The holiday season
has arrived and I wish
you all a very happy
Thanksgiving.
Whether you are in a
studio or working out of
your home, it is not easy
to run a business in this
tough economy. There
are definite advantages to not working out
of your home, but the costs of the alternative
can be prohibitive.
I have worked out of a studio in San
Carlos for the last 25 years. Even during a
strong economy I had to change locations
within San Carlos several times because the
landlord had raised my rent so high that I
could not make a profit.
After the recent economic downturn,
someone asked me how much time I actually
spend in the camera room and my answer
was about one hour every other day. Now
four of us are sharing one studio and I am no
longer working just to support my landlord.
It works out very well and all of us still have
money in our pockets. Since we are in the
studio together, we share our knowledge and
help each other to grow. We do not act as
competitors. This is a benefit I had not even
thought of when deciding to share a studio.
One of the photographers at this studio
is leaving. This opening has created an
opportunity for another photographer to join
us. If you are ready to improve your bottom
line in this way, please let me know.

Mission StatementPPGBA exists to support and encourage the professional, artistic and educational growth of its members; to promote public awareness
of the profession; and to provide a forum of fellowship and exchange of ideas in an open and friendly atmosphere.
Big Thanks from PPGBA to Joerg Lehmann, Ph.D., CPP, Cr.Photog., BFF
I really want to take this
opportunity to send out a
big thank you to one of our
very dedicated members
and past PPGBA president,
Joerg Lehmann! As of the
middle of October, he has embarked on an
exciting new opportunity in Melbourne,
Australia. We wish Joerg, his wife, Brita,
and their 3 children, Ben, Jacob, and baby
Joanna all the best in their new adventures
“down under!” I know I speak for many
friends of Joerg’s when I say, “we’ll miss
you around here,
mate!” Your years of
dedicated service to our
organization is much
appreciated, and we
hope you come back
to the US, at least for a
visit or two!
One of the first things I noticed about
Joerg when I first met him was his warm
personality, always willing to share, help
and explore photography! We worked as
staff at Golden Gate School, served on
the PPGBA Board of Directors, taught
a Super Monday together, as well as a
few other workshops, and I learned so
much about lighting from him, as did
many photographers throughout the state,
including many of our own members. My
work is notably improved to this day due
to the times we have worked together over
the past 8 years or so. I am lucky to call
such a terrific person my friend. We have
shot many weddings together, and he
has been at the top of my list whenever I
need someone to shoot with, or provide
lighting consultations, and his attention
to detail is second to none. Plus - as a
great bonus, we always have an absolute
blast shooting together (see photo to the
left!!!)
What some of you may not know about
Dr. Joerg is that in addition to his talents
as a photographer, teacher and mentor, he
is also a medical physicist, and has been
working with radiation oncology in cancer
treatment for many years. When my sister
in law was diagnosed with breast cancer,
he was an amazing support for my family,
pointing us in toward an excellent center
for her treatment. It is this “day job” thing
that brings him to Australia, though I am
sure that there will be many photographic
adventures that await him there as well.
Especially since our mutual good friend,
photographer Mercury Megaloudis, has
promised to take good care of him.
Take care, my friend, and watch out for
those kangaroos... I hear they can be as big
as camels...

Craig Lee is an award winning photojournalist with experience photographing people, food, wine and lifestyle images. Based in San Francisco, California, Craig worked as a photojournalist for the San Francisco Examiner and the San Francisco Chronicle.
He continues to freelance with them, as well as for multliple national newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Magazine and Sunset Magazine. His work has earned Craig recognition from the National Press Photographers Association, Pictures of the Year, Association of Food Journalist, the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association and the APA Something Personal Show.
Craig’s photography work helped earned the San Francisco Chronicle recognition as the best Food and Wine section in the nation by the James Beard Foundation for the first time ever in 2004, and repeating in 2006, 2007 and 2011.
More of Craig’s work can be seen at: http://craigleephoto.com/
Dear fellow PPGBA’ers,
I will be speaking about my background as a newspaper photojournalist and a photographer in the culinary food scene. The Bay Area is one of the major food places in the world where quality is strived for at a high level.
I will talk about concept ideas for illustrations and working with designers and editors. I will talk about the challenges of making food look good. Sometimes it may look deceivingly simple. I will talk about photographing people and portraits together with food.
Hope to see everyone there!
–Craig
The display and refreshments will be held from 7:00 – 8:00 pm and 9:00 – 10:00 pm.
NOTE: There will be no print competition this month.

HULLS – Exhibition
HULLS: The Art of Decay in San Francisco opens November 2 at Dickerman Prints Gallery, 3180 17th Street in San Francisco.
Photographed from the dynamic vantage point of a tugboat’s deck - Jan Tiura’s Hulls is an up-close character study of working vessels from around the world by the first female tugboat captain in San Francisco Bay history.
During a career that has spanned 35 years as a US Coast Guard-licensed tugboat captain, Tiura has driven every type of tug from dinky single-screw tugs to towering pusher boats with enough horsepower to tow Alcatraz off its moorings.
From Tiura’s unique vantage point on her tugboat’s deck, lines, shapes and colors take on a painterly quality. Through her images, Tiura examines the intersection of form, function and the fury of the sea.
HULLS marks the first time these images are on display together as custom-printed photographic C-prints: collaboratively prepared by Tiura and Seth Dickerman. Working side-by-side, these two artists transformed a series of low-resolution files into large-format exhibition prints of the highest quality: a testament what one can create using modern photographic technology.
HULLS will be on display through Friday, December 11, the gallery is open weekdays from 10 am – 6 pm, days a week by appointment or for more information, please visit http://www.dickermanprints.com/hulls-jantiura.html
Marathon’s New Birthday ProgramMarathon Press is offering a brand-new
Birthday Marketing Campaign for children ages 1-5. It is a ZIP Code-protected program, meaning that only one studio in a given market area can use it. This compelling, affordable campaign features two unique mailing pieces, which assure that your message definitely will be read. • The first mailing consists of a
distinctive 2-part marketing piece — a fold-out card and a carrier. The card must be removed from its carrier and opened in order to be viewed and read, and parents can't resist opening something that reminds them about their child's upcoming birthday. Once opened, the eye-catching graphics will hold parents' attention as they see your images and read your specific marketing message and special offer.
• Two weeks later, parents will receive a follow-up post card featuring the same graphics — just the type of repetition you need to get your message noticed!
The charming graphics are designed to complement any style of children's photography. As an action-oriented campaign, not an overall branding strategy, each mailing nonetheless strongly reflects your business identity by displaying your portraits, studio identity elements, and marketing message.
What's more, you can add a FREE blogsite web presence that reflects the same graphic style that parents responded to in your mailings!
You decide how many mailings you wish to do each month, based on ZIP Code selection and household income, then Marathon takes it from there by sending the mailings on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. Think of the time you’ll save and the impression you’ll make as your prospects receive highly professional mailings from your business! Imagine how much parents will appreciate being reminded that it's time to update their child's portrait! You can even add parents of children in your own database if you wish.
You pay only $2.29 per prospect for printing, processing and posting both mailings (with customized inserts), including list selection, postage, and Birthday Blogsite. To register, you must pay a one-time fee of $199…however, if you act NOW, while most ZIP Codes are available, you’ll pay only $59!
For more information on this exciting program, visit https://www.marathonpress.com/children-birthday-program/. To learn whether your ZIP Code is available, call a Marathon Account Representative today at 800/228.0629!
