Polyurea Over the last 15 or so years a new technology has been steadily growing in recognition throughout various indus-tries. This technology is an advancement of polymer chemistry based on an earlier chemical family known as polyurethane. The newer technology, known as “polyu-rea”, takes the form of plural component elastomer systems and has been formu-lated to provide casting, coating and caulking products that exhibit superior characteristics. Plural component elasto-mer systems have been known for decades. In fact the reactions forming the basis of polymers were discovered about 1850. Actual polymers were formed as early as 1937 and during the 1950’s and 1960’s urethane development was one of the focal points of new discoveries. The use of urethanes as elastomer coatings came to signicance during the 70’s and has continued to command a large share of the coating and sealant market. Urethane technolo-gy generally utilizes a catalyst in the systems to promote proper curing. Typical problems encountered with catalyzing systems are moisture and temperature sensitivity. Additionally, catalysts may become a deteriorating element in certain systems. These problems often plague urethane systems. Polyurea does not use a catalytic process, therefore once the chemical reaction has occurred the resulting product is quite inert. However, the extremely reactive nature of polyurea components has formed a general barrier to its use.

Extremely rapid reactions present problems in proper mixing and applica-tion. In the early 80’s some of these problems began to be addressed using sophisticated plural component high-pressure equipment. These uses

RIM (reaction injection molding) and spray application. (The polyurea systems are in wide use in the automotive industry where bumpers, cowlings, side panels, dashboards and other parts are routinely made from polyurea). The polyurea systems are fast systems. They are two component, solvent free and 100% solid. Moisture during the applica-tion does not signicantly inuence the curing performance of the polymer. Likewise, temperature does not present a problem either. As mentioned before, the rapid reaction times presented a barrier to use of the systems for any type of casting, pouring or mobile manual applications. Thus, while the end polymer products exhibited much better performance characteristics than typical polyurethanes, the installation issues caused by the rapid reactions allowed for use of polyurea systems in only a narrow range of situations.

Starting in the mid-80’s Texaco Chemical Company began devoting signicant resources to the development of polyu-rea systems as a complimentary use for their patented raw material known as Jeamine. Signicant strides were made in developing spray formulations of polyurea with set times of 1.5 - 3.0 seconds. Development of industrial uses necessitated improvements in processing equipment. Gusmer Corporation, a leading provider of impingement processing equipment, worked closely with Texaco in producing innovative equipment for delivery of the polyurea systems

Every industry expectation is for geomet-ric growth in the use of polyurea as a coating and sealing elastomer.

Caulking and Sealing ProductsDuring the period from about 1990 to 1995 a handful of companies entered the polyurea formulation business. A variety of target markets were identied and several system manufacturers began eorts at producing slower versions of the polyurea systems with a focus on sealant and caulking products. The greatly improved performance of the polyurea systems provided the impetus for pushing forward with product development. Steady increases in the use of the polyurea joint lling and sealing products have been made over the last several years.

A general consensus has been building among knowledgeable designers of oor systems that the polyurea joint lling products exhibit the optimum character-istics for long-term performance under heavy use conditions. Several new vendors of polyurea have entered the market, some adding the technology to long standing product lines. Renements in the equipment for delivery of the systems have been made and a greater number of experienced contractors make specication of polyurea systems a viable alternative.

A detailed analysis of the polyurea technology unmistakably points in the direction of replacement of many urethane systems. The superior charac-teristics of the polyurea must inevitably be recognized. The higher costs of polyurea will present certain market barriers until evaluated on the basis of performance. The largest challenge in developing polyurea products for caulking purposes has been to maintain the performance characteristics while slowing the reaction times enough to allow for traditional installation. The rapid curing features are a signicant selling point, especially where facility shutdown is an issue. Obtaining pot life of up to 5 minutes is pushing the extremes of the slow down potential for these products if they are to maintain the polyurea characteristics and perfor-mance.

