Practice teaching course on liquid biopsy25-27 May 2016 - Madrid, Spain
PRACTICE TEACHING COURSESCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME
1
OverviewPersonalized cancer medicine aims to tailor treatments for eachindividual patient at diagnosis and during treatment. To fully enablepersonalized cancer medicine, the availability of easily accessible andminimally invasive tools to determine and follow the molecularmakeup of a patient’s tumor longitudinally is becoming increasinglynecessary. Indeed, molecular characterization of tumors to guidetreatment decisions is currently performed on tumor tissue samplesacquired at the time of diagnosis. However, tumors are highlyheterogeneous and evolve over time, making clinical decisions basedon tumor tissue biopsies suboptimal. Conversely, a liquid biopsy, where the genetic makeup of the tumor can be evaluated through ablood test, might provide a representative portrait of cancer and canbe easily repeated over time. This practice course is aimed to providea substantive overview of the main approaches in the liquid biopsyfield and will offer the possibility to be trained in hands-on laboratorieson the latest liquid biopsy techniques.
Learning objectivesAfter attending this course participants will be able to: • Provide a background on the biology of cancer progression and
dissemination• Review non-invasive methods to track the molecular profile of
cancer• Elaborate clinical and research applications for liquid biopsy
Target audienceClinical oncologists and translational researchers pursuing the desireto increase their knowledge on clinical and biological aspects of liquidbiopsy and who are interested in the validation and application ofliquid biopsy as a biomarker for personalized cancer medicine.
