ESTARL Worship ServiceThe 100th Session of the Grand Chapter of Saskatchewan began on Thursday afternoon, Apr. 28, with the ESTARL Worship Service. Worthy Grand Matron Idella Barr welcomed all members and shared a piece of ESTARL history. The first ESTARL program was established in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1952. The first ESTARL Awards in Saskatchewan were in 1959. From 1957 to 1961, ESTARL was a project of the Worthy Grand Matron. In 1961, it became the project of the Grand Chapter. From 1957 to 2003, the ESTARL Committee has recommended 729 awards amounting to $344,440. She introduced the ESTARL Committee: Lloyd Pethick PGP (#1) (away), Cathy Farrer PM (#89), Phyllis Byers PM (#4) and JoAnne Knobbe PM (#7).

Call to Worship followed by the anthem “You Are Mine” by the Centennial Singers & Company. Opening Prayer was given by the Grand Chaplain Marie Costain (#8) and the scripture readings were read by Worthy Grand Matron Psalm 119:105 and Matthew 5:16 and Worthy Grand Patron Psalm 23 and John 8:12. The message was given by The Rev. Canon Neil Haines, an ESTARL recipient. Hymns sung were “When Long Before Time” and “I Am the Light of the World” with Grand Organist Lorraine Sobchyshyn (#38). The Blessing “Go In Love” by the Centennial Singers and Co. ended the service. Collection for ESTARL - $1222.05.

Necrology / Memorial ServiceThe service began with Tributes given to our Past Grand Matron and Past Grand Patrons of Saskatchewan who passed to the Grand Chapter on High – Sister Mary Livesley (#31) (WGM 1992-1993) who passed away Oct. 15, 2015, was given by Carol Janzen PGM (#132) (Grand Treasurer in 1992-93). Unable to attend, it was read by Evelyn Reierson PM (#38) (Grand Martha in 1992-93); Brother John “Jack” Pinnow (#1) (WGP 2007-2008) who passed away on Aug. 6, 2015, was given by his Worthy Grand Matron Llynne Lambert (#8); Brother Allan Inglis (#7) (WGP 1989-1990) who passed away Aug.15, 2015, was given by Anne Bruce PGM (#84) (Grand Conductress in 1989-1990).

The Star Point Addendum “In the Light of Memory” was given -- Standing before the Altar, each Star Point lit a candle of their respective colours representing in memory of... ...the daughter (Grand Adah), ...the mother (Grand Electa), ...the widow (Grand Ruth), ...the sister (Grand Martha) ...the wife (Grand Esther). The Associate Grand Matron lit a candle of purple for the members of our Sister Jurisdictions and the Associate Grand Patron a candle of evergreen in memory of the Master Masons of our Order, the fathers, husbands, brothers and sons who gave us our Eastern Star. The lighted candles symbols of the wondrous light of immortality shed by the rays of the Star in the East.

May we like Adah, see the Light; Like Electa, wear our cross May we like Ruth, remain the widows friend; Till death our earthly life shall sever Like Esther, choose the crown most bright; And hope to find fraternal rest Like Martha, all in meekness bend; Forever and forever.

As the Grand Secretary read the names of members who passed to the Grand Chapter on High, the 2015 Worthy Matrons placed a flower for those members who passed away in their chapter. Afterwards, placing the scroll of the names of the forty-four members from 16 Chapters on the Open Bible of the Altar. Draping of the altar and prayer given by the Grand Chaplain ended the service.

Dedication of New Badges CeremonyGrand Marshal escorted the Grand Officers into the labyrinth forming a circle around the altar. A blessing to the new Grand Chapter Officer badges was given by Rev. Neil Haines. The Worthy Grand Matron and Patron each read a verse alternately as the Grand Officers step up to the altar to receive the new badge of their Office returning to their place in the circle. Afterwards the Centennial Singers Choir sang “Go In Love” bringing the Thursday session to a close.

Informal Opening SessionThe Thursday evening session began with a musical prelude by the Grand Organist Lorraine Sobchyshyn (#38) and the Centennial Singers & Company performing “Candle in the Window”. Call to Order and Welcome was given by Bev Otsuka PGM / Grand Lecturer (#4/#3) and Gerald Busch PGP (#31).

