The European Wool Group EWG

was founded in May 1997 in Brussels. The EWG main aims • improve the value of European produced wool, • encourage the international exchange of

experience and know-how between all those involved in the wool production chain

• represent members’ needs to the EU and other institutions

• seek financial aid to improve the sector. The members of EWG • Agenzia Lane d’Italia (Italy) • Asociación Nacional de Criadores de Ganado

Merino (Spain) • British Wool Marketing Board (United Kingdom) • European Association for Study, Innovation and

Research into Textiles (ATELIER) • Fagsenteret for Kjøtt (Norway) • Federaçao das Associações Portuguesas de

Ovinicultores (Portugal) • Finnish Sheep Breeders Association (Finland) • Gordet Oy (Finland) • Kerry Wool and Lamb Cooperative (Ireland) • Les Nouveaux Lainiers de France (France) • Odbytové družstvo Romney (Czech Republic) The Sales Cooperative Romney was founded in January 2000 in Námìš• nad Oslavou. Its aims are to: • support production and sale of the members'

wool, • improve wool and meat quality in order to

respond to market demands, • group the offer of the members' products, • provide collective sale of the members' products

in order to obtain better prices, • operate collective stocking and processing

facilities for the members, • provide counselling, • provide transport service, • provide marketing, • represent members interests to the institutions in

order to obtain subsidies and support, • set up common investment strategies for its

members. At present, the Romney Cooperative has 28 members, individual farmers and one association of sheep and goat breeders.

Since May 2004 the European Union has ten new member states. The Common Agriculture Policy is undergoing profound changes and concern for environmental questions and interest in renewable natural resources are increasing. How could this be an advantage for the wool sector? The conference will offer the opportunity of exchange of information and experience between East and West, between wool producers and wool processors and it will be a first occasion to draw up common plans for training, promotion and cooperation within the European wool sector.
