THE USE OF PPE• Gloves – Use when touching blood, body fluids,

secretions, excretions, contaminated items; for touching mucus membranes and nonintact skin.

• Gowns – Use during procedures and patient care activities when contact of clothing/ exposed skin with blood/body fluids, secretions, or excretions is anticipated.

• Mask, goggles or face shield – Use during patient care activities likely to generate splashes or sprays of blood, body fluids, secretions, or excretions

DIRECT PATIENT EXPOSURE:

Contact with blood; contact with

mucous membrane and with non-intact skin; potential presence of

highly infectious and dangerous organism; epidemic or emergency

situations; IV insertion and removal; drawing blood; discontinuation

of venous line; pelvic and vaginal examination; suctioning non-closed

systems of endotracheal tubes

INDIRECT PATIENT EXPOSURE:

Emptying emesis basins; handling/cleaning instruments; handling waste; cleaning

up spills of body fluids

How to Don Gloves

• Don gloves last

• Select correct type and

size

• Insert hands into gloves

• Extend gloves over

isolation gown cuffs

How to Remove Gloves

(1)1. Grasp outside edge near wrist.

2. Peel away from hand, turning glove

inside-out.

3. Hold in opposite gloved hand.

How to Remove Gloves

(2)1. Slide ungloved finger under the wrist of

the remaining glove

2. Peel off from inside, creating a bag for

both gloves.

3. Discard.

-Remove the gloves to perform hand hygiene when an

indication occurs while wearing gloves

-Discard gloves after each task and clean your hand –

gloves may carry germs

- Wear gloves only when indicating to Standard and

Contact precautions, otherwise they become a major

risk for germ transmission

How to Safely Use PPE

Keep gloved hands away from face.

Avoid touching or adjusting other PPE.

Remove gloves if they become torn; perform hand

hygiene before donning new gloves.

Limit surfaces and items touched to avoid

contamination.