Page 7: Praetorium brochure

PRAETORIUMb u i l d t o p r o t e c t

Polyurea Coating ProductsThe initial uses of polyurea chemistry were in xed place impingement molding facilities. The technical advantages of the systems require high-pressure spray application. Only recently have the equipment designs necessary to mobilize the coating potential become commer-cially. At the end of 1995 the market had only a few mobile coating equipment packages capable of applying the polyurea systems. Delivery equipment units are somewhat expensive and require technical training to operate and maintain. Nonetheless, protective and specialty coatings based on polyurea represent signicant advantages over other coating systems.

The polyurea chemistry is quite resistant to a broad range of corrosives, and cured products exhibit excellent adhesion and abrasion qualities. Perhaps the most signicant advantage, certainly the most evident, is the incredibly fast cure time of the systems. Rarely can a protective coating be installed and used within the same 24-hour period. The extremely fast curing aspect of polyurea systems forces a close examination for any application which is constrained by time and temper-ature.

As we move into the 21st century the uses of polyurea systems continues to expand. The market has moved from negligible to perhaps $50M in annual sales of coating products. Use as water-proong and containment membranes is the leading current use but as the technology becomes more widely understood and the universe of technical-ly procient applicators increases a much broader industrial market is beginning to open. Longer life cycles for infrastructure demands that protective coatings be evaluated as viable alternatives for substrate replacement. The unique physical structure of polyurea mem-branes places this technology in the forefront for life cycle economic analysis. The compatibility of these coating systems with various substrate materials such as steel, concrete, wood and other synthesized materials further broadens the horizon of uses. Every industry expectation is for geometric growth in the use of polyurea as a coating and sealing elastomer.

WaterproofingThe 100 %pure Polyurea is a waterproof-ing membrane with high toughness and resistant against wear, that once applied in conditions of moisture oers excellent stability and durability.

The waterproong membrane Polyurea is immune to temperature changes between -40 ºC and +180ºC preserving its elastic properties without suering either cracks or softening.

The rapid reaction of the 100 % pure Polyurea , on having been applied, provides a stability in seconds and in 3 hours is transitable, guaranteeing the waterproong properties. This polyurea obtains optimum conditions after approximately 24 hours.

The versatility of Polyurea and its drying in 4 seconds, gives it the possibility of adapting to any surface, turning it into the ideal product to be applied on irregular areas with forms of any nature, even curved or squared.

The variety of colors for Polyurea is very wide, providing the product to the client already formulated in the desire color, thus avoiding having to apply color pigment on site.

With the application of Polyurea you don’t have to do any joints, seams or any other type of union since the nished surface is uniform, continuous and of only one piece, providing a very easy to clean surface.

The contact with fuels, fertilizers, animal excrement or urine neither degrades nor corrodes Polyurea .

The properties of Polyurea, allows it to adhere to any surface like cement, concrete, polyurethane, wood, metal and also, for its high resistance it can be transited and anti-skid applying a rough nish.

Polyurea is not considered noisy paving, and though not designed for this use, has good acoustic behavior.

In facilities with silos, deposits, swimming pools, tanks etc. where slurry is stored, Polyurea provides complete impermeabi-lization.

Pipe /Pipeline Coatings & LiningsPolyurea Coatings and linings are increas-ingly being used to protect steel pipes from corrosion. Polyurea has demonstrat-ed its ability to last longer than paint and maintenance services and costs are reduced. Polyurea is a great protective

coating system for pipes that are insulat-ed with polyurethane foam. We are now starting to see polyureas being used to line the inside of pipes for infrastructure rehabilitation work.

Bridge CoatingPolyurea's ability to outlast paint and ght o corrosion is a major reason these systems are being specied for bridge coating by State DOT's around the nation. The most common applications of polyurea coatings on bridges are over steel and concrete.

Proper surface preparation, high pressure equipment (2500 psi) and the use of compatible primers is required.

Joint Fill / CaulkPolyurea is being successfully used as a multi-purpose joint ll, caulking and sealant material. It can provide a exible, durable, weather-tight and trac resist-ant seal for all types of building joints, such as expansion joints and control joints in masonry oors, perimeter joints, panels and doors, water reservoirs, etc. It has

excellent crack-bridging properties with high elongation and tensile strength. The fast cure time and insensitivity to mois-ture allows for a quicker installation with a wider application window. Proper surface preparation and substrate condition is always necessary.

