Micro CHP boiler Vitotwin 300-W:Generate power while you heat

Become independent of ever rising electricity prices. The Vitotwin 300-W micro CHP boiler generates heat and power.

Energy prices have more than doubled over the past ten years, and it is highly unlikely that they will fall in the future. Quite the contrary, as resources become more scarce, it is expected that energy costs will continue to rise. This brochure contains information about an innovative way to generate power that can help you to become more independent of these rising prices. It describes a heating system that generates heat and power simultaneously – the combined heat and power boiler for detached and two-family houses.

Frugal, efficient and environmentally responsible – CHP boilers from Viessmann Firstly, the Vitotwin 300-W micro CHP boiler generates electrical power – one of the most important forms of energy used today. Secondly, the Vitotwin 300-W utilises the heat produced as a by-product of power generation for central heating and DHW heating. Not only does that reduce emissions, it also saves up to 20 percent primary energy.

Apart from its savings potential, micro CHP boilers also offer you the opportunity of earning a significant amount of money. Your energy supply utility will reimburse you for every kilowatt you export to the grid. In addition, you benefit from subsidies offered by governments for this energy efficient technology.

Specifically designed to meet the requirements of modernisation: the Vitotwin 300-WWith the Vitotwin 300-W, Viessmann is one of the first manufacturers to offer a CHP boiler that is precisely tailored to the demands of detached and two-family houses. It is both compact and powerful, making it an ideal choice for modernisation projects.

Power generation

It's quite simple really – generate power while you heat

This is the normal process: you buy electricity and use it to generate heat in your boiler. Why not generate both yourself, with a heating system that not only delivers heat but also power?

Have your own power station at home During conventional power generation in central power stations, heat is created that is simply lost as waste heat. Only approximately 38 percent of the latent energy in fuel is converted into power and sold to you. To put it simply, you pay for the full 100 percent, but you can use only 38 percent.

It is precisely here that the CHP principle plays its trump card. In other words, the micro CHP boiler is a decentralised power station that generates heat and power exactly where it is needed – in your home. Almost 100 percent of the waste heat resulting from

It certainly pays if you generate your own power while you heat. The principle is simpler than you'd have thought.

the power generation process is utilised for DHW and central heating.

Simple yet extremely effective:the technical principleA Sterling engine inside the Vitotwin 300-W micro CHP boiler generates power. It operates with a gas burner. The generation of power produces temperatures of approx. 500 °C inside the Sterling engine, in other words enough waste heat – i.e. energy – to provide DHW and central heating, almost as a by-product. Energy that covers the domestic demand nearly all year round. A peak boiler starts on the rare occasions when additional heat is required. This takes the form of a gas condensing boiler that has simply been integrated into the appliance.

The micro CHP boiler saves money – and "earns its keep" as well Utilising waste heat from power generation can save up to 20 percent primary energy. And, since CO2 emissions are also drastically reduced, you are also making an important contribution to climate protection when you choose a micro CHP boiler. In return, local and regional governments reward you with subsidies. You will also have the energy tax levied on the gas used for power generation reimbursed [in Germany].

Generating your own power can have a significant impact on your finances. It is [in Germany] reimbursed at a level of €0.0511/kWh (as of 08/2011). If you’re using the power yourself, the costs involved represent only approx. 1/3 of the official electricity tariff. Any power you don’t need you simply sell to the power utility by exporting it to the grid. In Germany, this is remunerated according to the rate set quarterly by the EEX Leipzig (second quarter 2011: €0.05361/kWh). As you’ll see, the micro CHP boiler does not just save you money, it is also a form of investment.

Micro CHP boiler

Compact, convenient, powerful – the Vitotwin 300-W is a genuine alternative to conventional heating systems when modernising. All year round, the micro CHP boiler delivers cosy warmth to your home and is perfectly suited to covering the electricity base load.

