Website: [email protected] Email: [email protected] Page 3

STATEMENT OF ACCOUNT - ADDITIONAL COSTS

This year there have been some additional costs from previous years. It is important to me that parents understand the reason

for any increases in costs and to give as much notice as I can of foreseeable costs. In the last week of each term, I will outline all

foreseeable costs for the following term in the newsletter. The intention has been to keep costs the same as 2017. However, due

to rising costs and some additional programs being introduced by the school, parents have reported to me that costs are higher

costs than last year. The additional costs are:

Excursions – mainly due to rising supplier and bus costs

Languages – Mandarin and French costs have risen by $20 per year, from $60 per year in 2017 to $80 per year in 2018 (or

$20 per term). The language programs are in addition to funding supplied by the department. The $80 that parents are asked

to pay is only half of the cost of the language programs provided and the other half is paid by the school.

Addition of ‘Mathletics’ ($20 per year) and ‘Reading Eggs’ ($20 per year) programs

Band – band costs have risen from $400 to $600 per year due to a change in supplier to Directions in Music which offers

specialist instrumental instructors.

If these higher costs are of concern to you, please do not hesitate to contact me in confidence.

WRITING

Writing continues to be a focus across the whole school. This term we are using pictures as a writing stimulus. Our NAPLAN and

ICAS result point to the importance of teaching all children to write using words or vocabulary specific to the writing stimulus. For

example, before writing, teachers talk to the children before writing about vocabulary which may be used in this piece of writing.

For example, ‘globe’ instead of ‘round ball’, ‘exotic countries’ instead of ‘interesting places’, ‘peering thoughtfully’ instead of

‘looking’. http://www.pobble365.com/the-magic-globe

ICAS WRITING

Some students at Pagewood Public School have entered the University of New South Wales ICAS English tests. We are proud of all of our students but special mention must go to the following award winners: Credit

Year 2 Cody Harry Jasmine Chloe Eamon

These awards will be handed out at our assembly on Wednesday 19 September, at 2:30pm.

WELLBEING - LUNCHTIME ACTIVITIES

Some children like quiet spaces to spend their lunch, while others find the playground an overwhelming experience. There are

activities for every child during the lunch break every day except Friday. For Term 3, the following activities are on offer. These

activities will change next term.

Monday 1.25pm-1.50pm Drama Club, in Library with Ms Shiozawa & Ms Tang

Tuesday 1.00pm-1.25pm Chess Club, with Mrs Cianciolo in KC room

1.25pm-1.50pm Library, with Mrs Kerves

1.25pm-1.50pm Mindfulness Colouring with Mrs Lucas in Library

Wednesday 1.00pm-1.25pm Coding Club, in library with Mrs Reilly

Thursday 1.25pm-1.50pm Library, with Mrs Kerves

Friday 8.30am-9.15am Film Club, in library with Ms Grisanti and Ms Moffat

OUR STREET LIBRARY

As part of Book Week we launched our new Street Library. Any child can bring a book from home and swap it for a book in the

Street Library. You bring a book and swap it for another book to keep forever or swap again. It is really important that our library

books or home readers are not swapped, so please make sure it is a book you own.

PAGEWOOD’S PROBLEM SOLVER

If your child would like to participate in this week’s Pagewood’s Problem Solver, please have your child write their answer on a

piece of paper with their name and class, and hand this to Mr Tan by Friday. All solutions are welcome and parents are allowed to

help. The important thing is to have a go!

Last week’s task: What were the three best things you did for someone else’s wellbeing this week?

Well done to Shanze and Chacha. Both students wrote about helping others who were in need of a friendly word or helping

someone who had fallen over or talking to their parents during dinner about their day.

THIS WEEK’s TASK: Below is the first verse of Banjo Patterson’s famous poem ‘The Man From Snowy River’. How

many lines can you learn by heart?

THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER There was movement at the station, for the word had passed around That the colt from old Regret had got away, And had joined the wild bush horses — he was worth a thousand pound, So all the cracks had gathered to the fray. All the tried and noted riders from the stations near and far Had mustered at the homestead overnight, For the bushmen love hard riding where the wild bush horses are, And the stock-horse snuffs the battle with delight.

I do hope our students and their families have a relaxing and safe holiday break. School will resume on Monday 15 October.

Regards,

Victor Tan

Intention to apply for Year 7 entry to a selective high school in 2020

Dear Parent/Carer

Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient

classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping

them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials

at the appropriate level.

Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School

Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on

Thursday 14 March 2019.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2020, you need to apply on the

internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from mid-September 2018 at https://

education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7. The application website

opens at that link on 9 October 2018 and closes on 12 November 2018. You must apply before the closing date.

There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have

a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance after 9 October 2018.

You must submit only ONE application for each student.