The Bible and Emblem Ceremony was narrated by Rod Stafford GGCCM/PGP (#15). He began with an excerpt from the 1931 Proceedings regarding the beginnings of a Grand Chapter in Saskatchewan. It was Brother W.C. Trick who became interested in the Order and it was his task to get others interested. He approached the Moose Jaw Masonic Lodge No. 3 for support. At first this was not forthcoming, but in time with Brother Trick and others and their persuasive influence on the Masonic members, they were promised their assistance. In August 1909 Mizpah Chapter No. 1 was organized and instituted. By 1916, nine chapters were instituted and under the jurisdiction of the General Grand Chapter. Past officers of Mizpah #1 felt it was time to organize a Grand Chapter and on May 16, 1916, approximately 50 delegates attended the sessions in the Oddfellows Temple in Saskatoon. George Pettigrew, MWGP was the instituting officer and Acting MWGM Emma Ocobock installed the officers.

This Grand Jurisdiction owes our inception to a Master Mason. Our founder, Rob Morris, states this “his ideas were chosen to more closely represent to the minds of the wives, mothers, daughters, widows and sisters of Master Masons.” Our Order is related to the dearest ties to the members of Masonic Fraternity. The “Heritage” of the Order and its teachings are intertwined in the principals of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.

Celebrate Our Heritage explained how the emblems of the Masonic Fraternity and the Order of the Eastern Star are intertwined. The Emblem Bearers are Past Grand Star Points and the Bible Bearer a Past Grand Chaplain and each was escorted to their stations by a Past Grand Master.

Adah - Janet Zondervan (#15) Grand Secretary Emeritus, Grand Esther 2004, escorted by Dennis Skuce PGP (#132), Grand Master 2012. The Sword and Veil united is an emblem of Fidelity and is representative of the Square - a symbol of morality and should be our rule and guide with all mankind.

Ruth - Beth Joseph PM (#2), Grand Ruth 1983, escorted by Don Finan (#2), Grand Master 2004. The Sheaf of golden wheat an emblem of Constancy and representative of the Compass - teaches friendship, morality and brotherly love to omit our desires and lead a life of physical as well as moral integrity.

Esther - Anne Bruce PGM (#84), Grand Esther 1986, escorted by Bill Fitzsimmons (#2), Grand Master 2005. Martha - Ruby Lee PGM (#92), Grand Martha 1987, escorted by Wilmer Pizzey (#2), Grand Master 2006. Broken Column an emblem of Hope and Immortality and is representative of the Level - indicating we are all from the same stock and partake of the same nature and share in the same hopes.

Address from the Right Worthy Associate Grand MatronMarianne Shenefelt PGM of WyomingSister Marianne began bringing greetings from Most Worthy Grand Matron Helen Westmoreland and Most Worthy Grand Patron Bob Penoyer along with best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable 100th year celebration. She thanked Saskatchewan’s General Grand Chapter Committee Members -- Donna Sanders (#89/#7) on Credentials and Rod Stafford (#15) on Registration for their willingness to serve General Grand Chapter.

It is a tremendous honor for her to be present to help celebrate Saskatchewan’s 100th Grand Chapter Session. She stated that Saskatchewan became a province in 1905 and in eleven years Sisters and Brothers of the Subordinate Chapters organized a Grand Chapter in 1916. “Saskatchewan Eastern Star is terrific and has been for 100 years! You can be very proud.”We are the caretakers of this longstanding presence of Eastern Star in this Province and our continued service and dedication pays tribute to those who have come before. She recognized the good charitable work we do re: Pediatric Cancer of the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency donations exceeding $39,000; the last Triennium $15,500 to ESTARL, over $44,500 to Grand Chapter charities and special projects of the WGMatrons and Patrons as well as to other projects for a total of nearly $65,000. “I would say you are a “small, but mighty” Jurisdiction!”She ended her message by thanking those who welcomed her at the airport and the continued hospitality and courtesies extended to her since arriving. She has definitely experienced the three “L’s” this year -- “Love, Laughter and Light”.

Address from the Right Worthy Associate Grand PatronHenry S. Martin PGP of Texas He began by stating that it was a distinct honour to be here and appreciated the opportunity to address the members at our 100th Grand Chapter Session. As one of the Elected Officers of GGC, he informed members that the Order is alive and well. We may not have the 1 million members we had twenty years ago (currently it is approximately 400,000 around the world) but two Jurisdictions are working to qualify for a Grand Chapter and it was only

3-4 years ago that a new Grand Chapter was constituted in Italy. So that is evidence that there is interest in the Order. He spoke of the challenges that the Order is facing. That we should look at these challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities and dedicate ourselves to using them to benefit this Order. Reminding us that the growth in our individual Chapters is our responsibility and that we must work on it. He made reference to Sister Idella and Brother Eric’s Aim that includes the words “promoting our good works within our communities” and “showing pride in our Order by our actions” -- words to describe a large part of the remedy that the Order of the Eastern Star needs today. In closing, he commended the Worthy Grand Matron and Patron for their vision and actions this year and thanked the Grand Chapter for all the courtesies and the great fellowship he and his wife have enjoyed.