All in one: Stirling engine and gas condensing boilerWhere others have to deploy two appliances, Viessmann offers you a single compact system that unites all components of a micro CHP boiler. The unit includes not only a Stirling engine, but also a gas condensing boiler that covers peak loads.

Power and heat for domestic homes – the Vitotwin 300-W is precisely tailored to the requirements of modernised detached and two-family houses.

The result speaks for itself: Combining fully developed technologies ensures the highest possible reliability. Stirling and condensing boiler are perfectly matched to each other. Even better, the Vitotwin 300-W is no larger than a wall mounted boiler.

Quietly powerful: The Stirling engineThe Stirling engine of the Vitotwin 300-W is hermetically sealed and runs very quietly. So there is no reason why it cannot be installed close to the living space.

Two pistons work inside the Stirling engine, the movement of which is converted into electrical power. The waste heat generated by this process is available for heating purposes. An overall efficiency [to DIN] of 96 percent (Hs gross cv) demonstrates the energy utilisation of the Stirling engine as highly effective.

The micro CHP boiler operates with exceptional economy where the annual gas consumption is at least 20,000 kWh and the power consumption lies above 3000 kWh per annum. This is exactly the demand of an average modernised detached or two-family house.

Why pay more?Quick installation and service The installation of the Vitotwin 300-W is as easy as that of a conventional wall mounted gas boiler. The Sterling engine and the peak load boiler are united in a single appliance. Consequently they can share connections and the flue system. The electrician only has to replace the current meter with a two-directional meter [where applicable]. The power generating meter is already integrated in the Vitotwin 300-W.

Servicing is even easier: The Stirling engine is completely maintenance-free, meaning that only conventional servicing of the gas condensing boiler and of the circular burner of the Stirling engine are required.

All heating systems are made up of various components – the same goes for micro CHP boilers. However, it is not enough that the individual components used are sound within themselves. Their optimum interaction is of equal importance. You can rely on that with Viessmann.

System technology

The Vitotwin 300-W by design:

All components are matched to

each other so ensuring the highest

efficiency of the overall system.

Simply more efficient by design

Viessmann offers a comprehensive range of heating technology, delivering you a complete system designed around the Vitotwin 300-W from a single source. As a result, you can be sure that all components are a perfect match.

Thanks to our comprehensive range we can offer you all system components from a single source. Perfectly matching, these components allow you to rely on the highest possible efficiency, the highest reliability and a long service life.

Page 9: Ppr-micro Chp Boiler

Bi-directional meter for calculating the grid feed-in rateThe best option is the consumption on site of the power generated by the Vitotwin 300-W. When the generated amount of electricity exceeds the domestic demand, excess power is simply exported to the grid. In order to be able to sell this electricity, the electrician will replace the existing electricity meter with a bi-directional meter [in Germany]. A calibrated electricity meter that meters the exported electricity is already part of the appliance.

Pass over control – to your heating contractorViessmann offers remote monitoring for the Vitotwin 300-W which enables your contractor to check your system. A reassuring feeling, as you can always rely on a trouble-free operation.

Vitocell 340-M combi cylinder Vitocom 100 remote monitoring

Perfectly designed for use with the Vitotwin 300-W Viessmann system solutions make it easy for you to utilise the energy from your micro CHP boiler to optimum effect, By way of an example, take a look at the Vitocell 340-M combi cylinder. Long runtimes mean that the Stirling engine generates heat continuously. The Vitocell 340-M stores the heat that you don't need at the time. This ensures long runtimes and the least amount of cycling for the Stirling engine – and you can enjoy maximum DHW convenience. With a cylinder capacity of 750 litres, the Vitocell 340-M meets the highest demands.

Strong inner values The internal indirect coil made from stainless steel enables the Vitocell 340-M to meet the highest hygiene standards. It is no coincidence that stainless steel is also used for its anti-bacterial properties in the processing industry, in kitchens and in hospitals. Like all other Viessmann DHW cylinders, the Vitocell 340-M features a high grade thermal insulation all round for the lowest heat losses.
