The Five Discourses Matthew structures his Gospel to match the five books of the Torah! Jesus, as Teacher, has five major sets of teachings for his disciples! Takes sayings of Jesus from Luke puts in other places, and rearranges them in order to fit his literary needs.
One: The Sermon on the Mount (5-7)
Two: The Missionary Discourse (10)
Three: Kingdom of God Discourse (13)
Four: Discourse on the Church and Community (18) Five: Eschatological (End Times) Discourse (24)
One: The Sermon on the Mount (5-7) Includes the Beatitudes and the Lord’s Prayer
Two: The Missionary Discourse (10)
Instructions to First Century Christians (Ex: how to travel from city to city, how to spread God’s word and compassion)
Three: Kingdom of God Discourse (13)
1st half - outside when Jesus leaves a house and sits near a Lake to address multitudes of people (parables = The Sower, The Mustard Seed, The Leaven, etc.)
2nd half –inside house and addresses disciples (parables = The Hidden Treasure, The Pearl, Drawing the Net, etc.)
Four: Discourse on the Church and Community (18)
Given in anticipation of a future community of followers, and the role of people in leading it. Jesus’ stresses the importance of humility and unity in our communities. (parables = The Lost Sheep, The Unforgiving Servant)
Five: Eschatological (End Times) Discourse (24)
Mostly about the expected conduct of the followers of Jesus