Washington DC Tour - Fred Coventry PP (#84)Twelve members from Saskatchewan arrived in Washington DC on Oct. 27th.The first day, Oct. 28th, a tour of the International Temple also known as The Belmont Mansion -- the fifth largest private dwelling in the city. Upon entering the building, is the beautiful entry that is flanked by a huge marble stair case leading to the upper floors. Two of the rooms in the mansion there were ceilings which had been water damaged and stained beyond repair when the building sat empty for a time. An artist painted a beautiful fresco of the five Heroines of our Order in the centre of one room where the light fixture would have hung. They appear to float in a cloud around the middle of the room. The Belmont Mansion contains many art objects including a gold leaf covered baby grand piano in the Grand Salon. There were only three of these ever made. Also the first Signet done on parchment and a beautiful framed large piece of tatting done by Jack Smith PGP (#2).The second day a tour to the Scottish Rite Temple. The entry was huge and ornate, unlike the Belmont Mansion, houses an actual Lodge room that is used for special meetings and various board rooms. The Lodge room is huge and everything precise and symbolic. The alter not only held the Bible but four other Holy books. There were libraries in all of the small meeting rooms or conversation areas. In the more collectible type rooms, displays of Masonry regalia, gifts given to the Temple, Military regalia, books, keepsakes. The main library was full to the roof two stories high. There were display cases full of beautiful Jewels from every concordant body. After lunch, the group made a stop at the Lincoln Memorial.Beside the Lincoln Memorial, there is a memorial park with tributes to the Korean War Veterans, “the Wall” for the Vietnam Vets and a section of walls in honour of Harry Roosevelt. The Vietnam Veteran Memorial Wall lists the names of the missing and dead from the Vietnam War, but the Korean War Memorial wall is etched in marble like the other but the content is taken from photographs of the veterans -- living, missing and dead. Adjacent to that are statues of huge 9 ft. soldiers slogging and crawling on their bellies through a rice paddy. The tribute to Roosevelt covered all his years in public life. What is written on the wall is even in braille on each panel so that the blind may enjoy. The third day was a relaxing and free day to do whatever he/she wish to do. Some going to the White House Interpretive Centre, a few to the Arlington Cemetery to see the eternal Flame, visiting the National Museums -- Air and Space, Art and Science, one held the Declaration of Independence and a Copy of the Magna Carta as well as all the Inaugural Ball dresses of the First Ladies. After an enjoyable three-day visit at Washington DC, the group headed back to the airport on Oct. 31 to catch the plane to Pittsburgh for General Grand Chapter.

It was fifty years ago that Brother Tom was installed as Worthy Grand Patron with Isabel Welch as Worthy Grand Matron. Brother Tom is a 60 year member of the Order. Sister Rose stated that during those years he has willingly, faithfully and diligently served in three chapters many times as Worthy Patron and in other offices. He visits the sick and shut ins and his caring and sincere spirit is an asset enjoyed by all. He serves as reporter for the Past Grands Association keeping the members “in the know”. The Grand Chapter extended their congratulations, respect, honour and love by singing “For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow”.Brother Tom not expecting this appreciated the kind words and was only sorry that Sister Isabel was not here to share this honour. Over the years since joining Bowling Green Chapter #83 in 1956, then to Milestone #60 in 1973, and affiliated with Regina #7 in 2006 has learned many things and indebted to many people. He is grateful to the people who have gone on before and prepared him through the years to live according to the principles of our Order and because of them stands here today.