Tank CoatingsPolyurea coatings protect steel tanks from corrosion, chemicals, and other natural weather and jobsite elements. With proper surface preparation, substrate condition, formulation choice, primers, and installation procedures, polyurea goes on fast and stays on long. Polyureas are great for extending the life

of older tanks and can oer limited structural characteristics as well. These systems can be applied during primary construction or in a retrot environment. With their fast cure times they are ideal for retrot since down time is signicantly minimized compared to some competing materials.

Tank LiningsPolyurea linings are resistant to many chemicals and industrial liquids. With their fast application advantages and ability to adhere to properly prepared

substrates, polyureas are ideal for new storage tank primary lining and rehabili-tation projects.

MarineAbove the water line and below, polyurea can be very eective in protecting steel, aluminum, and berglass in a variety of water sport and commercial marine applications. From sound attenuation for

shing canoes, to sh hold liners, to hull protection and bilge liners, polyureas are used in many abrasion, chemical and corrosion resistant marine applications.

Roof CoatingPolyurea coatings make an excellent protective covering for polyurethane foam roofs. Polyurea can be formulated to meet specic performance requirements due the wide range of physical properties that can be formulated. Some systems have the "Cool Roof" ENERGY STAR® rating for color and reectivity. These

reective coatings can help reduce the amount energy consumption buildings use for heating and cooling. The fast cure time and insensitivity to moisture allows for a quicker installation with a wider application window. Proper surface preparation and substrate condition is always necessary.

Waste Water Treatment LiningsFast cure, chemical and abrasion resistant, concrete primary and secondary contain-ment linings. What more can you say

about Polyurea applications for the Wastewater Treatment industry?

Manhole & Sewer LiningsPolyurea manhole lining is a rapidly growing market due to polyurea’s ability to solve many current issues with ground-water inltration and installation speed. Many municipal and private water systems are in great need of lining and structural repair. With proper surface preparation and substrate conditions,

primers and Polyurea can be applied fast to return the cavity to service faster than most competitive systems. Polyurea’s ability to form a monolithic, durable liner protects the cavity from sediment and groundwater inltration into municipal wastewater systems.

Truck Bed LinersPolyurea truck bed liners form durable, water and air-tight, permanent liners for the exterior of pick up trucks, dump trucks and steel containers. These durable, easy to clean and abrasion resistant liners protect utility trucks from their harsh duty environments. They also protect against rust and corrosion from damaging trucks

and containers. Polyurea liners can also be applied in varied thickness to meet any specic application demand. Sprayed on truck bed liners are available in many colors and can be wrapped over the top edge of the truck bed to provide added protection from impact and abrasion.

Theme Park & Decorative DesignTheme Parks often use polyurea as a protective coating over foam, EPS and other structures to create ornamental

building fascia, themed characters, articial rocks, pools and environments.

Flooring and Parking DecksPolyurea ooring systems are most popular for their rapid turnaround installation capabilities. Other benets are available with polyurea ooring systems as well. Polyureas are very durable and great for use in areas of high trac. They are used in clean/dirty rooms

as a water proong and protective coating from daily pressure cleaning operations. Polyurea can be formulated to be exible and resilient allowing the ooring system to protect objects that may fall upon them.

Aquarium LiningAquariums have also found benets with polyurea. The ability to form to properly prepared custom shaped walls and themed ornaments make this system

desirable. A spray applied, water resistant liner, available in a variety of colors with rapid return to service installation is why facility owners are turning to polyurea.

Landscape & Water ContainmentLandscape designers and contractors have found similar benets with polyu-rea. Polyurea is often used to contain water for ponds and pool decorations to form a primary containment liner. Use of

geotex tile material is common when applying polyurea over dirt. Proper surface condition is vital when applying over concrete and most other substrates.

Architectural DesignPolyurea has much the same uses in architectural design as it does in theme park applications. Polyurea is used as a protective coating over foam, EPS and other structures to create ornamental

building fascia, themed characters, articial rocks, pools and environments. There are many uses for movie set and theater stage design as well.
