Visual style• The World looks like big board game, on where we controls our titular Heroes.• On the board we can see various buildings (eg. castles, towns and places of

recruitment) and also trees, and mountains, rivers, sea and other parts of landscape.

• In the one side of screen is the mini-map and icons of our heroes, captured towns, army we have and the menu and setting’s icon.

• The player can create or generate his own maps as well.

Characters• Playing characters are shared by

Heroes (who explores the map) and battle figures (who fights against enemy’s armies). At the start of the game we have (usually, depends of mission) a castle, which we can upgrade by buying/improving buildings, by one of each turn, and also recruit heroes, and new members to our armies.

There’s no NPC characters in this game.

Interface

• HoMM 1-4 have 2D, aerial perspective, whereas 5 and 6 also contain 3D perspective.

• Third-person perspective.

Gameplay

• Goals: In the most of campaigns and free scenarios, the player wins when eliminate villain’s heroes and capture his castles. Other additional goal is to find and possess ‘ultimate artifact’ (I-II), grail (III-IV) or Tear of Asha (V).

• Rules: The game is based on turns, in which the players have limited amount of movements.

• Challenges: • Difficulty: Usually the player is able to choose the scenario’s difficulty and

the time (or timeless) of a single turn.• Balance: Established order during he game.• Rewards: After each battle and from the map, heroes obtain experience

points and reach next levels, due to which they can gets new abilities (such as logistic, luck etc.) or improve already owned, and be able to learn more advanced spells.

Gameplay (cont.)

• Story: Every main title adventures take place in the same universe, different dynasties through different worlds and continents.

• Sounds: very climatic, give that atmosphere of fantasy, board games etc.

• Feedback: After winning a scenario, there’s a triumphal music, and the narrator tells what happens next. In contrast when player lose, is a sad melody and like in the other games, the scenario must be don from a beining again (if not saved before defeat). Similar with each single battle with an opponent, when you win, there’s a victorious song and the picture with proud hero on his horse, or a castle, depends on place.

• Game divided by turns (in each turn is a specific amount of movements)

• Capture castles and/or eliminate heroes from opposite team

they have enough time to invent their own useful tactic and strategy.

Genre – Turn based strategy

Game genre, where players take turns when playing. Game requires a strategy thinking and an ability to make a good tactic.

Other both similar and different sub-genre is the real-time strategy, where the players play simultaneously.