A Tribute to Alice McAuley (#132) 1990-91 – 25 Year Past Grand Matron given by Rose Whaley (#7) PGM (Associate Grand Conductress 1990-91). Sister Alice and Sister Rose go back almost 40 years when they both served as Worthy Matrons in their respective chapters. Prompted by her love of music and a life filled with music it only seemed fitting to develop a music theme for the year as Worthy Grand Matron -- “The Joy of Music” for the 75th year of Grand Chapter.During her term five Chapters surrendered their Charters and Dec. 31, 1990, there were 54 Chapters with a membership of 5,074. Spreading the joy was definitely on her ‘to do’ list and she did this by visiting shut-ins and the residents of the Eastern Star homes, visiting the Grand Chapters of Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia as well as representing the Grand Chapter of Saskatchewan by attending subordinate chapters in Weslaco, Texas, New York City and Georgetown, District of Columbia. During her year, a Capital Bus Trip where two coaches totaling 70 enthusiastic Star members attended. As a General Grand Chapter Committee Chairperson International Peace Garden Chapel (1994-1997) she was instrumental in having a new organ installed in the Peace Chapel located on the grounds of the International Peace Garden. Sister Rose congratulated her for the years of service to this Grand Chapter and to the Order which includes sharing her musical talent with the Grand Chapter of British Columbia and Yukon and in several subordinate chapters.Sister Marianne Woods PM (#7) sang “Hallelujah” accompanied by Marg Cobb PM (#7).Sister Alice spoke stating that she feels a great deal of sadness that she has lost contact with many of her Officers. Eleven of the 18 are deceased including her Worthy Grand Patron Harold Horn and his wife and Grand Esther Lucy. Since moving to Surrey, BC, 22 years ago she has been Worthy Matron in Langley and served as Grand Organist and Assistant Grand Organist twice and currently Organist for two chapters. She belonged to the era where the Worthy Grand Matron was not allowed to have the Red Book and the Past Grand Matrons were pretty mighty and carried all the knowledge. If you wanted information you went to a Past Grand Matron or to Grace Montague Grand Secretary who was really a source of information.

A Tribute to the Late Harold Horn 1990-91 – 25 Year Past Grand Patron given by Adrien Tatarinoff PP (#1) (Grand Organist 1999-91) Brother Harold was a true Brother. He served in all the steps of all the Orders of the York Rite as a Mason and in Star he and his wife Sister Lucy initiated together and served in Saskatoon #4. He was Warder, Sentinel and twice as Worthy Patron. He served for five years on the Home Fund and two years as a Grand Trustee. He enjoyed and appreciated his year as Worthy Grand Patron. He ended his tribute with this quote from Brother Harold “serving with Sister Alice has been a most memorable one for me. The courtesies and hospitalities extended at each and every one of the Chapters we have visited has been superb. I have been doubly honoured having Sister Lucy, Grand Esther, with me on practically all of our visits. It had been a joyous year serving as your Grand Patron.”Brother Harold passed away to the Grand Chapter on High on January 27, 2005 at the age of 94.

Notes of InterestService Dog Committee – Llynne Lambert PGM (#8) - Chairman

At the November 2015 Triennal Assembly held in Pittsburgh, the membership voted to establish Service Dogs as a permanent identifying charity. A charity that our Organization will be known as giving their support. The Grand Chapter of Saskatchewan chose the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. This Foundation has provided specially trained Dog Guides at no cost to people of all ages from coast to coast. It has made a huge impact on the lives of many Canadians with a medical or physical disability. The dogs are trained to help people who are blind or visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing, or have a medical or physical disability, including autism, epilepsy and Type 1 Diabetes with hypohyceimic unawareness. Each Dog Guide costs approximately $25,000 to raise, train and place. The Foundation does not receive any government funding and none of the costs involved with raising and training a dog is passed on to the qualified applicant. Money raised provides the training, vet care, transportation and accommodation for the recipient while in residence learning to partner with their dog and follow-up services during the life of the team.

The End of an Era – “The Meota Tea” was held on the fourth Saturday of July in the village of Meota hosted by Jack and Lyn Smith, Linda and Walter Ard and Stan and Yvonne Rogers all members of North Battleford #2. This began in 2000 where all members were invited to tea along with purchasing Sister Linda’s Lemon Butter, various jams, jellies and pickles and saskatoon pies as well as the opportunity to purchase Brother Jack’s tatting through a silent auction. The monies raised each year were donated to the Worthy Matrons’ Special Projects. In 2015 this tea was referred to as “The Last Cup” bringing a long standing tradition to an end.

