needs to be included in a Haiku.
• Example:• I am first with five
Then seven in the middle
Five again to end.
Haiku Poems
• Haiku’s are short poems.
• Haiku’s are usually written about animals or seasons.