A Project Made with Love – Another tradition that came to an end was the replicas of pins that were created by Jack Smith PGP (#2). It began in 1998, when Brother Jack and his wife Sister Lyn (who were members of Rosetown #64), created a 2-1/2 foot high replica of Worthy Grand Matron Joyce Smith’s millennium pin in honour of their official visit to Rosetown Chapter. The idea of replicating the pin came to Brother Jack after he had done one in 1984 for Worthy Grand Matron Una Henderson.Receiving favourable response from the Worthy Grand Matron and Patron and other members, he took on this project for each incoming Worthy Grand Matron as a labour of love and support for the Grand Chapter. Each year he asked each Associate Grand Matron for a project pin which he would take on his winter holiday to Arizona where he would spend his time planning and working on his newest creation. Replicas have been made from every type of material -- foam, netting, macramé, satin, ribbon, wood -- any kind of material needed to match the pin. After sixteen years (with the exception of 2005 as there was no pin), Brother Jack has decided to retire from this “Project Made With Love”.

(Information from the “Celebrating Our Centennial” book. Being it was part of our history, it should be a part of the GC History Book.)

Grand Chapter Choir – In the past, choirs were part of the Grand Chapter Sessions. It has been a number of years when there was a choir and Merle Sawatsky PM (#89/#4) came up with the idea to have a choir for the Centennial Session and with the assistance of Penny Pederson PM (#7) the “Centennial Singers and Company” was formed. Twenty-five members representing 14 Chapters shared their voice and musical talents throughout the Sessions with the Worthy Grands’ musical selections as well as other selections.

Drill Team – Marking the Centennial, was the performance of the Drill Team. Thirty-two members of 11 Chapters, performed at the Saturday Afternoon Session.

The “Prairie Light” pin and replicacreated by Jack Smith PGP (#2) ending a 16 year tradition.

“Treasures” of the PastIn the past, the Grand Chapter room has been decorated with the Worthy Grands’ emblems, watchwords, scriptures, etc. Marking our 100th, the committee decided to display items that represented the past 100 years of the Grand Chapter of Saskatchewan. Two of the items on display were two quilts that were made and presented to two Past Grand Matrons:The Clara Lyons Quilt – Made in 1981 by the members of the home chapter of the Worthy Grand Patron Albert Rusby Prince Albert #16. The names of the Grand Family were embroidered around the edge. In 1999, Sister Clara’s family gave the quilt to Sister Bessie Hammel PM (Grand Electa 1980-81) who gave it to Queen Alexandra Chapter where it hung in the lower hall of the old Masonic Hall. When the Chapter moved to the new hall in the fall of 2002 and no place to display the quilt, a raffle was held amongst the members of the Chapter and Jean Scarlett-Cooper PM (#84) became the “owner” of this quilt. Sister Clara passed to the Grand Chapter on High on Sept. 6, 2002, at the age of 79.The Emma Stevenson Quilt – This quilt was given to Sister Emma when she served as Worthy Grand Matron in 1942. There are 85 Stars on it made by each of her Worthy Matrons that year. On the back, the Union Jack is in one corner and the American flag is in another. It is in the possession of her home chapter of Lloydminster #76. Sister Emma passed to the Grand Chapter on High on May 26, 1995, at the age of 94.

Travelling Gavels – At the Official Visits, the 2015 Worthy Matrons had the honour of using the Worthy Grand Matron’s Gavel -- a gavel that was handcrafted by Sister Idella’s daughter Brenna when she took Grade 9 Industrial Arts. She used this gavel during her term as Bethel Honoured Queen of Bethel #6, North Battleford and later as Grand Bethel Honoured Queen for Saskatchewan. She graciously lent her gavel to her mother for her term as Worthy Grand Matron. At three of the Sessions at Grand Chapter, Sister Idella used three of the four “Travelling Gavels”. The Grand Trustees were asked to do an inventory of the Eastern Star locker located in the Masonic Temple in Regina. When in Regina, Grand Trustee Donna Sanders GGCCM (#89/#7) showed Sister Idella some of the treasures they had found. The most impressive and beautiful were the three “Travelling Star and Gavel” cases. Three beautiful handcrafted wooden boxes to hold a gavel. Each box protected by a material “tote” beautifully sewn out of a soft, brown material. Inside, each box was a beautiful gavel each made with wood locally grown. Not all the cases had the written instructions but some had the book with the signatures of the members who attended the meetings, some didn’t (which was also on display at the Session). With permission of the Grand Trustees, Sister Idella decided to use these gavels each for a different session as they are a part of our history and our heritage -- and what better occasion then at the Centennial Session.
